Have run 22 marathons to date.

No injuries, ever.   :)

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for Boston (4:05 for my age/gender) - or, perhaps, to use my desire for a BQ as a way to get in the hated speed work so I don't just get slower and slower over the years.  This goal is "under (re)construction" right now, until I figure out whether it is truly what I want. :) 


Long-Term Running Goals:

To continue learning about myself and about running, and to enjoy being a fit, happy runner for life.   To always know why I am running and the best way to get the most (both mentally and physically) out of my runs.  To keep a sense of humor and remain optimistic about myself as a runner.  To enjoy running more and more with every passing year. 

Personal:

Baby boomer generation.  Jogged a little in my 20's and 30's.  Started running seriously in 2002.  Low-carb runner since January 2010. 

I love long runs and cold, cloudy weather.  I don't believe in "junk miles."  I am an optimist.  I adore dark chocolate, fog, my family, and knitting -- not necessarily in that order.

38F; partly cloudy w/ moonlight, wet streets but no precip. and little to no wind.  Hill repeats (VO2 & leg strength workout):   2.8 mi w.u.,  6 x 1 min. on ~10% hill w/ 2 min recov. between reps.  All reps .11 miles except last rep .12:  9:16, 9:03, 9:15, 9:05, 8:41, 8:22. 

A very satisfying workout.  The first rep felt horrible, as always. Penultimate and final reps were faster "on purpose," and I'm so pleased I could do it.  My legs were shaky and "dead" for about 15 minutes after the hill reps, but then I finished the run feeling great.

And now, for Sno's Online Therapy Session...  

My daughter (aka SnoFlake on the blog) was scheduled to be in a horse show this Saturday, and we've been preparing for it and looking forward to it for months.  Last night we got word that the show is being postponed due to rain. The new date is May 1, the day of my running club's inaugural Cinco De Mayo Mini-Marathon (half-mar).   We are both very upset. SnoFlake really wants me to go to her show, but she also would hate for me to miss my race, bless her heart.  

After sleeping on it, and letting it all rattle around in my brain while running this morning, here are my thoughts. I'm inclined to try to find a way to hush my inner two-year-old. (ie "I want what I want!")  I'll have many races in my future, but I have only one "daughter's first horse show." We don't even have a horse (her teacher lends her one of his), and I have no idea what role her hobby will play later in her life.  But she has worked so hard and improved so much.  And she wants me there.  I do not take for granted that my presence is important to my teenager; to me it is an honor.  And at how many marathon finish lines have she and Mr. Sno shivered, waiting, waiting, for me to come in?  

There is actually some chance the horse show could be delayed a second time for rain. It's the Pacific Northwest after all!  I was planning only a mini-taper, so I do not have to officially bail until I'm right up against the date.  And perhaps missing the half-m will be a blessing, in that I will not lose a week of taper and a week of recovery; that's two extra weeks of hard training that will go into my June marathon.   

"When in doubt, go to the rocker."  If I close my eyes I can put myself in the big Rocking Chair of the Future: I am 80 or 90 years old and I look back upon difficult moments of my life, and ask, "Did I do the right thing?"  When SnoFlake went to bed last night, she declared she would not go to the show if I had to miss my race or if I would not be there for the show.  That just won't do.  This is really, really important to her.  I think I need to dry these tears and never let my girl see how badly I want to be selfish and have my own way.  I think the Rocker says, "horse show."  What do you think?

Great job on the hill repeats. By the way, I love the word "penultimate," almost as much as I love "antepenultimate". And I just discovered that "preantepenultimate" is a word.

As for the horse show/race decision, I think you've got to go to the horse show. Your next key race is the Newport marathon anyway, right? So skip the half, fun as it would be, and power through your marathon training rather than losing two weeks, as you said to tapering for and recovering from the half. That's my two cents.

What time is the horse show? Or what time will she be competing? If it isn't at the same time as your half, why not do both? If it is at the same time, then definitely the horse show.

This is coming from a young person's point of view - Although I would hate to take away from my mom's activity, I really would want her there and would be hurt if she didn't come.

Always err on the side of "doing it for the kids" as they may not say it, but they will always remember that "Mom thought I was more important than her race"... Good Call there Sno! You might just receive some good carma on this upcoming marathon from it. :-)

Nice hill repeats.

Ditch the horse show....that sport gets way too expensive in a very short period of time!!! Trust me, I'm practically a part-time geographical bachelor with the amount of time my wife spends at the barn with her horse!!! Started off with lessons, then a saddle, then a horse, then full time training, then a trailer, then a more athletic horse. We have a separate horse bank account just to make sure we don't run thru all the money paying for the horse stuff!

Okay, now seriously, you already know what to do and don't really need our, ahem, *wisdom*. Go run the new Bainbridge Island half the weekend before (www.bainbridgeislandrun.com) and enjoy the horse show.

Horse show for sure ... SnoFlake is a most supportive daughter and has gone to many races (and enjoyed them immensely). The horse show is her day to shine! Go getum SnoFlake!!

BTW ... you are a great Mom AND I love the rocking chair!

I need to get some recipes from you -- Dean is trying the Paleo diet (we have the book for athletes) and I don't know what to make for him for dinner, suggestions? You have my email. Thank you wise woman!

Oh, that's a tough one, especially since its her FIRST show. Having been to my own daughter's horse shows, I can assure you that they are absolutely precious. I think you'll be sorry if you miss it :).

Love reading all about the bloggers days and what is going on in their lives besides running... Everyone is always so suportive.

There is always races... but our kids are only kids once. I can't wait to hear about the show and the race :)
