No injuries, ever.   :)

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for Boston (4:05 for my age/gender) - or, perhaps, to use my desire for a BQ as a way to get in the hated speed work so I don't just get slower and slower over the years.  This goal is "under (re)construction" right now, until I figure out whether it is truly what I want. :)

Long-Term Running Goals:

To continue learning about myself and about running, and to enjoy being a fit, happy runner for life.   To always know why I am running and the best way to get the most (both mentally and physically) out of my runs.  To keep a sense of humor and remain optimistic about myself as a runner.  To enjoy running more and more with every passing year.

Personal:

Baby boomer generation.  Jogged a little in my 20's and 30's.  Started running seriously in 2002.  Low-carb runner since January 2010.

I love long runs and cold, cloudy weather.  I don't believe in "junk miles."  I am an optimist.  I adore dark chocolate, fog, my family, and knitting -- not necessarily in that order.

"As every runner knows, running is about more than just putting one foot in front of the other; it is about our lifestyle and who we are."  -- Joan Benoit Samuelson

45F, dry for 3 miles, then raining w/ some wind.  Slow, medium-long run. (I had some extra time this morning.)  Legs feel kind of heavy today.

Yesterday, I was so disappointed to miss my run. But all the power was out in this neighborhood (windstorm), and even with a headlamp that is just too much darkness for me.

Back in 2007 we had a massive power outage throughout the Puget Sound region and my power was out for 5 days.  I remember trying to go for a run and feeling completely terrified the entire time, like I was running inside a tiny bubble of light surrounded by endless outer-space-darkness, with an occasional rustling of  leaves, or the eyes of deer reflecting back at me. [insert shudder] I get the creeps just thinking about it.

At least I had some extra time this morning to make up for the missed run a little.  Mr. Sno, poor dear, is very ill and is taking a rare day off from work so I didn't have to be on Mom Duty by 6:40 as usual.

Nice miles!! I hope Me. Snow gets feeling better soon.

I have trouble with the darkness sometimes. But other times I like it, weird.

Nice running today. Way to take advantage of the extra time. Stay healthy!

Any opinion about Emergen-C? Do/have you used it?

I'm sorry Mr. Sno is sick, but I'm glad you able to find a silver lining in that particular dark cloud.

I was thinking that I actually prefer running in the dark because then not as many people see how dorky I look. But I don't like running in the dark at night, just running in the dark mornings.

JD- I used to take emergenC but it has too much sugar for me these days. Vit D3 is the magic pill IMO. I'm talking about large doses, throughout the day. I have been under assault for 3 weeks and have done well. 4000-5000 iu per day for normal, 10000 iu for battle mode. It WORKS. But you also need to lay off sugar (inflammatory) and get sleep. That will be $200. -Dr Sno. ;)

Carolyn--I feel the same way about the dark. Morning dark is better than night dark. LOL

Sno--that does sound scary! There are some parts of my morning runs that are dark like that. Areas where there is no light just my little bubble of light. The rustling of racoons can be scary! But it is only for a block or so at a time so it isn't too big of a deal.

Funny, I blogged the same thing about heavy legs yesterday :) You made a good choice not running on Tuesday morning. I should have done the same because it didn't work out well for me.

Nice miles this week, especially with Tuesday off.

Thanks Doc! :-)

After thinking over what I wrote, JD, I have to confess that I believe there is a lot more to my good health than taking vitamin D and sleeping enough. I regret that I may have sounded flippant or shallow. In fact I do a ton of stuff now that I didn't do for most of my life. I used to get colds or flu that would last for *weeks*. I just cannot afford to be sick like that anymore; there is so much I want to do in life and I'm really feeling the years now. So I become almost obsessive about researching any possible health improvements I can make.

Mr. Sno was kind of sick over a week ago, and then last week they had massive layoffs at his company. He didn't get cut, but he had to fire a guy who has worked under him for 27 years. My mother used to always say, "you'll never get a cold unless your heart is broken." If there is a way of wording that for guys I think it would explain why he not only had a relapse of his cold but got even sicker. Now he has a fever and a violent cough. He's taking plenty of vitamin D, thanks to me barking him about it continuously. But the mind and the body *both* have to heal, you know?

I had that little cold a couple of weeks ago, but I was able to shake it pretty quickly. Still, I see now a connection between the cold and some stress I was under. (Read tomorrow's post for details - I'm going to tell about something I've been keeping to myself but which now I feel like sharing - stay tuned!)

Now you can bill *me* - for therapy. ;)

Yes, dark is dark! We live on a very unlighted street, and the park is even less lighted (not at all), so headlamps are really the only way.

Nice you were able to take advantage of hubby's illness in such a productive way for yourself! Best wishes for his health.

Thanks Sno - I think stress plays a big part in a persons well being/health, as well as diet, exercise, and a multitude of others things. The reason I started running again 2 or 3 years ago is because I was getting sick all the time. I've never been one to get sick often so I know something wasn't right. Regular exercise has made a huge difference, along with all the other healthy habits I've picked up. I don't remember the last time I got sick, besides a couple of short term skirmishes that felt like something was coming but then went away after a day or two.

It seems you've mentioned something before, having to do with this time of year, that is a stress related. I look forward to hearing about it.
