Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!!

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

AM.

"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!" my hubby was singing at 5:30 am.  I put on my shorts and shirts thinking it's a treadmill day.  Ate breakfast while looking out the window and saw that it's calm with light snow falling.  WooHoo! a winter wonderland, time to play!!!

Quickly changed into my winter running gear.  So excited to try out my Boston jacket.  I have worn it, just not run in it .  I put on my yuckiest pair of shoes, no need to worry about cushioning, plenty of that today, sunglasses (snow shield for the eyes) and ski mittens (my fingers going to be toasty).

The whole world is white, quiet and peaceful.  Even my footfalls are muffled.  Running on snow is like running at the beach on wet packed sand, well, a winter version.  It has quite a bit of give.  My joints love it although the pace is significantly slower.  Running on 1"-2" of powder is sheer fun.

On the last mile home I made a mistake by running thru a semi-developed subdivisioin.  There were patches of black ice and snow drifts that I had to navigate.  I slipped a little but didn't fall.  Chunks of snow started to pack under my shoes making the soles a little icy and uneven.  What a fun run with no damage done, YAY!!!

6 miles in 1:02:29.  Average pace: 10:25.  HR: 165.  Arth: 6.

A sad note:  a dear dear friend of ours, my sister-in-law's sister-in-law, passed away during the wee hours today.  She battled with cancer for over two years.   She's one year younger than me, our children are the same age.  We will miss her terribly.  Will be heading down to California for the funeral in a few days.

Thanks for your beautiful description of your run! I am going to have to look on the brighter side. I needed glasses, the snowflakes were stabbing my eyes! It did feel very much like running in the sand.

I am SO glad you had a beautiful run!

From huans32 on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 13:57:57

Great run there Smooth. Sounds like you really enjoyed it. I have enjoyed running in the snow as long as I am not cold.:)

From Rhett on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 15:14:34

Wow, you almost made me want to run in the snow when you were describing your run. Then I remembered that snow is cold and decided I ok without it. Great run! Sounds like you had fun.

From DonGardinero on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 15:36:44

Sounds like a lot of fun.

From Kathie on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 15:43:32

Smooth what a great run!

I stayed indoors today but I think I may break out the snowshoes latter today to see if I can run in them. I am tempted by the snowshoe race Maynard posted on the other forum.

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 15:52:37

Kathie,

You're very adventurous. I'll have to check out the info posted by Maynard. I've never run in snowshoes before. My neighbors already know I'm nuts. If they see me running in them big raquet looking thing, they might think I've gone over the edge.

From marion on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 15:56:42

Come on Smooth- wear the snow shoes! I want to see the picture!! :D

From Rhett on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 16:01:13

Smooth, the mental image of you running around your neighborhood with snowshoes on brought a smile to my face. I want to see the pictures too.

From Smooth on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 16:08:02

Yeah right, that and the pictures of me in crutches afterwards! :D

From fly on the wall on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 18:31:40

Sometimes there is nothing better than a snowy winter run! Hmmm, I've never heard anyone say, "nothing better than a nice long run on the dreadmill."

From Kelli on Tue, Dec 16, 2008 at 23:54:06

GREAT WORKOUT!!!!

That is so funny that you compare running in the snow to sand---Scott said the same thing! But, not me! In the sand you do not have to worry about slipping on your butt! It was very quiet and peaceful though, and I liked that!

From Teena on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 00:29:11

Oh Smooth!!

How in the world do you do it all (and with a smile nonetheless)?

I am sorry to hear about your dear friend. I'm sure the love and comfort you will take with you to the funeral will be greatly appreciated.

(glad Pres. Smooth was singing this morning ... and glad you enjoyed your play in the snow)

Teena,

Thanks for your kind words. I'm having a hard time with Susan's passing. We're praying for the comfort of the Holy Ghost to be with Warren and the children. It's a tough time to be without their mother and wife.

From Teena on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 00:38:00

Smooth,

It is a very hard time for sure. My mom was having a really hard time yesterday (it was her mom's birthday, which is also the anniversay of the day she was buried her- on her 62nd birthday).

Holidays can be very tough when you are missing loved ones.

From Smooth on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 00:44:17

Oh Teena,

I remember you mentioned you had to cut your semester at BYU-H short to come home for your grandma's funeral.

I'm sure you're a comfort to your mother. You are a very compassionate, caring and understanding girl.

THANKS, I needed a "shoulder" to cry on right now. I'd better go to bed or I won't be able to sleep.

Good night, tomorrow will be a new day.

LOVE YOU!

From Teena on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 00:55:14

Love you too.

Good night.

From leslie on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 11:23:41

What a beautiful run! I am working on your positive attitude. I ran this morning and it was really quite nice.

So sorry to hear about your friend, Teena is right, you will be a great comfort to the family, you seem to have a special gift for saying the right thing at the right time to make people feel better.

Okay, I read Pres. Smooth...is your hubby a stake president?

From Kathie on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 12:50:06

Oh smooth I am so sorry. I lost my dad to cancer in 2000, he was just 62. I know all the friends and family that came to support us really helped and I know you will be a big help to them as well.

From Smooth on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 14:11:22

Leslie,

So HAPPY you brave the cold and had a positive run this morning.

THANK YOU for your kindness. I feel like this blog is my daily therapy.:)

Yes, my hubbys is the stake pres. He's only known as Pres. Smooth to Teena. He gets the biggest kick out of her and Ry calling him that.

Kathie,

Cancer is such an ugly monster. I'm so sorry you lost your dad to it at such a young age. Teena's dad is battling with it too. I hope she doesn't mind me telling.

I don't know how much help I would be. This has been a year full of sad goodbyes. I wouldn't know what to do without the gospel and all the faith and hope it brings.

From DonGardinero on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 14:27:34

Smooth...

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm glad you have a lot of friends to help ease the pain. Be strong.

Good job on your run Smooth! (I've been preserving my Boston jacket and wear it only sparingly - not for running yet.)

Sorry to hear about your friend.

From Kelli on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 15:31:10

I am so sorry to hear about your friend! What a hard time of year for such a loss. I will send many prayers your way and to her family. Cancer is such a nasty, scary thing.

From Smooth on Wed, Dec 17, 2008 at 16:24:48

Dale,

Thanks. You're making me feel strong already.

Cal,

Yeah, you should wear your Boston jacket for running when it rains or snows. It kept me dry and comfortable. It holds up really well after washing too.

Kelli,

Thanks for your kindness and prayers. You are a genuinely caring person. LOVE YOU!!!
