Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Nice 'easy' day...at least no miles! Hope your ITB lets up soon and that you can get rid of it for good!!!

From Rhett on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 15:03:58 from 170.215.58.122

I'm glad you're doing the hib abductors. That will really help with the ITB issues. Are you also doing the adductors to keep balanced? Enjoy the ITB party. Don't let them hurt you.

From Smooth on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 15:09:21 from 71.36.70.118

Smart thinking, Rhett. I haven't done any adductors. I better get on it. Hey, it's a party...no hurting allowed.

From Bec on Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 17:17:11 from 67.177.35.60

I have an exercise I use for the ab and adductors. They are called 'rainbows,' a pilates move. They help strengthen the leg muscles that running seems to not target. I will show them to you. I have done them off and on for a few years and guess what? They never get easier.

From RAD on Fri, Jun 26, 2009 at 10:22:55 from 67.166.99.8

Okay, I'm going to pipe in here on the ITB discussion (always a good topic for me :) ) At PT yesterday morning my PT said she was reading an article about ITBS and its causes. Seems to be an imbalance in the muscles, the inner thigh is stronger than the outer thigh (I can't remember off hand which is AB/AD) which pulls the femur in as you run causing the knee to come off alignment from the hip increasing the 'stretch' of the ITB; which in turn causes the tightness and pain. So, to counteract the problem you need to strengthen the outer thigh area to compensate and balance the muscles. So, to make the long story longer...I would concentrate on the outer thigh and no so much the inner. By equally strengthening them you won't help the problem. Okay, Dr RAD out now.....

Good luck on all the IT band issues girls!!!

Smooth, I am going to try and call Karen this weekend and see if she will do the RHPC Half!

From Teena on Fri, Jun 26, 2009 at 11:04:22 from 67.177.20.13

How are you feeling this morning???

I feel like I haven't talked to you forever! :(

From Bec on Fri, Jun 26, 2009 at 12:26:56 from 67.177.35.60

Good thoughts RAD, I would agree. That is why biking is so good :). You are getting all of the above on the bike if you are pushing and pulling correctly.

From Kathie on Fri, Jun 26, 2009 at 14:51:02 from 207.155.176.10

Nice to see you had an Active rest day all the right moves to get you strong and pain free!

From Smooth on Fri, Jun 26, 2009 at 16:45:01 from 71.36.83.181

Rachel and Bec,

THANK YOU for educating me on the ITB. You need to show me some of those exercises so I can strengthen my legs and take care of the ITB.

This is how I remember which is which with and AB and AD. Abduct is moving AWAY as in someone aBduct your child. ADdcut is the opposite, bring back as in ADDing. So I think the ABductor muscles help move your legs away from the pelvis while ADductor brings the legs back to the center. Someone correct me if it's wrong. Anyway, I need help stablizing my core/pelvis and strengthening the muscles.

Leslie,

O, I hope Karen will come. I haven't seen her for ages. I asked Wendy and Mary this morning if they'd be interested to run the RHPC 1/2. It will be so fun to have them join us too.

Teena,

I haven't talked to you FOREVER! I miss you! I was gonna come to the ITB party but got busy with getting dinner ready and heading down to Provo. Next week I have no presidency mtg. so I'm good any morning. Not sure what the family is doing for July 4th though. Are you and Kelli both running 5/10K next Sat.?

Kathie,

That's the plan. I hope to train healthy and shoot for another BQ at SGM.
