Olympic Trials Qualifier

Running Accomplishments:

Best marathon: 2:23:57 (2007, St. George). Won the Top of Utah Marathon twice (2003,2004). Won the USATF LDR circuit in Utah in 2006.

Draper Days 5 K 15:37 (2004)

Did not know this until June 2012, but it turned out that I've been running with spina bifida occulta in L-4 vertebra my entire life, which explains the odd looking form, struggles with the top end speed, and the poor running economy (cannot break 16:00 in 5 K without pushing the VO2 max past 75).

Short-Term Running Goals:

Qualify for the US Olympic Trials. With the standard of 2:19 on courses with the elevation drop not exceeding 450 feet this is impossible unless I find an uncanny way to compensate for the L-4 defect with my muscles. But I believe in miracles.

Long-Term Running Goals:

2:08 in the marathon. Become a world-class marathoner. This is impossible unless I find a way to fill the hole in L-4 and make it act healthy either by growing the bone or by inserting something artificial that is as good as the bone without breaking anything important around it. Science does not know how to do that yet, so it will take a miracle. But I believe in miracles.

Personal:

I was born in 1973. Grew up in Moscow, Russia. Started running in 1984 and so far have never missed more than 3 consecutive days. Joined the LDS Church in 1992, and came to Provo, Utah in 1993 to attend BYU. Served an LDS mission from 1994-96 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Got married soon after I got back. My wife Sarah and I are parents of eleven children: Benjamin, Jenny, Julia, Joseph, Jacob, William, Stephen, Matthew,  Mary,  Bella.  and Leigha. We home school our children.

I am a software engineer/computer programmer/hacker whatever you want to call it, and I am currently working for RedX. Aside from the Fast Running Blog, I have another project to create a device that is a good friend for a fast runner. I called it Fast Running Friend.

Day of rest. Went to church. Good talks in the sacrament meeting on finding peace in troubled times. The lesson in Sunday school was on baptism. It was fifth Sunday, so we had a combined meeting with a presentation on missionary work.

A.M. 12.18 with Jeff in 1:30:40. Benjamin ran the first 2 miles with us in 14:51. The last quarter was 89. We did a 1.5 pickup in the middle. The plan was 86 - 85 - 84 - 83 - 82, then speed up to to 82 pace, and then run the last 100 in 15. Overall we maintained the target pace, but it was rather erratic. So instead of a progression run we ended up with a weird fartlek of sorts: 86 - 83 - 87 - 82 , then 300 in 60, and the last 100 15.5 for me, 14.5 for Jeff. Total time was 8:18.

Jenny and Julia ran 2 miles.

P.M. 0.5 with Joseph in 4:42. 0.25 with Jacob in 2:37.

A.M. Ran 10 miles. Met Jeff on the trail. We went to the BYU track to do a time trial. Jeff did 400, I ran the last 200 with him. He ended up with 57.2, I ran 28.9. I was actually able to pass Jeff and finish a step or two ahead. I did have a concern that if he were running really well and hit a 27 or even a low 28 in the last 200 I might get dropped. That would have been embarrassing, but fortunately for me Jeff was tired this morning from the 20 on Saturday and 15 on Monday. New 200 meter PR for clogs, though.

I was happy with the result. I was expecting something like 29.5 - 30.0 given the lack of recent sprint training and the lack of proper warm-up as well.

P.M. Ran with the kids training group. Ended up with 2.25 miles. Jacob did 0.25 in 2:23. Joseph 0.5 in 4:10. Jenny ran 2.5. Julia did 1.5. I paced Benjamin through 800 in 2:44, a new PR with the splits of 41.5 - 41.5. - 42 - 39.

A.M. 10 with Jeff in 1:09:58. Did a couple of pickups at 5:50 pace. Jenny and Julia ran 2.

P.M. Benjamin was sick (stomach flu), so he just ran 1.25, including 0.5 with Joseph in 4:31, and 0.25 with Jacob in 2:21, and then additionally 0.5 in 3:58.  I ran the same distance.
