Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Smooth saved by Maynard at Ogden

First of all, I want to express my deepest gratitude to Maynard! :D He stayed with me the entire race and saved me from collapsing and DNF. :D He carried me by the arm for at least .75 mile on Grant Street. I was dead weight to him. He refused to leave me! Is that selfless love and kindness or what?!!!! :D :D :D When I paused to grab drink at station mile 24, I almost collapsed. He was so smart and astute; told me at the next aid station he would grab fluids for me so I wouldn't succumb to charlie-horse. He did that and watched over me to the end even into the med tent. Maynard, I owe you big time!!! You saved my life!!! What a special special friend/brother you are!!! I will never never forget your kindness!!! :D :D :D

Noisy hotel neighbors kept waking me through the night. Finally got up before the alarm at 3:55 am. At 4:30 am, Huans32 called and said everyone's waiting for me in the lobby.  Had Larry gave me a quick blessing before heading down to meet up with Huans32, Kathie, Maynard, Charlie and Kathie's friends. We were in good spirit riding the bus up together. No cell service at the staging area so couldn't connect with the other Forumites/FRBs but did see Andy at the potty line! :D Kathie had an air mattress for us to sit on! :D :D :D

Huans32, Kathie, Maynard and I lined up at the start towards the back of the 8mm pace flag. Kathie kept me warm and cozy in her blanket as the temp was cold which was a good sign. Didn't hear any gun or count down and we were off.  Huans32 and Kathie started out a bit faster and dropped us within the first 0.25 mile. Maynard and I had a great time running under a beautiful blue sunny sky. We soon joined Marcie Wood, a 27 y.o. whom I met at DNews last year (that was her first marathon). Marcie wanted to run 3:50ish. I knew Maynard wanted to run sub-4 at the least. I had no particular goal other than to finish upright and "pretty" . A BQ (4:15) would be icing on the cake. :D We were running in the high 8 mm paces which felt very comfortable. We read signs along the way that told story of a girl, very sweet. :) We passed and visited with Mr. Purple Swimming Suits. We thanked the guy providing a loud speaker blasting "Here Comes the Sun!" The miles just flew by feeling awesome. We crossed the half at 1:57:xx. PERFECT!!! Maynard took a pit-stop at the half soon caught back up before mile 15.

After crossing the dam, I passed a gal who was in my AG. We chatted a bit. In years past I feared the downhill canyon miles. This year it helped to have Maynard running alongside. I concentrated on proper form and the quads were happy. :D We were maintaining an easy controlled pace. I would have missed Allie's sign if Maynard hadn't pointed it out to me: a full florescence green poster with GO, SMOOTH GO!  She was there (mile 20ish) cheering her heart out! :D That gave me such a boost! THANKS Allie! :D :D :D

After the blazing downhill miles we entered the treacherous parkway trail. We passed a ton of people, out of necessity, b/c if I slowed, charlie horse would seize me. I always cramp up bad on this trail. The winding, rolling and congested trail made it difficult to fend off charlie. :? I credited my survival on this trail to Maynard's presence. :D Our pace wasn't too bad at 9:02, 9:07. Then trouble hit at mile 25 and my breathing became labored while fighting off painful cramps my pace slowed to 9:40. :( When we got onto Grant Street. I feared that I would succumb to charlie horse. I thought we were on pace for sub-4 until I saw the sign "1/2 mile to go". You've got to be kidding me!!! :x My Garmin registered 26.23 and my legs were done. :( Maynard let me grab his arm. He held onto my left arm and soon another fellow (in so much pain that I never learned his name) grabbed my right arm. They literally drag me on a painful ugly jog to the finish. I'm sure I was dead weight to these two heroes. As soon as we crossed the finish, the medics loaded me onto a wheel chair and whisked me to the med tent where Maynard stayed with me 'till I asked him to go look for my hubby.

The convulsing painful charlie horse on both my lower legs lasted for about 10 min. A nice Japanese sport medicine student, Tomoko, worked on my legs while another girl, Brooke, brought me fluids. After hubby got in the med tent, (he later commented that he knew the med-tent routine well   ) I stood with his help and walked gingerly out. Saw JulieC, Canyon, Mr. Canyon, Crockett, RivertonPaul, Lowell, Teena, Darrin, and others. We cheered Rob Brough in his first marathon. I am so proud of all my running friends. I feel so very very blessed to be associated with you. You are truly the GREATEST and MOST compassionate people! :D :D :D

We had to check out of the hotel by noon so I didn't get to clean up. THANKS Kathie for picking up my drop bag and waited for me at the hotel lobby. :D On the way out, we saw DonGardinero and his family in the hotel parking lot. THANKS for coming to cheer us. :D :D :D

My official time is 4:01:34, again thanks to Maynard! :D According to my Garmin I ran 26.73 miles...not doing a good job at tangents...didn't help w/having to stay on the right side of the road. Average pace was 9:02. The slowest split was the last 0.73 mile @ 10:25. The fastest split was mile 23 @ 6:16 which I'm sure is not correct. Maynard commented at the time that we were running in the low 7's. Anyhow, that 6:16 looks good on the Garmin. So that's how Maynard saved my 4th Ogden, 20th marathon. :D :D :D Now hoping to recover in time for UVM.

THANKS all for reading this long report!!!

I'm so proud of you Smooth. Way to stick with it. That is amazing. I wish I could have seen you today. Great job, again.

Smooth, GREAT JOB!! I am sorry to hear that you had a hard time here and there but YOU DID IT! You are a die hard and a finisher! We saw Larry watching the race and stopped and talked to him for a bit! You guys are darling and I love how he supports you! However, you are the person that is worth supporting!! Such an inspiration to me! GREAT JOB SMOOTH!!!

From auntieem on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 21:39:18 from 24.18.77.246

Nice job on your finish! Sorry about the Charlie horse(s). So strange that they would plague so close to the finish. Rest up! You deserve it.

From Huans32 on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 21:47:52 from 98.202.0.57

Awesome to see and run with you for a portion of the race. Sorry to hear that Charley was a issue yet again. We got to figure it out so he wont bother us again. Great report.

From Rhett on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 21:54:47 from 184.10.154.170

Way to stick it out through the pain and BQ with plenty of time to spare. I'm so sorry about the Charlie horses. I wish you could get to the bottom of that. Good thing you had Maynard there for some assistance. Larry is probably getting tired of meeting you in the Med tent after the races. :)

From flatlander on Sat, May 15, 2010 at 22:01:47 from 75.223.131.134

Great race, great BQ. Sorry about the pain. I got the worst leg cramp of my life on the park trail of the Ogden Marathon last year, so I have a small idea of how you must have felt. Something about coming out of the canyon and still having several miles left.

From Andy on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 00:11:13 from 198.60.114.178

You really are one tough cookie. I wish you could figure this charlie horse thing out. I was so worried about you when I saw you coming down Grant. Despite the charlie horse, you still posted a great time.

From Bonnie on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 01:33:08 from 64.119.33.134

WOW. What a race Smooth! Congratulations to finishing, and how awesome to have such wonderful friends.

Smooth --

You my SSF are as hardcore as they come. I don't know a single soul who would run marathon after marathon after repeated battles with Charlie.

Listen, let's go to Wasatch Running this week and get you some compression sleeves. It is worth a try, right?

I hope you are sound asleep and that your calves are getting the rest that they need.

What day are you free this week??? I feel like I hardly saw you at all yesterday.

Did you like your slam bag?

From Maynard on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 12:03:52 from 71.213.30.144

Shucks, Smooth... I'm the one that owes you! You truly are an inspiration--99.9% of other runners would most likely have given up after dealing with those cramps like you have. But even in the last three miles, when it started getting tough, you persevered and fought through it. Teena is right--you're HARDCORE through and through. It was an honor to have been able to spend the morning running at your side and I hope there are a great many opportunities in the future.

From KP on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 12:36:27 from 98.67.106.156

Oh Smooth!! when I saw you in pain I felt bad because usually you spring with such energy!! But at least you finished and ran a GREAT time despite!! What an inspiration!! What great friends!! Recover well!!!

Oh Smooth - I just wish you could see what an inspiration to others that you are. You are an amazing woman and a super amazing runner. You persevered through some serious pain and yet you still finished. Way to go. I am so inspired but your dedication. Congrats on your finish!!! The question is, is Larry getting worried having to look for you after your races? He is a good man. Tell him I said HI!

From Scott Wesemann on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 20:14:38 from 75.162.69.51

From RAD on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 21:10:54 from 67.172.229.125

You are simply amazing Smooth! When I saw you with Maynard and the other fellow (I didn't recognize Maynard with the curls gone!!) I just started bawling, and said "take 'er in boys! You're wonderful!" I couldn't believe that Charlie had gotten you again in Ogden!!! UGGGHH!! I wanted to run you in myself and tell you how proud I was of you keeping up to the end. I knew you'd be in the med tent, so didn't look for you. I did see Pres though, and then ran into Lowell. When he came back to lunch with you two I nearly jumped out of my skin to see you!! YAY!!! I was A-glad you weren't still in med tent like Boston's 3 hr stint and B-that I'd get to see you and chat!

I'm glad you're feeling better, now rest well, eat well (not that we didn't hehehe) and I'll see you at UVM *wink, wink* (just don't tell Pres!)

From Smooth on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 21:59:46 from 174.23.172.155

jun ~ Thanks! I'm so proud of your mom! Wish I was there to witness you running her in! She's the inspiring one!

kellie ~ Larry said she saw and visited with you a bit. This is his words: "I really like Kellie. She's a neat girl. Now she and Tyler didn't run the Full because the Bunker Hill steps did them in." Haha! FUNNY! Wish I'd seen you! Thanks for your kind words.

auntieem ~ The strange thing is it doesn't matter whether I run fast or slow, I would get hit with charlie horse at the end or when I finish. It is very painful and frightening. I wish I had an answer to this. Thanks for checking in on me!

Mark ~ It was good seeing you and thanks for running a bit with us. Hope you're rethinking UVM and run it so I get to see you again. If you come across any latest research/findings on how to solve bad charlie horse, pass it on, will ya?

Rhett ~ It was a blessing and tender mercy to have Maynard there. Like the Redeemer, he saved me and helped me when I couldn't have done it by myself. I need to get to the bottom of this cramping issue, otherwise no one would ever want to run with me again in a race. :)

Flatlander ~ Ogden is one race that I always cramp at the end...doesn't matter what pace I run them in. The very first year in 2007, I collapsed in the finisher corral talking to my hubby along the fence, my time was 4:16. The second year I collapsed after I crossed the finish while walking under the mister, my time was 3:59. Last year I ran conservatively in the 10mm pace but had to walk the entire Grant St. b/c of bad cramps finishing in 4:33. I may not run Ogden ever again; may be just the half.

allie ~ I am SO GLAD you were at mile 20ish and not 25 where I struggled. You gave me a HUGE boost! THANK YOU so much for cheering me (us) and for the AWESOME poster! I have never had my very own sign before! It meant so much to me! :)

Maynard ~ I would have given up if it weren't for you! You truly pulled me through in every sense of the word. I am so grateful for you! It is such a blessing to have your friendship! I truly treasured your company of Ogden 2010! Yes, I hope we'll get many opportunities to run together in the future! You're the BEST!

KP ~ Hope I didn't scare you! Maynard and I made the comment that we eat pain for breakfast everyday. Seriously, I wouldn't want to wish that on my worst enemy. I'll get to the bottom of this stupid cramping issue!

Kelli ~ I understand how Scott feels and so do you! I am very very very lucky and blessed to have such GREAT friends as Maynard. Nothin' like adversity and enduring pain to bond friendships.

Julie ~ You're the AWESOME one! I wish I had 1/4 of your speed and toughness. I just realized you won your AG by a huge 13+ minutes. YOU ROCK!

Doone ~ When Larry saw how all my friends, Teena, Marcie(Canyon) and Kathie came in at such good time; he thought I would too. But then when he saw me drag by two guys to the finish, he was worried. He knew that I would be in the med-tent and made his way there. I couldn't have walked out of there without him. Same with Teena. She was worried sick. Then she walked me back to my hotel. No, I'm not an inspiration. I am a big wimp. My friends are the inspiring ones, including you and Rhett! :)

Scott ~ Thanks for your kind words. My hubby can't understand why I keep going back for more punishment...I think my running friends do.

Rachel ~ It was so good to see you and had a lunch chat w/ you. I'm sorry you and others had to see me in that sad ugly finishing state!

From Smooth on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 22:03:29 from 174.23.172.155

Bonnie ~ I am the luckiest girl to have such awesome wonderful friends. I am so grateful for each and every one of them. It is a real blessing to me!

SSF ~ THANK YOU for walking me back to the hotel. Sorry I worried you! You looked so good after your AWESOME race. I decided I want to look and feel that good post race.

Yes, I wanna get me some compression sleeve. I think they will help with recovery if not the cramping issue. Can't wait to see you soon!

Hope you're resting and recovering well. We're going to have fun running this summer!

From DonGardinero on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 22:04:42 from 75.162.166.212

From DonGardinero on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 22:05:28 from 75.162.166.212

P.S. what's this Teena was saying about the Slam Bag? Did I miss out on something cool by not running Ogden?

From AmberG on Sun, May 16, 2010 at 22:36:39 from 97.48.60.62

oh man Smooth.....so sorry about your charlie horses and trip to the med tent! What an amazing time though.....you ran strong and stayed tough through till the end....that shows what a true endurance athlete you are!!! ....running through all that pain! I was so hoping to see you, hopefully at UV I will get to see your smiling face! How great that you were surrounded by such good friends!

From Smooth on Mon, May 17, 2010 at 00:42:23 from 174.23.172.155

Dale ~ It was good seeing you and your darling family.

WRC gave out these recylable bags like the ones you get at Park City marathon. Inside my bag was one water bottle, that's it. Teena got a hat b/c she has a friend there who made her a personal one.

Amber ~ CONGRATS on your AWESOME race and winning $$$. I hope to see your cute smiley self at UVM too.

That was a rough report. I am so glad you had Maynard to help you when thing were so tough. You have helped so many people in so many ways, inspired us all to work harder, push further, be stronger. Maynard was there for you in a way every single one of us wishes we could have been. You have run so many marathons back to back, it's a wonder you're not in traction somewhere. You are one of the toughest ladies I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. I hope you recover and get those charlie horses figured out. HOpe your post -marathon recovery is going well. XOXO

Mike ~ Hi there! So good to hear from you! When's your next race?

Lorie ~ I can't complain. How did your 5K go? When I was running on that trail, I was thinking about you and picturing you running/training on that trail. Wish I could have seen you.

Timp ~ You always say the nicest things! THANK YOU!

Hey Coach Slick ~ You know me too well...I'm one stubborn woman...and lucky one too.

Luz ~ THANKS for your kind words. Not sure how much help or inspiration from me. But this much I know...you and the friends I have met here and on the Flyerforum are great blessings in my life. No one understands and cares about my craziness like you.

I am lucky that I'm not in traction! LOL! Pain is temporary, right?

april ~ I'm addicted to marathoning!

Sweet Marion ~ Wish I had an answer to these darn charlie horses. Yep, very blessed that the Lord put compassionate and caring friends such as Maynard in my life and save me in moments of distress. It really was a tender mercy moment that I will never forget!

Marc ~ Larry tried to reason with me and tell me to run half marathons instead. I am the luckiest girl to be married to such a patient and supportive husband. He was very grateful for Maynard! Thanks for saying the kindest things! I can't wait to see you and meet your family in less than 4 weeks!
