40F, S 17-23 mph.  7:07 AP.  Workout fail today.  Ended up with 9 MP @ 6:44 AP.  I was pretty sure this one would be a struggle, but it was more painful than I thought.  Felt terrible from mile 1 and when mile 9 rang in at 7:01, I deceided to bag mile 10 and jog it home (even though mile 10 was a nice downhill).  Kept remembering the adage about not coming in 1% overtrained...

My 7-day running mileage total is 93, and this was somewhat close to my 22-miler (3 days separation), so I know why it sucked, but I still think I should have felt a little better.  At the beginning of the cycle I was doing this same route close to 6:30 pace with less effort.  Anyway, I have 3 easy days in a row planned, so I think I can fix myself between now and my next workout on Sunday.  I will also have a chance to redeem myself on my 10-days-to-go MP workout next week, with much fresher legs.  Come back to me, legs!

You've been logging a ton of miles Joe. Very impressive you could do 9 at 7 minute pace. Next couple workouts will be confidence boosters! Great work.

Good days bad days. I'd call this an inbetweener day. Maybe glycogen stores slightly depleted? Body fighting off something, etc, etc, etc.

Main thing is that you halted the workout and let sense prevail. Because you eased back today, you've given your body a chance; if you hadn't plugged it today, you may have done irrevocable damage.

Keep an eye on the peripheral things like nutrition, sleep, hydration etc and you'll be fine in a couple of days.

I'd suggest taking a couple of easy days on the mileage front - at this stage, hammering out prescribed miles will do more harm than good, whereas, easing back might just allow your body to adapt to the final stages of your training block.

All you need is some rest and easy...

Matt - thanks, plan is to take it easy and hit the last couple workouts hard

Bam - thanks for the input, I think there will definitely be a little mileage-shaving the next few days, then Sunday will tell me if I'm back to normal again. I think I've been walking a tightrope these last few weeks, on the edge of doing too much.

IJR - definitely!

Bam said it best. Can't all be great days - smart to not force it. Physically you'll bounce back fine, just don't let this hit you too hard mentally.

From SlowJoe on Wed, Mar 27, 2013 at 10:01:13 from 155.219.241.10

Jake - thanks, pretty sure it's just some residual fatigue; still plenty of time to get a couple confidence-boosting workouts in..

From Jason D on Wed, Mar 27, 2013 at 10:08:06 from 128.210.82.162

I see a sub-3:00 hour tempo on an off day, but I know the feeling of hitting shy of expectations. Coach Bam is on as usual.

You're right, that is the silver lining. Maybe the lesson is if I totally pork the taper/race it could still possibly be sub-3.

You have been training hard, this is that last grueling month, and things are tired. You will come flying of your taper, Flying!
