Marathon PR: 4:17 at Portland Marathon, Oct. 2007

Have run 22 marathons to date.

No injuries, ever.   :)

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for Boston (4:05 for my age/gender) - or, perhaps, to use my desire for a BQ as a way to get in the hated speed work so I don't just get slower and slower over the years.  This goal is "under (re)construction" right now, until I figure out whether it is truly what I want. :) 


Long-Term Running Goals:

To continue learning about myself and about running, and to enjoy being a fit, happy runner for life.   To always know why I am running and the best way to get the most (both mentally and physically) out of my runs.  To keep a sense of humor and remain optimistic about myself as a runner.  To enjoy running more and more with every passing year. 

Personal:

Baby boomer generation.  Jogged a little in my 20's and 30's.  Started running seriously in 2002.  Low-carb runner since January 2010. 

I love long runs and cold, cloudy weather.  I don't believe in "junk miles."  I am an optimist.  I adore dark chocolate, fog, my family, and knitting -- not necessarily in that order.

48F; sunny, with clouds starting to move in; very windy (20 mph, gusts to 33), felt mostly in open spaces.  Recovery run. 

I'm always glad when I finish a recovery run; they certainly help loosen everything up.  

If you read my post from yesterday, you know that we got a pull up bar, and that I cannot do even one pull-up.  But I can do something like a pull-stayinonespot.  One must start somewhere.  Well, I just have to say, today I am sore in a spot that has never, ever been sore in my whole life that I can recall.  A latissimus dorsi is born?

Don't feel too bad. It's pretty common for people that have never tried a pull-up to not be able to do one at first. Like anything else, it comes with practice.

It might help to start with some "negatives" and "assisted" pull-ups. For negatives, get your chin over the bar (use a chair or something that is just close enough to help) and slowly lower yourself down. For assisted, you're doing a pull-up from a seated position. Keep your legs out straight in front of you while seated, keep your feet on the floor while pulling yourself up (knees can bend slightly). With both these, you're training your body to get to where it can handle lifting your full weight. Just a couple of thoughts.

This is interesting because I can't do a single pull up either. I've tried negative pull ups, but never heard of assisted pull ups. I think I'll try them. Thanks!

PS: Do you know if "pull ups" are easier than "chin ups"? And if there are any differences in benefit between the two?

I can't do a pull-up either. A couple of summers ago I had the notion that I could water-ski like I had when I was a teenager. That was a rude awakening. I couldn't pull myself up. I'm guessing that's related to the can't do a pull-up issue.
