Marathon PR: 4:17 at Portland Marathon, Oct. 2007

10K PR 52:58 2010

Have run 22 marathons to date.

No injuries, ever.   :)

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for Boston (4:05 for my age/gender) - or, perhaps, to use my desire for a BQ as a way to get in the hated speed work so I don't just get slower and slower over the years.  This goal is "under (re)construction" right now, until I figure out whether it is truly what I want. :) 


Long-Term Running Goals:

To continue learning about myself and about running, and to enjoy being a fit, happy runner for life.   To always know why I am running and the best way to get the most (both mentally and physically) out of my runs.  To keep a sense of humor and remain optimistic about myself as a runner.  To enjoy running more and more with every passing year. 

Personal:

Baby boomer generation.  Jogged a little in my 20's and 30's.  Started running seriously in 2002.  Low-carb runner since January 2010. 

I love long runs and cold, cloudy weather.  I don't believe in "junk miles."  I am an optimist.  I adore dark chocolate, fog, my family, and knitting -- not necessarily in that order.

55F , clouds moving in.  Easy run.

This weather will be great for the 10K on Saturday! Even the sun-worshippers (I will not mention names) have to admit that 85F w/ 80% humidity does not a happy race make. 

A very enjoyable jaunt through the neighborhood.  I went down to the Crestview area for the first time in a long while, where the Snoqualmie TPC is setting up white tents for the upcoming Boeing Classic.  

The weather has totally energized me and I am eager to get going with my day.

I was thinking about you this morning -- and your race -- I am very glad it looks like fairer weather for you!! So how many 10Ks have you done? (I am asking because I am sure a PR is in the works!).

Allie - "Hence Utah..." That phrase is just cracking me up for some reason. I picture it on a license plate frame.

Bonnie - Four. My 10K history: 1:04:50 in Sept 03, 1:03 in Jan 04, 56:59 in Aug 04, 55:36 in Aug 08. Pretty pathetic isn't it? It's not a distance I am drawn to, obviously. Any tips for race strategy?

Hi Sno! My strategy is the same for every race ... run the first 1/3 really easy (for a 10K this means that you are actually breathing hard, but comfortable -- think, "can I run this pace for 50 mins?", the second 1/3 you are starting to feel tired and have to concentrate on pace , think to yourself, "can I run this pace for 25 more minutes?", the last 1/3 you have to really focus on form, relaxing, and getting through the mental part of racing (not letting your head get in the way of what you body can do) ... I usually focus on picking people off here -- find someone ahead of you and reel them in (slowly) ...

Jack Daniels says, "Run the first part with your head, the middle part with your personality, and the last part with your heart". or something like that. With 10Ks there are a lot of people who "fall asleep mentally" in miles 3-4, and some of them start unintentionally slowing down, you can really make a big difference by concentrating on running in this part of the race -- just save something for the last mile (to pick people off).

You will do great!!! I bet you PR.
