Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

Canceled plan to run up Suncrest again when Wendy called.   Ran 5 with her then sprinted 0.25 @7:36.  5.25 miles TT: 51:29.  AP: 9:48.

Legs were clunky and feet noisy.  Figured I need to do some speedwork to get quicker leg turnovers.  So after drinking some gatorade and changed into brand new shoes, I continued on to do 3 x mile repeats.

1 warm up mile @ 9:38.

Dynamic flexibility exercises.

1600 @ 7:39.  400 RI in 2:30

1600 @ 7:30.  400 RI in 2:26

1600 @ 7:23.  400 RI in 2:07

1.75 cool down in 14:27

Looked at the watch at mile 6 and realized I could go sub-50 for the 10K so sped up a little to get 49:49 10K time, silly me!

6.5 miles TT: 53:27.  AP: 8:13

Pfitz's stretching exercises.

2 circuits of Pfitz's basic and advanced core stability exercises.

Still debating whether to run DNews as a l-o-n-g hill training run.

Nice splits, you are a marathoning maniac. I have no motivation right now to run another marathon anytime soon. Are you doing Park City too before SGM?

From Smooth on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 15:58:48 from 174.23.191.197

Yes, I have signed up to run Park City. I am doing the Grand Slam for the 4th year. I may run Pocatello which is 2 weeks after Park City.

From Andy on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 16:21:52 from 159.212.71.25

If you are looking for advice about D-News my vote is to skip it. In my opinion, it is too much downhill and an injury waiting to happen. But then again, you are superwoman and can handle anything.

From Smooth on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 16:27:07 from 174.23.191.197

Andy ~ I am NO superwoman! You're the WISE one. You know I highly value your advice. So NO DNews Marathon for me this year.

From Andy on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 16:33:10 from 159.212.71.25

I hope you are not basing that solely on my opinion. You've run it more times than I have so you know what it can do to you. I may be biased because I got injured by running it in 2006. Last year, a friend who was training for SGM asked if he should do it as practice and I advised him not to. He did anyway and ended up injured.

From Smooth on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 16:40:38 from 174.23.191.197

Andy ~ I've only run it twice, 2008 was better than 2007. Didn't run it last year and had better Park City experience. I'm thinking even if I don't get injured, it will take long time to recover. May be by skipping it I will do better at Park City. I may have a shot at the Grand Slam division title if I do it smart this time around!

From Andy on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 16:45:57 from 159.212.71.25

If you want to run well at Park City then I would definitely suggest not running Des News.

From Smooth on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 16:49:45 from 174.23.191.197

So, now trying to decide what to run that day. The DNews 10K is a fast course, so not too honest for a tune-up race. There's Spanish Fork 10K and then your Handcarts Half. Lots to choose from?!!!

From Doone on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 17:00:26 from 184.10.154.170

You are one crazy marathoning grandma! YOU ROCK! You are so fast. Way to go. I suggest you skip all the other races and come run Pocatello with me on Sept. 4th. Have fun and stay injury-free whatever you decide.

From Smooth on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 17:38:51 from 174.23.191.197

Doone ~ You're too funny! Lowell has been bugging be to run Pocatello. So I may just do it this year. I will have to see how I recover from Park City though...so no way I can run WITH you. You will kill me!

I just read an article posted by timp. It frowns on too much marathoning and encourages faster shorter-distance-races! I figure I can do whatever I want since I am a GRANDMA...no pride or shame here! :)

From flatlander on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 17:44:06 from 198.207.244.102

Don't forget to come visit your relatives in Kingwood and run the Texas Marathon on New Years Day. Not sure which marathon you will run in November, but I definitely think you should take December off.

From Smooth on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 17:52:26 from 174.23.191.197

Hey flatlander, thanks for the reminder. My daughter is expecting at the end of Jan. I may just change my traditional holiday plans and fly to Kingwood to run the Texas Marathon on New Years Day and stay to welcome the new grandbaby. Hmmm, wonder what my hubby will say about that. So are you running it? Will be so cool to meet you in person!

I am eying the Valley of Fire in November. But yes, I will take December off to ski, shop and cook; in that order of preference. :)

From flatlander on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 17:59:55 from 198.207.244.102

Yes, I am running it. I just checked, they are currently at 252/300 on the marathon and 157/150 on the half, so almost full. Fees are $55 until the end of this month. Steve (the race director) has been very good in the past about refunding fees if a runner decides to withdraw. He keeps a waitlist and has a small enough event that he can be flexible. Would be great to meet you if you decide to come. Here is the website address: http://www.50statesmarathonclub.com/texas.html#

THANKS for the info. WOW, they're filling up fast. I'm gonna talk it over with hubby! THANKS!

From RivertonPaul on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 18:47:45 from 67.42.27.114

Smooth, you are incredible. For certain, don't register for D-News this early. You can wait till last minute to see how your body feels.

From Calvin on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 18:49:56 from 66.133.117.3

Nice job on your workout Smooth.

As for DesNews, that can be a brutal marathon if you're racing it. But it you did want to use it as a long downhill workout, you're one of the people i'd trust to follow thru with a plan and show restraint.

From calliej on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 19:11:47 from 97.126.132.119

How were the new shoes? Awesome splits!

From Teena Marie on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 20:44:13 from 174.52.45.85

WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!!!!!

I am so impressed! Seriously, very nicely done. :)

You will make the right decision for you. You always do! :)

Love and miss you.

From Toby on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 22:17:33 from 216.194.124.37

Noisy legs - that is funny! That was quite the workout!

From Kathie on Wed, Jul 07, 2010 at 22:54:41 from 63.248.105.188

Wow smooth you are totally hardcore!

From RAD on Thu, Jul 08, 2010 at 15:22:40 from 67.172.229.125

EXCELLENT workout Smooth!!

My vote again goes for the DN10K, but it's not just because I'll be there :)

From Smooth on Thu, Jul 08, 2010 at 18:28:52 from 174.23.191.197

Paul ~ You're right. They let you sign up till the last day of packet pick up.

Cal ~ Thanks for saying that. Not sure about following any plan or showing restraint...it's more like "trying to cheat death" for me.

Callie ~ HI there! How are you? I need to check on your blog. The new shoes worked great...same model, just different colors.

SSF ~ You know me...I'm wishy wawshy! I MISS YOU SOOOO MUCH!

Toby ~ You've been putting in some serious hills riding. Your recovery is looking good.

Rachel ~ You know I hate 5Ks. 10K is TWICE the pain! :) You're running it or just there to cheer? WOW! Nothing stops you, not even a new baby! You're incredible!
