45 min Spin class - my butt is sore!  Spin is weird....I did not feel like I was working very hard but I was dripping sweat by the end so apparently I was.  Great low impact cross training!  The only problem is most days it starts at 5:15am and that is just a little too early for me.  The 5:45am class was perfect!

20 min weights

2 treadmill miles.  Felt really good to start and then Bam.....pain!  So I quit.

Charity 5k tonight to raise money for a girl from my hometown that was paralyzed from the neck down in a car accident.  I will be working on my pacing skills.....someone give me an exact time to shoot for?

Happy Columbus Day!  It's been a day of discovery alright!

  • I discovered that Spin is hard and hurts your butt!  Seriously wow.
  • I discovered that you should never start at the very back of a 5k with 200 people and half of them with strollers and dogs.
  • And most importantly I discovered that you should always listen to the course directions even if you think you will take last place.

I had zero intent of "racing" this race....heck I've literally been dragging my right leg around and not ran one sub-8 minute mile since TOU.  But my brain has issues and honestly running fast with this stupid injury feels better than jogging.  I started way in the back thinking there would be a bunch of HS kids and I would just run with my friend Alisha and hangout.  I truly felt like I was barely jogging but somehow after the first mile and swirving past about 100 little kids and strollers I was in the lead?  I felt good so just decided to run what felt like a comfortable hard effort.  I was in the lead so as runner instinct would have it I didn't want to lose it!  I promised myself that if I had any pain at all I would be smart and stop or slow down.  I did not know the course at all and kept running when I was supposed to turn adding an extra .1 mi according to garmin.  The cop had to chase me down and redirect me and somehow I was still in the lead?  Nephi people seriously need to get in better shape because the fact that I was winning a 5k running slower than marathon pace was just ridiculous!  Didn't look at my watch once and just ran by feel.  Jogged it in at the end because it finished on gravel.  7:05, 6:40, 6:08, 6:15

Moral of the story:  If your injured just run fast and it will solve the injury?  Just kidding I am not getting too excited and sitting here icing as we speak.  I think it just felt so dang good and smooth to run fast that I was able to shut out any sign of pain. Who knows running injuries are so weird!

First off, hi Rachelle.

Second, (and yes these must be numbered) my rear hurts more than anything with spin. I need to sit on a pillow or have a banana seat. Also, 5:45 is early too, but doable.....oh and that was third.

Fourth, what are you pacing? Do it as a tempo?

From Rachelle on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 09:51:58 from 159.212.71.69

Hi Tara! Spin was hard and I think I totally cheated with the resistance but it was my first class and JulieC told me it was okay to cheat. :)

About the 5k - I am quite honestly pretty injured and don't think it is in my best interest to run fast. So I figured I could turn myself into an unofficial pacer. I'm trying to hold myself accountable for not doing anything stupid and trying to run fast. I don't think I could run a 7 min mi if I was being chased by a bear so it shouldn't be a problem. :)

30 minutes tonight! I DARE YOU!!! :-) Then try to cut it down to 25 minutes on Saturday w/ Andrea.

From Andrea on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 10:13:34 from 72.37.171.52

You should take Izzy so then you can't run fast!

Does power walking hurt??

From Kira Bell on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 10:23:31 from 74.220.196.214

Get feeling better!

From Rachelle on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 10:27:12 from 159.212.71.69

Jake - I think I'll take my sister with me (she's due to have a baby Wednesday) and try to keep up with her. :)

Andrea - Everyone would leave if a brought Izzy. Power walking, cycling, elliptical, gymnastics, dancing, and the occasional hide and go seek chase with my nephew do not hurt. Walking downstairs (sometimes up) and running hurt. :(

From Andrea on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 10:34:26 from 72.37.171.52

She's due on Wednesday?! So exciting!

Well, that's actually good! You can do everything but run...so in a positive light, you will be able to completely recover from the pounding of training for so long but still be able to exercise and stay very fit via all those other forms of exercise :)

My recommendation for the race tonight is to do whatever it takes to have no pain...whether it be running, skipping, gymnastics, power walking, or having your sister practice her stroller skills on you :)

I was looking at average Marathon finish times in 2011 and it reaffirms how amazing you sub 3 runners are. Sub 3 women are in the top 0.05% of all female marathoners! That's incredible. I hope this helps you feel a little better as you rehab.

Andrea - yes exactly! And the x-training shinanagans is kind of fun....I guess. It has definitely made me realize how "easy" running is compared to other activities. I'll find my way to the finish line somehow tonight. I'm just excited to be a part of it. I can't even imagine going from being fully functioning teenager to completely paralyzed. So so sad.

Russ - Thanks! That did make me feel better. I think I forget or take for granted (because we have so many awesome elite runners on the blog) how big of an accomplishment sub-3 really is.

I still have 3-4 good REM cycles left at 5:15 am :)

From RachelT on Mon, Oct 08, 2012 at 20:37:44 from 24.10.224.129

I love that you won with no intention of racing and starting in the way back. That is such a great story, good job. Sorry about the injury, hope it feels better soon.

From Lulu Walls on Tue, Oct 09, 2012 at 12:10:31 from 155.100.217.146

Wow what a day! Are u coming to SLC this weekend for any of the Utah fittest fun?

From Rachelle on Tue, Oct 09, 2012 at 12:18:11 from 159.212.71.77

Aimee - I am hoping to come up this weekend. My sister is giving birth tomorrow and I am interim mother for a wild toddler until she gets out of the hospital (heaven help me). As soon as they release her I will be giving back my parenting rights and hopefully I can make it. :)
