6 mi easy on Murdock canal trail with Janae, no watch.  Yet another perfect November morning!  I really found this article interesting about Warming up for a race.  It sure puts my 10 min jog and chit chat with other runner friends routine to shame.  Definitely an area I could work on improving in 2014.

PM:  3 mi easy

"I have found that it is best to start a race feeling overly warmed up rather than not warm enough.  Although it may seem like a lot of pre-race work, the benefit of strides and dynamic drills will become evident in the first mile of the race when what once felt like a shock to the body becomes a comfortable pace relative to the explosive, fast-twitch dynamic drills and strides."

hee hee. Rachelle. I will stick to my chit chats and almost not making it to my spot before the gun goes off ; D. but I have higher hopes for you so you better work on that!! btw I was going to ask if you were running this way this morning...darn missed out on a group run.

Sweet article. I'm way to guilty of not warming up properly. My most recent 10k I finally jogged a mile before the race and did a few strides. That first mile is always a wicked shock to me. This'll be one of my running new year's resolutions.. :)

wow, that's a lot of work to do before a race. generally the shorter the race the more warm up I do but nothing even close to that. It would be interesting to try this for a 5k or 10k.

Thanks for sharing!! It sounds like a lot of work. I normally just jog before the race too. I don't want to look like the weirdo doing drills, but those weirdos are usually the ones that kick my booty big time, so they must know what they are doing! :)

Good link. A solid warmup is so important, esp for half-marathon and below. At bigger races I've traveled to this is very evident - the better runners do much more sophisticated warmup routines than my typical "20 minutes + strides".

I definitely agree that Sarah's routine is a bit extreme. But like Jake said a solid warmup is so important for shorter races. I think keying in on all of these "little things" can really add up and make a significant difference. I've never taken a warmup too serious which mostly comes back to the fact that I don't really know what I'm doing. I figure if I want to improve my times in 2014 it can't hurt to start focussing more on the little things.
