I met MatthewVH to do Grandeur Peak this morning at 6:30 am via the West Ridge route. It wasn't as cold as it has been the last few weeks, so I didn't bring a jacket. The route was entirely covered in snow and it was actually a bit slick, so after a few minutes on the trail Matt ran back to my car to borrow an extra set of trekking poles that I have.

We had a really fun time making our way up the ridge. We joked and laughed and it actually slowed us down a lot, but we didn't care. The trail was slippery and some micro-spikes would have really helped. about half way up it started to snow on us, but it didn't last long.

Up on the summit ridge the snow was really deep, and Matt got stuck a few times. We made it to the top in a slow 1:55 where we hung out for about 20 minutes talking and enjoying the views. 3 guys came up from the other side of the mountain and we chatted with them for a few minutes. One of the guys is an ultra runner with several 100 milers under his belt.

We went a lot faster on the way down and the poles really helped. When we were about .5 from the trailhead we ran into some friends from the Wasatch Mountain club that we both knew, so we chatted for a few minutes and then ran back to the car. What a fun morning. I'll post up some pics a bit later (Peak jumping picture fail). We gave up after Matt missed me 7 times.

Oh so jealous! I will definitely do this one with you when the snow is gone, I love love love Grandeur Peak!! Sounds like a wonderful Saturday AM run, glad the 'boys club' had a good time out harassing each other :)

While on the pipeline trail today I had a hard time not going up the church fork trail to the summit. I would have had I not had a time commitment to keep.

Fun Run. I need to do that peak in the winter sometime. Let me know if you go again.

Rad- You should join us now. The snow isn't much to worry about. :)

Jun- We should do it from that side soon. I actually want to do the entire ridge if you're game. Matt and I talked about early next month.

Twinkies- I will.

Wow - what a way to start your day! Great run/climb!

Hey Scott,

Nice vert today.

I checked out the 2010 results for the Pony Express 50 you did. Great job. I was amazed though that there were 19 participants with 14 finishing. Apparently there are two Pony Express 50 milers (maybe more?). One has forty 1.25 mile loops. The other is the one you ran. That is some serious distance. When I run races, usually there are so many people I do not worry about taking a wrong turn or getting lost because there are always people in front of me. But with 50 miles to run, 19 entrants and different start times, how do people not get lost or take a wrong turn???

Nice climb! I need to make it down that way. Time to start some vert.

Can't wait to see Pics, it sounds incredible!

Hey PRE it would be very hard to get lost doing the Pony Express course. You basically run the old Pony Express trail the whole way and it is a long dirt road. I only saw a few smaller roads that turned off the main road, but it was pretty clear where to go. The 100 milers run basically the same course, but at mile 50 they keep going for another 8 and then turn around and run 34 miles back.

Can't wait to see the pix! the plyometric workout you had from leaping so often had to be well worth it...Perhaps a camera with video would be best?
