Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for Boston (4:05 for my age/gender) - or, perhaps, to use my desire for a BQ as a way to get in the hated speed work so I don't just get slower and slower over the years.  This goal is "under (re)construction" right now, until I figure out whether it is truly what I want. :)

Long-Term Running Goals:

To continue learning about myself and about running, and to enjoy being a fit, happy runner for life.   To always know why I am running and the best way to get the most (both mentally and physically) out of my runs.  To keep a sense of humor and remain optimistic about myself as a runner.  To enjoy running more and more with every passing year.

Personal:

Baby boomer generation.  Jogged a little in my 20's and 30's.  Started running seriously in 2002.  Low-carb runner since January 2010.

I love long runs and cold, cloudy weather.  I don't believe in "junk miles."  I am an optimist.  I adore dark chocolate, fog, my family, and knitting -- not necessarily in that order.

Your weather tracking/clothing report (in comments on October 25th) have inspired me to do the same (weather tracking) as well as track the gear required in the hopes that I'll make it further through the winter before heading to the treadmill. Thanks for the inspiration. Also, thanks to you, I know that it's because I am an INTJ that I had to figure out an easy way to get a ° after the F to properly write 31°F today...

Oh yeah, nice run!

LOL!

After my first winter in Snoqualmie, going on the TM every other day, I swore I would buy whatever I had to buy to stay outdoors. Doing ok so far! (year 5)

5 years is commendable! What do you do to keep the wind out? I've just used tech Ts so far, but I'm sure that they won't cut it below 25°F, and I know we're headed below 0°F...

Way to go sno! I could not convince myself to get out in that mess today. Maybe after work...

Sno-do you have a jacket that has a fleece lining but keeps the wind out? I"m looking for a new jacket. The one I have works great but has no real lining. And sometimes I want to wear a short sleeve shirt underneath. But can't b/c my current jacket is NOT warm. Just keeps me dry and wind free. Recommendations?

From Snoqualmie on Mon, Nov 01, 2010 at 16:43:06 from 24.18.192.33

Jason - We don't get quite as cold here as you do. The lowest I've run in is 9F. Whatever shell you can find, be sure to get some Smartwool under it. Pricey, but worth every penny. Polypropylene and whatever else they make long underwear out of these days cannot begin to compete with good, old fashioned WOOL. Smartwool is next-to-skin soft too. I have even added more wool layers over it in extreme cold. Wool rocks. Wool is light, warm and breathable. Wool makes life worthwhile.... OK, I admit I'm getting carried away. Can you tell I am a knitter?

RT & Nicole - you give me too much credit - I had completely dry streets for the first 4 miles. I hope to earn those kudos this winter, but I don't think I did today! And don't forget, I actually prefer this to sunny/warm. I want my Bravery Medal in August! lol

April - The jacket you describe (fleece lining) sounds heavy to me. I don't have the kind of cold you get, but I recommend layers, Smartwool (top) under whatever other tops you layer, and a good, light jacket....

I have two that I use a lot: 1) Asics Storm Shelter (http://www.amazon.com/ASICS-Womens-Shelter-Running-Jacket/dp/B002DMKG1G) a bit lighter than jacket #2 but not as waterproof, definitely quieter. 2) A cycling jacket with super long sleeves (keeps hands dry). Cyclists have a much worse wind chill and water penetration issue than we have, so their gear is pretty good. But it's a bit heavy, so always try it on and check for that. I think the brand I have is Fox.

I am really loving my Sealskinz socks! http://www.rei.com/product/620085 Didn't need them today, but I think I might tomorrow. Can't wait to see how long a run I can do in them.

way to get out there in the stormy weather. like jason, i am also trying to avoid the TM as long as possible. hopefully all winter. so thanks for all the tips!

Sno--really? that sounds heavy? I guess I keep thinking of my fleece lined nike pants (they are not wind proof) They are awesome though. I guess I was looking for a jacket that is in between super cold and fall weather. The jacket I have now I just wear a breath thermo and maybe one more layer (like smart woool) and i'm usually too hot. I was looking for something where I could wear a tshirt under it. The jacket I have now sticks to me when I sweat so I only like to wear it when i have long sleeves on.

I like the link you provided. I will look for it elsewhere (they only have XS and XL avaiable on amazon)

thanks for the comment. I enjoyed the Folsom Half. The American River is picturesque. Running races helps. Need to do more.

Have a great day.

April - I guess there are a lot of different weights for fleece, so I may have the wrong idea here. But now I'm confused. Are you trying to stay warm or dry? Because if you want "dry" without sticky-hot, I think you should pair a super thin tech shirt with a nylon shell, whatever you can find that is the most waterproof. A t-shirt will definitely leave your skin sticking to a nylon shell, but adding fleece or even a thin lining is going to add a lot of heat. Honestly, I'v never found a satisfactory combination for wet weather above 55F. Oddly enough, where I live it really doesn't rain much in the few warm months we get. Someday I'll put together a chart with all my outfits, which clothes for various temps, wind, etc.
