Personal:

I'm 64, retired RN, happily married, nana to 14 beautiful grandchildren, mother to 6 children (1 daughter, 5 sons) who are kind, hardworking, caring, wonderful people! Wish they live closer!!!  :)  :)  :)

Picked up running in 2005 at age 50, to stay healthy so I can take care of my husband who had endocarditis resulting in AVR and MVR in 2004, end stage renal failure in 2014, kidney transplant on Dec 30, 2015.  Six months after the kidney transplant, we discovered that he has a rare auto-immune disease that was probably triggered in 2004 with then the undiagnosed infective endocarditis.  The doctors had to make up a name for this rare disease, Monoclono Gammopathy with Renal Significance (MGRS).  It is not curable.  After desperately trying different chemotherapies, the doctor finally found one immuno-therapy, Daratumamab, that works to treat the MGRS.  It is a miracle!!! 

Grateful for the gift of life, blessings, dear friends and loved ones!!! Thankful for the ability to move, walk, jog, and yes run!!!!

A NEW MONTH!  MARCH (Love the sound of that *action* word!)  7 Weeks 'till Boston!!!

First day of a new mesocycle 3 - race preparation calls for VO2max 9 mi w/ 5 x 600 m @ 5K race pace.  Have I mentioned VO2 max is a scary word for me?  But, it's a new month and the weather is PERFECT so I found the courage to tackle this workout on the HS track.

Ran 3 miles down to the high school via Center St. which I thought to be the safest and shortest route until I encountered two dogs half way there.  Made it to the HS in exactly 3 miles.  (9:38, 9:46, 9:21)  Went inside to take a drink from the fountain and heard whispering of "that's Steven's mom." :D

Did the 8 dynamic flexibility exercises by the entrance of the track.  Only a few kids on the field and no one running, goodie! :)  Splits for the 600m and the 200m (RI):  2:43 (1:29) 2:47 (1:39) 2:50 (1:27) 2:50 (1:30) 2:47 (1:31).  I always go out too fast on the first set.  It's been over 5 months since I last ran on the track when I wore shorts instead of tights.  Ran another lap to make it 6 miles even, then went inside for a quick drink.

Took a different route home (avoiding the dogs on Center).  Ran up on the freeway overpass to Frontage then up 3rd West, mostly uphill.  Kept telling myself "hills are my friends."  Made it home in exactly 3.25 miles (9:17, 9:18, 9:27, 8:55); surprisingly faster than the downhill warmup miles.  Total running time: 1:25:15.  AP: 9:13.

I'm going to have the cookie my visiting teacher gave me last night!  :)  Hope everyone is enjoying the day and off to a GREAT start of new month and week!!!

VO2 workouts shouldn't scare you. It feels good to run fast and as soon as you are really uncomfortable it is time for a break. Look how perfectly you ran them.

Andy ~ Thanks! There's the difference between you (DA Speedy Andy) and me (DA slow-poke granny). It doesn't feel good to run fast for me. I don't like that gasping-for-air-gonna-die feeling. But it does feel very good AFTER the workout! :)

I haven't been reading your blog enough to be sure, but that really looks like a the first workout of mesocycle 3 from the 55-70 MPW plan from Advanced Marathoning. Is that what you're doing? I'm doing that training plan, but I only on week 5 of mesocycle 1 because my goal race isn't until June.

I also do dynamic flexibility exercises before running, but I only have 7 of them, not 8.

I didn't realize we had so much in common.

Carolyn ~ Yep, I'm on week #6 of Pfitzinger's 70/18 plan. I have used his 55/18 twice training for the two previous Bostons.

So excited for your June marathon. Looks like you're right on track (week #13 is the peak of mesocyle 1).

I only do the dynamic flexibility exercises (from Brain Training) when I do intervals or speed work: tilt walk, zombies, trunk rotation, lunge walk, lateral lunge, forward leg swing, lateral leg swing, and heel bounce.

I have read your blogs off and on and am SO IMPRESSED with your progress and dedication. Your training and race times are AWESOME!!!

I counted wrong. I do all 8 dynamic flexibility exercises from Brain Training. I try to do them before every run (because I need all the help with flexibility I can get), but I've been known to skip them when I've been in a time crunch.

Kelli ~ I thought I would binge on sugar and treats yesterday; but for some weird reason didn't even feel like it. I did eat a huge dinner; then had popcorn, ritz crackers and almond for treats after FHE while watching 24. I think I must have needed salt more than sugar.
