I have ran in some pretty crappy weather but I am almost certain that todays takes the cake.  It was pretty commical running into the 40mph wind and pelting snow.  We just closed our eyes, pumped our arms, and sprinted as fast as we could.:-)  I'm glad Jen & Melissa knocked on my door this morning and literally forced me out.  We just ended up doing a 2 mile out & back by my house x 3 and then I added one more by myself to make 8.5 miles, 7:42 pace.  It was quite the memorable adventure.

I just started reading The Extra Mile by Ultrarunner Pam Reed and wanted to share something I read last night about limits that really resonated with me.  "Most people who have been running for a while, even in a very casual way, mentally set a limit on how much they can do.  Placing limits on what I think I can accomplish is something I tend not to do.  I've heard that people are actually able to cover about twice their imagined limit:  You might not be able to cut your "best" time in half, but you can reduce it by a significant percentage.  That has been my experience.  While initially I never thought I would run the distances I have, or in the times in which I've done them, I haven't really put mental limitations on myself either.  And truly, I've surprsied myself."

Yeah, that weather you ran in this morning was HELLISH!!! Can't believe you actually ran for 8.5 miles in it!!!! Really appreciated your comments about the book "The Extra Mile"! It will now be the next book I read...THANKS!!!!

Pam Reed is a beast. On Ultrarunning.com's all-time list on American soil, she's #2 (1st American) at 6 days with 491 miles, #2 at 48 hours with 220 miles, and 10th over 24 hours with 139 miles. That kind of stuff is just mind-boggling to me. I'd have to tear down all kinds of self limitations first, the first being that for an ultra runner, I do surprising low mileage weekly because I just never have done more and don't think I can/should.

And great job getting it done today. I'm looking out my window at the northerly blowing horizontal snow, thinking I will do an east-west out and back. :-)

Scott - running in terrible weather is fun....just ask Jen Hughes...she spent the first 5 min of the run convincing me it would be fun! You better not wimp out on us next time.

Jen - Pam Reed is a freaking machine and the book is awesome and inspiring! You need to read it if you haven't. It actually made me think of you last night - you would love it.

Sounds like a brutal resistance training workout! Thanks for sharing the book quote. It's amazing what the body can do when you makeup your mind you can achieve a goal.

Jen is right- Running in the snow is fun, but the wind... Hmmm not so much. :) I need to check that book out, it sounds like a good read.

Great quote! Nice work in the weather this morning. I was out in it also. Absolutely brutal.

Wow! You were right about the crappy weather. I had no idea you were up against 40mph wind and snow! Way to run through it.

Thanks for sharing the quote, too. Makes you think. Makes you wonder.
