Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

First day of June!  What a beautiful start of a new month, week and day!!!

Perfect time to lace up the brand spanking new shoes.  Plus the new socks my daughter gave me for Mother's Day...just in time for the healing blister I got at Ogden.

Ran one mile for warm up then test drive the new shoes for three.  Short and sweet!

TT: 3:10.  AP: 8:47.  Splits: 10:01, 8:43, 8:15, 8:10

I think I will run 4, 6, 4, 6 this week and do the Nestle 5K on Sat .  Whaday'all think of running a 5K one week before Utah Valley Marathon?  I can count in one hand how many times I've run 5K's.  It's way out of my comfort zone.  Last year I ran the same 5K and surprised myself with an AG win.  I am thinking 5K is a good speed work.  I just want to train smart to avoid injury.  Any tips and advice will be appreciated.

that distance is great for speed work. I found that my race last saturday worked in the same way. I really need to learn how to control my breathing at that speed.

Hey we shall finally meet this Saturday!!! I think a 5K before UV marathon is just fine. I ran the blog 5 miler one week before Ogden. Builds confidence, right? anyway...what is your real name Smooth? I don't even know. How silly, I think I should be able to spot you from your blog picture, however. I am working on getting a picture of me running...don't have one yet.

From Smooth on Mon, Jun 01, 2009 at 15:13:04 from 71.36.65.116

jun,

You had an awesome Grizzly race, winning in your AG. I know what you mean by the breathing. I HATE heavy breathing. :)

Julie,

You're very experienced at racing 5Ks/5 miler one week before marathon. I'm not as talented as you. My name is Susanna, it's on my Boston bib pic., kinda blurry. Yeah, we need to see your pic on your blog. I'll bet I have run into you and not even know it. I hope to meet you this Sat. I haven't mailed in my registration yet...still wishy washy.

Hey there Smooth! I've missed you! I need my little dose of "Smooth-Sunshine"!!! We've been out and about so much that I haven't had time to blog, but it's always good to get home and back into the swing of things.

2 things: I LOVE your Boston picture!!! So darling!

Other thing: I would definitely run the 5k this weekend. I always try to do a 5k the weekend before St.George because I think it's the perfect taper/speedwork. I usually do a few warm-up miles and a few cool down so I get 8 in. I don't especially love 5k's either, they are harder than marathons! Ouch, they hurt!

Good Luck! Hope to see you in Utah Valley :) You are so great!

It was so fun to read about your trip to Hawaii too. What a great place!

From Smooth on Mon, Jun 01, 2009 at 15:43:27 from 71.36.65.116

Amber,

Are you home now? I've missed you too. I'm happy you had a nice time in Hawaii and family fun in Jackson Hole. WELCOME HOME! THANKS for the tips on the 5K. Good to know about the warm up miles and cool down. Guess I need to embrace the pain and just do it.

Hi Smooth! Just checking in on you. Have fun anticipating this marathon, now what number is it for you?

From Smooth on Mon, Jun 01, 2009 at 16:06:18 from 71.36.65.116

Hey there Leslie,

Always nice to hear from you. Not much fun anticipating UVM...more like dreading it. Hmm, let's see, I think it's #15.

From crockett on Mon, Jun 01, 2009 at 17:26:20 from 216.49.181.128

Believe it or not, I still have Utah Valley Marathon on my maybe list. (foot willing) It would be a great tempo run to get ready for Bighorn 100 the next Saturday. So see, you do 5K before 26.2. I do 26.2 before 100. It all works.

From Teena on Mon, Jun 01, 2009 at 17:47:43 from 67.177.20.13

After you pulled off Ogden the way you did I am 100% convinced that you can do whatever you want to!! You truly are Super Woman!!! :)

So ... how did the new shoes feel?

I 5K a full week out before a marthon will probably be good for you. For me 5Ks are about making myself keep running fast when my brain says, "SLOW DOWN IDIOT YOUR GOING TO DIE!" Good luck with that, I hate it too.

From Smooth on Mon, Jun 01, 2009 at 19:23:08 from 71.36.65.116

Davy,

You are CRAZY...in a good way! :} How in the world do you do that? That just kills me... doing 26.2 before 100...INCREDIBLE!!! It makes my 5K before mary a wimpy attempt. Can't wait to read all about your Bighorn adventure!

Teena,

The new shoes feel great. I laced them sans the last eyelet. I'm going to get me some neutral shoes for shorter runs. Eric suggests that I try different shoes for a change.

Rhett,

I will have to shut the brain down and be an idiot for 25+ min. See, you speed demon only have to embrace the pain for 17+ min.

From DonGardinero on Mon, Jun 01, 2009 at 19:45:11 from 152.216.7.5

Smooth...If you run the 5k, I would just run it and enjoy it. I wouldn't push hard. You might aggrivate the IT band. Have fun with all your friends at the race.

From Smooth on Mon, Jun 01, 2009 at 20:40:12 from 71.36.65.116

Oh Teena,

I want to tell you: I wouldn't have been able to run Ogden if it weren't for your doctoring me. I really believe that your working on my leg and taping up my knee (twice) did it. Seriously, I owe you big time. Speaking of which, when are we doing lunch?

Dale,

Thanks for the advice. I'm not competitive, just stubborn and a little nuts.
