Have run 22 marathons to date.

No injuries, ever.   :)

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for Boston (4:05 for my age/gender) - or, perhaps, to use my desire for a BQ as a way to get in the hated speed work so I don't just get slower and slower over the years.  This goal is "under (re)construction" right now, until I figure out whether it is truly what I want. :)

Long-Term Running Goals:

To continue learning about myself and about running, and to enjoy being a fit, happy runner for life.   To always know why I am running and the best way to get the most (both mentally and physically) out of my runs.  To keep a sense of humor and remain optimistic about myself as a runner.  To enjoy running more and more with every passing year.

Personal:

Baby boomer generation.  Jogged a little in my 20's and 30's.  Started running seriously in 2002.  Low-carb runner since January 2010.

I love long runs and cold, cloudy weather.  I don't believe in "junk miles."  I am an optimist.  I adore dark chocolate, fog, my family, and knitting -- not necessarily in that order.

"As every runner knows, running is about more than just putting one foot in front of the other; it is about our lifestyle and who we are."  -- Joan Benoit Samuelson

42F, raining, wind ~10 mph.  Easy run w/ moderate increase in pace last 2 miles before c.d.  20 min. strength.

Very nice run.  You really cannot let rain get to you up here.  I am so glad I have found a combination of clothing and gear that keeps me comfortable.  One lesson I have learned is to put all the factors together: the temperature, the wind speed and the kind of rainfall will all have an influence on what I wear, as well as the type of run (ie speed work keeps you warmer).   Of course, in a long, hard downpour the fun-o-meter is going to fall dramatically no matter what I wear. Fortunately we haven't had much of that this winter. :)

I'm glad you've found the right combination of clothing and gear to let your fun-o-meter operate in the rain. I suppose necessity is the mother of invention.

Nice run today.

My fun-meter got uncalibrated by the nice weather. Now a little rain and wind seems unbearable.

You missed (or mist) yesterday's rain...hard stuff! When is the next race for you again?

From SnoFlake on Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 14:31:38 from 24.18.192.33

For me, the fun-o-meter plummets as the temperature rises as well as with increasing levels of precipitation. I do love rain, though. ;-)

Flake: Your Mom is tougher than any mailman...snow, sleet, freezing rain, dogs, bears, cougars...she runs right on through...She is Absolutely Amazing!!

The rain was kind of refreshing! As much as I complain about it, I think I like it sometimes. When is your marathon Sno?

Thanks, Jeff. Nice to hear my many sufferings have not gone unnoticed. ;)

Napa Valley Marathon, March 7.

From Bonnie on Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 21:02:53 from 64.119.33.134

ohhhh... you rock running in the rain - I don't mind running in the rain, but it so hard to get out into it when it is already pouring. I told you about the commercial with Joan Benoit didn't I? It is what I think about every time I have to run in the rain.

Napa is a GREAT race ... I debated about this one last year and someday I will run it (you know you can win your weight in wine??) wow.

Have a great night Sno.

Oh, I kept thinking it was Eugene, and that's way too close to Newport. Napa makes sense.

Bonnie- I don't know about the Joan Benoit commercial. I'll have to look for it on YouTube I guess. I might bring home wine, but no way will I win it. :)

From Bonnie on Fri, Feb 26, 2010 at 11:37:45 from 64.119.33.134

Sno - it was a really old commercial (I want to say maybe LA Olympics?) -- It showed a house and pouring rain. It was dark outside and inside the house (all you could hear was rain). And then a persons shadow opens the door and looks out into the rain ... they just stand there (in their Nike shoes of course) and then the door closes and the "shadow" turns from the door. They make it look like the person is going to go back to bed, but instead they go to a closet and pick out a Nike jacket. Then either Joan Benoit or Mary Slaney (I can't remember now) goes out into the rain for their run. The caption was, something "train like a champion" or something like that. It was really cool!

Another marathon? Already? You're amazing, and I'm not just saying that...I'm writing it.

But it's been months and months!
