34F.  Down to the track for the dreaded 16 x 400.  My only real guideline for pace was to keep it faster than 17:59/5k pace which is 86.3/lap.  I did 200m active recoveries between repeats.

Average 84.6 (83.7, 85.6, 84.9, 83.6, 86.1, 87.0, 83.7, 84.9, 84.2, 84.9, 83.2, 84.6, 86.2, 83.9, 84.2, 83.3)

Standard deviation 1.1 sec, so kinda bounced around a little.  For the 5th and 6th repeats, I changed my technique and relaxed the first 200 and tried to finish hard.  But that actually produced the slowest splits.  My best ones were when I ran the first 100 hard and held on for dear life, even though it meant tying up a bit at the end.

Back in June I did 12 x 400 and averaged 84.5, so this was probably a bit of improvement from that, since I'm sure I could have gone faster if I only had to do 12.  My legs were also a bit heavy from the recent mileage today, so overall a decent session.  No way I could have done 20 though...no way!

Never say never... :-)

What a good run Joe, I knew you were going to blow it away!

Nice job - it's in the books now.

Great workout Joe. Keeping them at a touch under 5:40 pace off a short recovery is good going. It'll make mp feel like a walk in the park.

You'll be doing 20-25 this summer! :-)

Another good session. Way to keep knocking 'em out Joe.

Great session, Joe. I bet you said the same about 16 that you now say about 20!

Nice! You nailed those! That is a lot of fast 400s with not much recovery! wow!

From JG on Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 18:28:18 from 174.49.78.66

Awesome Joe! Just to show you up, after 8 miles today I ran one in 82 seconds ... of course, that was pretty much an all out effort! :)

From Dan on Wed, Jan 23, 2013 at 20:23:08 from 24.209.83.20

Nice job Joe, that's impressive. I am wondering. You said you couldn't do 20. Could you do 17? :) Seriously great run.

Thanks all.

April - Believe me, I was milking that 200m toward the end...got close to 10:00 pace on the last few, in lane 2 or 3!

JG - No 82's for me!

Dan - The last one really felt close to a sprint and it wasn't really any faster. Maybe 17 next time!

Delayed, overdue comment - good looking workout, Joe. I liked seeing the sub-5 mile and 2:4x marathon pop up on your goals. :)
