Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Today I paced Sarah on the track through the mile in 7:29.3 (splits 1:49, 1:54, 1:54, 1:49). For some reason she has been having a hard time hitting fast times on the the track. We need to figure out what is going on. But this is an improvement - her fastest track mile so far.

I also paced Julia through a 6:00 pace to failure then break workout. She did 800-400-400.

Did a mile pickup down a small grade in 5:33.

Kids ran their usual distances mostly on their own.

Today Matthew surprised us. He volunteered to run on the Big Boy course (1 mile out and back with hills) and set a PR of 8:07.2 (1:46, 2:02, 2:09, 2:10). So he clearly had probably around 7:45 on the track, but getting him to do it on the there would be tricky. He likes the Big Boy course because it is on a nice trail and because of the Big Boy status. Track does not have the same appeal.

Otherwise we all ran our usual distances more or less.

Today Joseph and Jacob had a breakthrough in the 2 mile tempo down the canyon. Joseph ran 11:10 (2:50,2:44,2:49,2:47), Jacob 11:23(2:50,2:49,5:44). Joseph improved by 26 seconds, Jacob by 14. Converting this to sea level track 3000 this would be around 10:28 for Joseph and 10:40 for Jacob. Just as I started to get concerned that they might be plateauing, they progressed.

Matthew wanted to run the Big Boy course again and ran 8:08.

William ran almost 5 miles. Otherwise, more or less usual distances for everybody.

Layton Classic 10K, 37:27, 7th overall, 2nd master, $50.

Riley Cook won with 32:16. Matt Wolpert was the first master with 35:52. Dennis was the third master with 37:33.

I did this race with no tapering, and ran the first mile conservatively - 25 seconds slower than last year. Then I started pushing more, but was still 29 seconds slower overall than last year in spite of the fact that last year I lost about 5-10 seconds on a chip incident around mile 2. I ran well compared to last year on the uphill, but for some reason I just could not shift gears on the downhill.

During the warm-up I felt somewhat sluggish. When I finished I did not feel tired or sore - in fact, quite energetic. Except I just could not go any faster. I decided I wanted a bit more tempo running for the day and ran a mile in 5:57 on the nearby high school track.

Then at home I ran 4 more miles with the kids. Raced Joseph over the last uphill quarter - we tied with 81.5.
