Personal:

I decided to join to hold myself accountable for my training and because I love learning from others running experiences.  I just started running a little over a year ago and have a lot to learn.  I work fulltime as a Manager of Telecommunications for Intermountain Healthcare and go to school online through Weber State University.  If you want to know more check out my blog: www.runningfortrevor.blogspot.com

Not even sure what to say about this workout.  Why are our bodies so weird sometimes?

Warmed up for 20ish minutes 8:34 pace and then went into the 400s.  I wanted to keep the recovery short so I stuck to about 200 meter recovery (or 90 seconds).  I felt pretty good and was rolling along when suddenly I had a SHARP pain on the outside of my left foot.  What the heck!  I slowed down to a jogging pace and realized I was compromising my form completely (running on my toes and inside of my foot) so I stopped.  I stretched out the foot a bit and started jogging again.  After about 8 minutes of jogging the pain went away so I decided to finish out the 400s this time with equal 400 recovery to make sure I wasn't stressing my body too much.

I am not real sure what to think of all this.  I feel like the foot pain may have been because of the impact of transitioning from fast to slow and I may have just landed funny.  I really don't know but hope it is just random.....

PM:  Got home late (yes 6:30 is late for me) but I had to test drive the foot.  2 miles easy.  It feels just a little funny but definitely not anything like the weird pain I experiences this morning.  I will keep it really easy tomorrow but I think I am in the clear.

I have had random pains hit me like that from time to time. They almost go away as fast as they show up. You probably just hit a nerve funny. Nice job sticking with it and getting the workout in.

I agree with Chad. That's what happens with hard marathon training! Just be aware if it happens again..

Glad you were able to get those 400s in!

I agree w/ what has been said above - its probably not a chronic injury, just a weird nerve thing. This is a rite of passage of hard marathon training... weird things happening! Just pay attention to it and make sure it feels normal on your shakeout later or tomorrow.

Good workout though - nice change of pace for the legs to get some faster running in... makes marathon pace feel easier :-) And way to stick with it, mentally, when it looked like the workout might be a wash.

Thanks so much for the feedback. You are making me feel much better. I was feeling like an idiot for finishing the workout but the pain really was completely random and went away after I jogged for a bit. I will definitely be careful these next couple of days.

Its a delicate balance b/w playing it super safe with these kinds of things, and taking some calculated risks and getting the work done.

I have taken my fair share of calculated risks so far this year, and I've been lucky... but the key is knowing when too much is too much. If the pain kept up, then it wouldn't have necessarily been smart to keep going, but since it went away, you might as well just run! I think you did the smart thing by increasing the rest a bit in between 400s

definitely so random!!! ; D. seriously--- I think it was from the sudden sprint after a nice warmup. your body was rolling along ever so nicely then--- your mind forgot to tell your body the newsflash--- SW AHEAD!! the same type of pain hit me when I was running in that blizzard last week in inches of snow and I had the notion (my body didn't know what the heck that notion was) to add in some 0.1 mile strides. On my 2nd stride my foot got this sudden sharp pain in it from landing oddly in the crisp and at times soft snow so quickly. Basically the TM is the same way-- some shoes and some belts on the TM cause imbalances and your body isn't always ready for them as when you run outside you can visually see them coming ahead of you to prepare but on the TM you can't. Glad the pain subsided : D.

Sounds like you played it safe and made the best of the situation! As long as it doesn't come back or bother you later take it in stride and keep on! Nice SW by the way.
