Marathon PR: 4:17 at Portland Marathon, Oct. 2007

Have run 22 marathons to date.

No injuries, ever.   :)

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for Boston (4:05 for my age/gender) - or, perhaps, to use my desire for a BQ as a way to get in the hated speed work so I don't just get slower and slower over the years.  This goal is "under (re)construction" right now, until I figure out whether it is truly what I want. :)

Long-Term Running Goals:

To continue learning about myself and about running, and to enjoy being a fit, happy runner for life.   To always know why I am running and the best way to get the most (both mentally and physically) out of my runs.  To keep a sense of humor and remain optimistic about myself as a runner.  To enjoy running more and more with every passing year.

Personal:

Baby boomer generation.  Jogged a little in my 20's and 30's.  Started running seriously in 2002.  Low-carb runner since January 2010.

I love long runs and cold, cloudy weather.  I don't believe in "junk miles."  I am an optimist.  I adore dark chocolate, fog, my family, and knitting -- not necessarily in that order.

"As every runner knows, running is about more than just putting one foot in front of the other; it is about our lifestyle and who we are."  -- Joan Benoit Samuelson

51F, partly cloudy w/ stars. Wind 5-15 mph w/ gusts to 27.  Recovery run with some walking.  20 minutes strength & stretching.

Dead, sore legs, but a pleasant jog.

Every now and then I feel like I should wear my Nike Triax shoes, which are relatively unused.  An easy day seemed to justify a little extra cushioning this morning. (These are my last pair of "traditional" trainers; every other pair is a racing flat of some kind.)  Well, I think I've finally convinced myself that no day is a good day for having heavy, stiff sheaths of rubber on my feet.  Maybe I can use them in snow sometime.

Speaking of minimalist shoes... There is a lady who shows up at nearly all my races, from 5K to the marathon, and wins her age group, 65-69.  I called her the Beautiful Older Lady for a long time, until I learned her name.  She is very pretty. And very fast.  (In Saturday's half marathon she beat me by over 13 minutes.)  Anyhow, I said hello to her after the race and noticed she had the thinnest little shoes on.  When I admired them she said, "You know, they say you can't wear these in longer distances, but I've run marathons in them - and I'm not crippled yet!"  Not hardly, Speedy Beautiful Older Lady.

The shoes were some kind of Asics. They looked a little like spikeless cross country shoes.  The name of the shoe was across the back of the heel, but neither she nor I had our reading glasses along so neither could decipher it.  Blind Older Lady here.  She had friends to greet so we parted, but I'll be looking for that shoe.

We had a friend that sounds exactly like the BOL in Nashville ... it is nice you got to meet her, any chance you two could run together? It Sounds like the shoes are either the Gel-Piranha or Dirt-Diva Cross-Country shoes? I love the Dirt-Divas!

I hope we can all be Speedy Beautiful Older Ladies when we reach a certain age. It would be great if you could run with this woman sometimes.

At least it was fairly warm out this morning. Glad you are back and feeling OK.

I think that Piranha is it, Bonnie! She did mention that her shoe is only 4 oz. The Dirt-Diva looks good too. I'm going to have a order both and try them out on the TM. Send back what doesn't work. Finally, a reason to like my TM.

I'm sorry but you guys are so funny for suggesting that I try to run with her. "Hi there. I'm the stranger who has been stalking you at all your races and my 5K speed is your easy run. Would you like to run with me?" hehehe

I have done it before, and some people I have done that with are still good friends! Another shoe to check out is the Brooks Mach 11. I have a much older version of the brooks that I really like, but unfortunately they exacerbate my PF - but you have had luck with Brooks before so they might work for you.

Bonnie, I want to look into those shoes. Are they like the ST3? Meaning nice and light weight?

From Bonnie on Mon, Jan 18, 2010 at 15:47:03 from 128.196.228.134

Yes ... very lightweight - probably lighter than ST3s ... but they have little bumps on them, so they can be used as cross-country shoes. I have some ST3s too, actually the precursor to them (since they are pretty old now - probably 3-4 years), but they not only hurt my PF, but twice after 10K races my foot would cramp like crazy after. It wasn't fun, so I don't wear them anymore, these days I prefer Asics and Nike Frees.

Yes, I'm looking at the Mach 11's as well. It's like there is this whole secret world of minimal shoes out there. No way would a running shoe store ever let me have a peek. I've had to get into it all on my own, with help from people like you of course.

Hi Sno! Just got back to internet land and caught up on this blog. Read your race report, and I'm so proud of you for pushing like that at the end! That was a really good race; I loved getting to give you your medal.
