Run happy and healthy all the days of my life. Be an example and inspiration to my family.

Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Ran w/ W & C on the canal trail.  Wore Mizuno Ascend...no new hot spots, yeah!  Another beautiful day!  Saw a big fat hawk soaring overhead and some ducks along the canal!

Questions:  what do you do when you get a hot spot or blister during a race/long run?  I need to prepare for that on Sat's GV50.

I have only got them during a marathon. I just ignored it knowing the end would come soon. Sorry not much help!

Crockett is the expert on that, probably some of the other ultra runners as well.

From RAD on Wed, Oct 20, 2010 at 13:32:12 from 67.172.229.125

yeah, I'd ask Crockett. I'm the same as Kathie...just keep going, it'll be over soon.

Glad you are out enjoying these beautiful days!!!

I get them all the time and I just keep running. They eventually pop while you are running and the pain goes away. BUT if it is bad, i say stop at an aide station, pop it, bandage it, and then keep going!

Let's see who can get more blisters Saturday, k?????

My advice is try and change shoes before they happen!

Can't wait to see you!

Perhaps you could carry some dry socks in a zip lock -- but what do I know, I run on treadmills.

From LuzyLew on Wed, Oct 20, 2010 at 19:19:22 from 208.187.197.42

have you ever pre-cut pieces of mole skin? You would have to take off your shoes to get it stuck on...or just bring other shoes to change half way through.

From JulieC on Thu, Oct 21, 2010 at 15:20:16 from 70.56.108.42

bring a change of socks AND more importantly run on BODY GLIDE in those places and EVEN in places you don't think it will happen. Reapply every time you can. Do you get to bring drop bags? BTW VASELINE DOES NOT WORK.

From JulieC on Thu, Oct 21, 2010 at 15:23:31 from 70.56.108.42

PS I DIDN'T get a single blister at the SQUAW PEAK 50 miler-- not even a lost toe nail and we ran thru river beds, mud and snow. CHANGE your socks (dry your feet before putting on new ones--napkins at the aid station or a dry part of your shirt). Funny thing I would change my shocks and two miles later I would have to cross water. So much for dry feet. OH I almost forgot BUY some SMART WOOL socks at Runner's Corner!!! WAY SMART!!

Depends if I'm racing for position or not. If racing, I grin and bear it unless it is really slowing me down. In Pony Express 100 I stopped once for feet care.

If I do stop, first choice for small problems is: Clean the foot, get the grit out, lance the blister (safety pin on bib), apply some bag balm. More severe choice, I tape the area with elastikon tape. The area has to be clean (rinsed) or the tape won't stick well. I don't use duct tape. That doesn't breath and will eventually move around causing other blisters.

Gee- what sounds more fun, the long race or the nasty blisters? Good luck with that. Take care, have fun and listen to your body. Can't wait to hear all about it.
