Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Stephen's attempted mile time trial. He opened with 2:05, which was good, then slowed down to 2:25. At that point I told him to just finish it under 9:00, he sped up to 2:15 in the next lap, but then shortly after started crying and stopped.

William decided to do a mile time trial in the canyon today. Joseph, Jacob, Jenny, and Julia helped me pace him. He ended up running 6:28.5. His start was very fast - 19 seconds for the first 100, 41 for the first 200, then 87 at the quarter. The 6:00 guy did not catch him until 500. He ran 1:41 for the next quarter (3:08 at 0.5, new PR), then 1:41, and 1:39. This is worth somewhere around 6:40 on the track, which would be quite an improvement over his 6:58. I wonder what his PR will be before he turns 7 in October.

Joseph and Jacob did 4, Julia 3.5, Jenny 5, Stephen 1, Benjamin almost 12.

Benjamin and I did a 2 mile tempo down the canyon at the very end in 10:54 with the splits of 5:26,5:28.

Today was a more or less usual day, except Stephen did a mile time trial at Orem High. He missed his record by 1.4. Splits 2:07, 2:09, 2:08, 2:04 - the balance going towards the 9.34 m tax.

Did two runs today. 20 in the morning, and 2 with Sarah at night. Chad joined us for part of the morning run. Benjamin did 15, Joseph, Jenny, Julia, and Jacob 5, William 3, Stephen 1.

Forgot the Fast Running Friend watch,  borrowed a simple one from the kids.

The older kids minus Benjamin did a 3 mile tempo run down the canyon. Joseph got 18:50 - Chad paced him, splits 6:21, 6:14, 6:15. Benjamin ran with Jacob - his first mile was 6:21, then he fell back a bit and ran more or less even pace to the finish. Jenny ran alone, but was never more than a few seconds ahead of me and Julia and got 20:34. I paced Julia and we ran 20:44 (6:42, 7:00, 7:02).

Then the kids ran home with Jenny and I did a workout with Benjamin and Chad. 2 miles up the canyon, recovery, then 4 miles down. On the way up, Benjamin 11:39 (5:46, 5:53), myself 12:01 (5:55, 6:06), Chad 12:57. On the way down, Benjamin 20:45 (5:07,5:10,5:15,5:13), myself 22:33 (5:37,5:37,5:40,5:39), Chad around 24:30. It got warmer towards the end. I felt strong but not fast on the second interval.

Then we ran home, I ran with Stephen and William, and then I ran back to the car with William and the stroller. William ran 2 miles, then I put him in the stroller.
