Triathlons are my New sport and I LOVE IT

Recent last few years  as I havent done much since I was 16/17yrs, on and off injuries, going out with Friends started. Operations on injuries- compartment syndrome front of the shin had small operation to release the pressure on the fascia.

Oct 2007.  Did the great north run.  ( I was in the elite ladies race, against Kara Goucher and Paula Radcliffe, Im sure u Americans will recall that race).

I was just in on my previous times from the Bath Half Marathon. I ran it as best as I could off my training & circumstances...

Decided to do my 1st Marathon with London looming in the following April I was in the ladies Elite race again.  So the training was on.  I realise now I didnt give my body enough time to recover as it did break down in the last 5 weeks of my training. Injury bound, with calf and hamstring problems I raced!

London Marathon, April 08 (Injury calf issues) 1st marathon  3hrs.12mins .30 secs

Dublin Marathon  Oct 08  3hrs.01mins.13  undulating and 1 toilet stuck/stop (LOL)

Bath Half 2007    1.26.35 hrs

Wilmslow half marathon english champs    1.25.39

18th lady  (With piriformis injury ).

Liverpool 10k 2008 Oct 37.42mins midst marathon training

Wirral 5k 2009 17.41mins off the back off marathon week

Track 3000ms 10.45mins  hmmm I ran this to get points for my club so I just did tactical and ran on 1st lady shoulder and sprinted at the end !

As a youngster

County Champion for Xcountry and

High Jump

and 1500ms track.

pbs aged 13 yrs old

800ms 2mins 16secs

1500ms 4mins 48 secs

high jump 1metre 53  (cant do this now) and I never trained for it as a kid, just competed alot for points for my club, usually spend 2 hours highjumping, and skip off to do an 800 or 1500ms race then go back to high jump, Wish I took the running more seriously!

Run on more than several occasions for my County against Ireland county of Dublin.

Top 50 finnisher at 14yrs of age in english nationals Xcountry.

I have been ill with a tummy bug since Friday night, my calves were sore too, but by Sunday morning I was actually feeling okay and I had fuelled Sat night for the long run just in case I felt okay.

Went out allot easier than the last time I did the 15.5 miles with tempo run for 6 of the last miles.

This time round I went out at 8 min pace with the odd slightly faster miles within the 8 miles out then 7 miles at tempo marathon pace and a half mile warm down. here are the splilts;

8.02

7.38

8.13

7.57

7.53

7.54

7.37

7.46 cross wind

mile 9 7.11 started but it was a strong cross wind

 10= 6.58

11=7.00  this was a hard mile, more like a fartlek mile some was at 6.30 pace then at 8 min pace I ended up having to stop as well with 0.10 miles to go for a road I did stop the stop watch though!

12= 7.05  I sheltered by the side of my husband he was cycling strong cross winds

13= 6.55   I sheltered by the side of my husband he was cycling  v strong cross winds

14=6.52 head on wind   couldnt shelter

15=6.57 head on wind   couldnt shelter

All in all it was a mile further at pace although my tempo pace should be faster more 6.50 pace for the marathon..... although this should be more how I feel near the end of the marathon as I had done 8 miles before going into the tempo run.

I am happy but feeling lethargic and heavy running I am sure its the high mileage catching up with me and I may cut my recovery runs slightly next week but hoping to do doubles instead...... so thats either early morning runs or evening runs we will see as I am not a morning person ha ha :)

Ugh, I am not a morning person either..except maybe for 3 months in the summer. :D

Do you drink coffee before a run like that? Just curious...

I used to be able to run on an empty stomach, but now I always have like 200 calories in the a.m. if I am running early, otherwise I get sick. Maybe I can retrain myself to go without food..

I hope you get better soon...tummy bug is really going around!

Oh, and evening runs in the Summer are so fun...love starting at 9pm just as it is getting dark.

Good that you are feeling better :)

Often I find it is not the body breaking down physically after the hard training but the neural fatigue/nervous system stress that causes the problems

You need a fancy alarm clock then you can be like me and get up at 0530 everyday! LOL It is possible to do 15 miles on a glass of orange juice, not tested any further!

I need to be in bed by 9pm or I won't wake up! LOL

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Sun, Feb 28, 2010 at 18:00:57 from 90.201.147.80

Missy, yeah a cafe Nero 3 shot coffee LOL I treat these runs like my long run, I fuel allot the night before, and then have a decent amount of carbs through cereal and toast!

I love runs in the summer in the morning or evening its great cant wait for spring running my favourite month.

Chris I need more than an alarm clock to get me up at that time LOL ha ha yeah I could get round 15 miles on an empty stomach Chris but not at a decent pace though and orange juice would probably make matters worse as its acidic and I have had ulcers in the past from stress huh so not my idea of fuel ha ha LOL

From ChrisM on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 05:18:01 from 130.88.123.4

I know some triathlon people like to east crazy numbers of slices of toast with jam on for fuel!

I have an idea to get you awake that early... It is called a bucket of icy water! LOL

Great run Sam! So um, I don't drink coffee and I never eat anything before any morning runs (even on race day). Maybe I should change my habits? I'm scared I might have to make a potty stop on race day.

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 07:52:03 from 78.32.130.9

Vinh- If you eat 3hours before you shouldnt make a potty stop, but theres always the chance if your stomach goes south LOL now I always eat the night before a good carb meal, then the morning a decent breakfast but yesterday I got up late ate late and ran too soon, so potty stop I did but it was well before the tempo run so okay I didnt mind.... I drink coffee everymorning so nothing unusual there....everyone is different if your going to change something try lots of times before race day :) p.s i have only had to use the potty once on my 2nd marathon and never before in any distance race !

From Samantha Dean-Howard on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 07:53:06 from 78.32.130.9

Chris its a homer mmmmmmmmm TOOOOOOAAAAAASTTTTTT for me I love toast but apparently bread has lots of sugar in it so its not ideal I havekicked bread in to touch for 2 weeks now and it has become something i crave like chocolate LOL

From ChrisM on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 08:09:18 from 130.88.123.4

I guess it depends on which kind of bread! There is always the funny ryebread kind of stuff that you get in Germany, not quite the same though

I like the look of the Brioche Bread in the supermarket I think I *need* to get some LOL

I can eat porridge and tea and then go run 12 miles 20mins later with no problems but I'm not sure it is reccommended to do that! If you run enough mileage consistently enough the body gets better at storing the glycogen, this is why you can log say 13 miles a day and do marathons with not that many 20+ long runs, compared to people doing 30 miles a week and loads of 20+mile runs

From missy on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 15:15:12 from 67.40.115.3

Haha...OMG Chris and Sam....I am a total Toast Junkie...I eat it like people scarf down doughnuts...My bread is low sugar but I am still thinking of taking it out...I'm too chubb for my race on the 20th..think I will switch out my toast for veggies.

From ChrisM on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 15:24:10 from 86.158.215.235

I seem to eat loads of Toast and I haven't a clue why, I dunno it must be my toaster's fault:

Oh thats cruel Chris very cruel LOL now I am going to raid the cupboard in hope that someone has eaten all the bread ha ha ha

Missy yeah I feel the chubb on me at the moment, I think it was from that easy week and eating gargantuan amounts of food from boredom of being stuck in the house as my son was ill too LOL

I was weighing less before that week than I do now even after 2 weeks of 60-70 miles huh :(

From missy on Mon, Mar 01, 2010 at 21:26:35 from 67.40.115.3

Omg I am dying laughing Chris..is that your toaster? Sam and I are drooling looking at that toast! ;P

Sam, I Have never had Nero Coffee..never heard of it until I met you..maybe they don't have it over here.

You are inspiring me with your 2 week no toast..I will heat no toast till after my race March 20..NO TOAST you hear me??? :D I said it so I Have to do it now.

I lost no weight for weeks I know because the TRI coach had my workouts too slow....I hope With it speeding up I can shed the squishy off...I hope your weight is just water..:P
