Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Stats from my long runs in the last 5 weeks:

July 3 ~ 18 mi on JRP (AP: 9:54)

July 11 ~  RHPC 13+7= 20 mi on Provo River Trail (AP:  9:54)

July 18 ~ 18 mi on JRP (AP 9:29)

July 25 ~  20 mi w/ stops on West Jordaon JRP (AP: 9:42

Today, 8/1, instead of running the scheduled 13 mi; I want to do a Park City simulated run (3 wks out from PCM) with some at mp.

Ran up to Alpine Canyon going east on SR 92, then north on 6000W and east on Westfield Dr.  The first 5K has a net elevation gain of about 125'.  Saw the Bank of AF hot air balloons over PG by Mt.Timp in the distance.  Thought about Steven & his friends, Bec and the YSAs hiking Timp.   I watched the balloons coming north towards Highland.  Wouldn't you know it... they landed in a field on 6000W just as I was running by.  I waved as they passed overhead.  So COOL!  Splits:  10:53, 10:03, 10:14

The next 5K from Highland to Alpine has another 100' net gain elevation.  Splits: 10:56, 9:54, 10:59.  From mile 6-7 is what I dubbed the "Deer Valley" loop.  It has an elevation gain of 200'.  I heard some awesome bag-pipe music playing by a group camping in the meadow to the east.  It was neat running up the canyon with "Highland" music.  The last difficult ascent was accompanied by "Amazing Grace".  THANK YOU to whoever performed that beautiful ballard.   Ate one gu at the turn around.  Walked quite a bit (11:37).

I did not blast down the canyon, just enjoyed the beautiful scenery (9:38).  Decided to turn east on Heritage Hills Dr. for more Alpine (uphill) running.  At mile 10, I saw a church with cars parked outside.  Stopped to see if I could use the bathroom.  No luck, another runner said the cars where from bikers having a race that morning.   I had run past at least 6 church buildings that had empty parking lots.  I guess none of them was a Stake Center which would be holding baptisms today.  Splits:  10:34, 9:11, 9:28.

Ran west on Westfield Dr. to Highland Blvd. (Suncrest Dr.)  Felt strong running the rolling hills on this 5K stretch, even passed a few runners.  Going south downhill was able to get in a good rhythm.  Splits: 9:45, 8:56, 8:41, 8:46.  Reached SR92 light at mile 14.5 and made the decision to run 3.5 more to make an 18 miler.  I wanted to tempo these as they're in my hood.  Splits:  8:55, 8:40, 8:17.

TT: 2:55:36  AP: 9:45.  Felt good about this run.  The AP hasn't changed much from the last 5 weeks; but felt stronger at the end today.  The legs/ITB handled the hills just fine.  Ice bath while drinking slim fast for immediate recovery.

55.5 miles this week, not my highest mpw which were 63 mi on Feb 21 and 58 mi on March 21.   Debating whether to run another 20 miler next week, two weeks out from PC.  Whadaya think?

Off to do my nehpew's "non-farewell open house."  Have a GREAT weekend, everyone!

Nice run smooth I can't believe you ran that far by yourself. I have done one 20 by myself and it is not nearly as fun as with friend.

So impressive. Way to go.

Your runs always sound so cool. Way to go!!!

You have had an awesome month and week!!!! Nice job!

I would judge another long run on how you feel---are you tired, felling rundown, sick of running? Then don't! But if you are feeling pretty good, go for it!

From Teena on Sat, Aug 01, 2009 at 22:15:15 from 67.177.20.13

YOU SO ROCK!!!!

Missed you so much at the park today. But hope you have had a wonderful day and evening.

You run looks amazing to me. You felt strong because you ARE strong!!

Get some rest tomorrow. (Have no idea about the 20 miler - sorry.)

Kathie,

I used to run solo all the time until joining this blog where I've met some great friends for group run. I am so SLOW that I dare not ask people to run with me. Seriously I agree with you...it's MUCH MUCH MUCH easier to run long runs with friends.

Paul,

THANK YOU!

Dale,

Thanks! I LOVE to run; but training sometimes take the fun out of it. I need to adjust my attitude. How's your knee.

Kelli,

THANKS! Good idea. I'll have to see what this week brings. I have missed you terribly. How's your foot? Hope it is healing well.

Teena,

How was the picnic? Who were all there? I was at my mother-in-law's for the open house from 2 to 8:30 pm. I am tired. Tomorrow the fam. is coming to my house for dinner. The fun continues. LLL LLL LLL LLL LLL

Smooth, the knee pain seems to come and go. It's been hurting for most of the day, but right now it feels fine. Thanks for asking.

Smooth,

This is part of the run I did on Friday, and it's becoming a new favorite of mine. You did a great job with your simulated run. 20 miler before PC? I don't know. You listen to your body very well, so you will know exactly what to do. But that long of a run is probably not too necessary.

Thanks for thinking of the hikers on Timp as you ran. Funny thing is I was thinking about you, and a few others heading out for long runs today.

From RAD on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 01:34:37 from 76.27.12.70

Smooth, I was thinking about doing a 20 miler on Saturday in prep for the 26 at PC. Let me know if you're feeling up to it AGAIN :) and I'll tag along with you!

You did an awesome strong run! Glad the ITB has settled down and that you're feeling so strong!!

From Teena on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 13:50:22 from 67.177.20.13

Smooth,

How are you feeling today?? Any soreness?

Hope you are enjoying your Sunday. One more ward to visit at 3:10 and then I am taking a nap! Hey ... maybe I should take a nap first. Hmmm ....

From Smooth on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 13:58:51 from 71.32.238.231

No soreness! Just VERY VERY VERY HUNGRY! I'm cooking up a storm (the fam. is coming at 4) and can't even have a little taste test.:) Getting ready for church now. I take naps during Sunday School...haven't been caught snoring yet. :-D

From Teena on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 14:01:51 from 67.177.20.13

Oh Smooth!!! I can't tell you how much I love you. And the mere fact that you would joke about sleeping in Sunday School gives me some hope!!! I always feel so spiritually inadequate compared to you. I'm hoping that as your soul sistah that you will fight for a place for me in heaven :).

Love you!!!

EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT!!! Remember how I totally ate MORE than you on Thursday???

You are a GREAT cook!!! I am so jealous of all the benefactors of your cooking! :)

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 16:47:24 from 71.219.100.174

I slept during Sunday School, even though the lesson was very good!!! It is hard to keep your eyes open after so many meetings, huh?

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 16:53:23 from 71.219.100.174

Oh, and to answer your question, my week is not bad! We have a dentist appt tomorrow, but every other day Ashly does not have soccer until 3 so I finally have some freedom!!!! I would love to get out and away.....

From Smooth on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 21:22:53 from 71.36.77.216

Bec,

Wish I could run as fast and fluid as you...then we could run together.

Rachel,

I LOVE to run with you anytime. Will see how I feel on Sat. whether to do 20 or not.

Teena,

How was your nap? I didn't go to Sunday School this afternoon Visited Primary instead. No matter how tired I am, NEVER could doze off in Primary.

I'm counting on Bishop Teena to pull some strings for me in Heaven!!! :-D

Dinner was good. Salmon, grilled chicken, stir fry jumbo shrimps with sugar snap peas, red & yellow sweet peppers, onion and cashew nuts. We had a huge platter of fruits from yesterday's open house...I ate A LOT!!! I'm going for a walk with Larry at sun-set.

Kelli,

Goodie! Tue. is the only day I have something. My nephew is getting set apart at the Church Admin. Office by Elder Alstrom at 1pm. So I can have lunch any day this week. We can go to the temple too, if you like! Let me know!

From MarcE on Sun, Aug 02, 2009 at 22:33:16 from 24.155.140.8

Hey Smooth, Congrats on all the miles you did last week. You're AMAZING!! (though I see Bec beat you and Teena. :-)

If you're taking PC as a 26.2 mile training run, I'm sure you could run 20 miles 2 weeks out without any problems. I hope that Mr. C. Horse stays away this year. I sure wish I could make it out there to PC...it's such a "friendly" marathon.
