AM:  78F, 86%.  15 @ 8:11 AP.  I set out to do 20 this morning but determined pretty early on that I would be cutting it short.  I decided to run the last 2 miles hard to make up for it (6:42, 6:18) but I'm definitely ok with 165 miles in 10 days.

So I don't know if this supercompensation theory is legit or not but at the very least, it's keeping my average volume up despite the fact that I won't be able to run for 4-5 days, so I don't have to feel bad about my upcoming period of extreme inactivity.  It also was good to train myself to plod around on legs that feel about twice as heavy as usual.  I often imagined myself in mile 40 of my upcoming ultra and wondered if that's how it would feel.  I bet it'll be much worse.

And I think I did it all without overtraining - still had normal energy at work, home, etc.  Another week of this and I think it would've been too much for me, as the sleep deficit grows bit by bit and today kinda showed me I didn't have the legs for much more either.  It would be interesting to try this in the winter and see if recovery is easier.

Alright - let the healing begin!

I think it was a cool experiment and did more good than harm, for sure. The duration was appropriate... enough to drain you, but not enough to wreck you... stress --> adapt. You learn a few things by doing something like this - it sort of resets the "how much am I capable of running?" barometer... 70 mile weeks should (in theory) feel like a breeze compared to this! And you also realize the importance of sleep during high mileage blocks :-)

It will be interesting to see how you feel after the off days.

Thanks Jake. I was thinking the same thing about the 70 mile weeks...stupid legs better respond when I put them through workouts now.

It also kind of redefined "easy" pace, which I've now proven to myself has a very direct relationship with mileage/volume.

Looking forward to getting some sweet Ray Bans. Thanks for the invite.

Pretty sure my account got hacked....my wife just asked me about ray bans too. WTH!

Have you been following a specific training plan or making it up yourself? (Not that I would ever try anything like this...just curious.)

From SlowJoe on Wed, Aug 05, 2015 at 14:22:09 from 45.18.50.53

IJR - I got the basics of the concept from the article below, but I made up the rest...which was pretty easy because there were zero workouts in my version!

165 in 10 days, and finishing with the fast 2 is outstanding. Like IJR, I would never try anything like this. Really impressive work, Joe. Enjoy your rest time.

I finally figured out where you got the inspiration to run 17 miles / day:

Eminem was more into even doubles than you, though.

Agreed and congrats! I am most impressed that you did not feel like you over trained. I think I'd fall asleep at work with that kind of mileage right now.

From SlowJoe on Thu, Aug 06, 2015 at 20:11:43 from 45.18.50.53

Thanks Tom!

Jake - I have more in common with that article than I care to admit...

Allie - no. more. pain.

Dan - the sleep was the missing ingredient... if I was a professional athlete, this might be easier...
