Personal:

Born 1972 in north central Wisconsin

Married for 11 yrs to very supportive non-running wife. Two children : Fiona, 6 (in picture) and Elliott (2 yrs)

Co-Race Director of  Delano Park 12 Hour Run (www.delano12.com). President of River City Runners (www.rivercityrunners.org)

3 cats and 1 dog (chocolate lab)

In high school, I was an slightly overweight , badly asthmatic J.V. cross country runner.  I enjoyed being part of the team but never excelled.   The summer after my freshman year in college I decided to run a marathon.  6 weeks later I ran a 3:11 at Grandma's Marathon in Duluth (1991) and I was hooked on long distance running where my asthma wasn't as much of a factor.

Did the commute to work on foot today.

Started in the dark @5:45.  Weather was great-  mid fifties I think.  Carried our 3M club's Liz Hurley entries to the mailbox at Decatur general - 10 this year.  a couple first time 5K in the group. Felt good.  After mile 2 , I started to negative split each mile until I was in sight of work.  Miles 7 and 8 were 7:10 and 6:56.  Took the short route down Highway 24 because the train got me off course.  I regretted it.  Its a 1/4 mile shorter but that road is busy and has no shoulder.    Caught a few nasty whiffs while passing the Wayne Farms south plant (chicken kill plant) on ipsco rd.  I'm glad they make the chicket nuggets and not me.

I felt tired at 4pm when it was time to head home.  I was well fueled though and it showed. Ravioli and trail mix for lunch.  Cliff Bars in the afternoon and plenty of water (some coffee too).  I stayed pretty steady  and averaged 7:34/mile on the 9.4 miles back (long scenic route).  Got a whiff of the other wayne farms plant (chicken cooking).  That was a pleasant smell.     Two other olfactory highlights were McCullom's seafood and a guy tilling his garden.  I love the smell of freshly turned dirt for some reason.  Its was considerably warmer in the afternoon.  Miles 8 and 9 were 7:14 and 7:22.

Got home and then took the dog and Elliott for a 1/2 hr walk.

I just can't believe you commute ON FOOT from SE Decatur to 3M in the morning and back home in the evening, and then think I'M the one from another planet!!!! :o)

Good run, and a nice, convenient way of getting miles. I won't lie; I'm somewhat jealous of your mileage...

Good job on the commute-to-work routine. The first time you did it it was impressive, but to keep doing it even after you know what you're getting in to is really impressive. I like your olfactory tour of Decatur. I think you and my dog Abbie have the same perspective on the world when out for a run.

thanks. I plan on trying to do it once per week at least. Maybe I'll try twice per week once before the marathon. Next year, I hope to do it every day one week in preparation for the run across alabama.

What's the story on this run across Alabama?

From schotz on Fri, Oct 03, 2008 at 21:08:35

Jon and I are still working the route but it will be Mississippi to GA through north Alabama. Probably early June 2009. The working name of the run is "Elliott's Run Across Alabama" . We plan to try to raise a little money for Tay Sachs disease research through ntsad.org. We are planning it as a stage run in 5-6 days. 30-40 miles per day.
