Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Usual run today, more or less. I did 12+1, Benjamin did 8+3.9, Stephen 2, William was still having issues and could run only 1 mile, other kids ran their usual distances. Benjamin and I did a pickup for a mile down the canyon. His target was 5:00, mine to keep up for as long as possible. He went a bit faster - 4:49 (74,73,73,69) but the first quarter was rather uneven with a quick start, too much slowdown then too much pickup for me. I made it to about 600 meters, then did not have the juice, coasted at around 5:20 and ended up with 5:10.

Stephen ran twice the distance today. Julia took him in the morning and he got 9:34 for the mile. That earns only one fruit snack. Later in the day he realized he was not happy with the outcome and wanted to earn another fruit snack. I told him he could do it by running one more mile in under 9:20, so this added one more mile for me, and he earned his extra fruit snack by running 9:02.

Benjamin did 8+3.8. I ran with him in the morning. We did 4x0.25 down the canyon targeting 72 - ended up a little faster on average.

Younger kids did mile time trials on the track. Everybody who tried got a PR. Joseph ran 5:42.6, Jacob 5:53.0, Jenny 6:00.5 qualifying for a driving learners permit, and Julia 6:31. William got a PR in 100 - 20.0. I got quite a workout - after 4x0.25 earlier with Benjamin I did 3 almost consecutive miles - 6:00, 5:53, 5:42. I was not doing a whole lot of cheering in the last one.

Took Benjamin for the practice Provo River Half Course run. This time he ran 10 miles in 54:23 - about a minute off target for 1:10. He was on pace at 6.5 (34:19), but the headwind on the uphill mile, which he did in 6:32 (target around 6:00) killed the deal. So I told him to go to 10, which he did. Other splits were 12:55 at 2.5 (target 12:49), and 20:50 at 4 (target 20:36). Big improvement from last week when he was already 2 minutes behind pace at 6.5. So his fitness is returning. I signed him up for the Haunted Half.

Benjamin did a total of about 14, I ran portions of his tempo driving from spot to spot and joining him at convenient locations. Then I added 7 more miles, the total was somewhere around 15.

The younger kids except Matthew ran their usual distances on their own. I ran 200 meters with Matthew.
