Personal:

I decided to join to hold myself accountable for my training and because I love learning from others running experiences.  I just started running a little over a year ago and have a lot to learn.  I work fulltime as a Manager of Telecommunications for Intermountain Healthcare and go to school online through Weber State University.  If you want to know more check out my blog: www.runningfortrevor.blogspot.com

60 min on the elliptical.  Much more tolerable today because I had my new People magazine to read and my ipod. :)  Sure is hard spinning around endlessly on that thing when the weather is perfect outside though...

Short walk with the Pup and 20 min weights at home.

The leg is not any better and I have a bad gut feeling that this is more than just a minor setback.  I have a really high pain tolerance and when jogging or walking downstairs the pain is pretty high!  It's really hard to know though and in some ways it just feels like something needs to be popped back into place and everything would be okay.  Either way the silver lining is that walking and cross training do not seem to iritate it.  Looking back at my training in 2012 this is only the 3rd day I have taken completely off of running so I really have no room to complain.  I also have no races coming up so a short break might actually be a good thing.  I am not saying any of this is good but I'm really trying to be optimitic and celebrate the fact that I've had a great year and some time off (granted it's nothing major) is okay and maybe even necessary.  I'm going to get a bike from my parents house this weekend so hopefully that will help with the cross training.

I also talked to Jorge and he agreed with Bonnie & Bam that I should not foam roll or try to work things out on my own.  Initially I thought the pain was all in the upper calf but now that it is more apparent in the lower outside of the knee I need to be smart and not make it worse.  Thanks for listenning to my ramblings! :)

Even if its more than a minor little setback, the timing couldn't be better. You've smashed your PRs across the board this year - gone from being a pretty good runner to absolute STAR. If you miss a little time now, ahhh... you'll be back strong, probably stronger.

Have you thought about seeing a dr. or pt? They could probably help! take care of yourself!!!

From Rachelle on Fri, Sep 21, 2012 at 11:00:14 from 199.190.170.28

Jake - loved the article! Now if only mentally I could actually do it... Running is like 99.9% mental for me. It is my drug! And I know that no one understands this better than you. :)

Carina - I'll give it at least 2 weeks before seeing a doc. I'm just a poor college student with a very high insurance deductible and I'd hate to ruin my "don't go to the dr in 2012 streak" with only 3 more months to go!

Wow. I'm so impressed with you Rachelle. Staying hopeful amongst injury (big or small) is not the easy thing to do... Way to be! I'm glad you see things with a clear perspective. You have been very fortunate and you're right.. a little rest doesn't kill anyone and you will be back up in no time give you FIRST take care of your body :) Which you seem to be doing.

Lagat is obviously in a world all by himself. But its interesting to see the different approaches. I couldn't do it (as you know), mainly b/c I just love running way too much... but its nice to have examples of people who take time off and come back strong year after year... so if we DO have to take a little downtime, we know we aren't going to lose anything in the big picture.

Is it behind the head of the fibula? Or just a touch below the head of the fibula?

From Rachelle on Fri, Sep 21, 2012 at 11:16:17 from 199.190.170.28

Yeah it really was a great read and proof that if someone like Lagat can take 5 full weeks off of running surely I'll live. If all else fails I'll just turn to my 2nd drug of choice...icecream! :)

Kira - You are the best! :) I'll probably be at the gym tomorrow morning so save me and elliptical near you!

From Rachelle on Fri, Sep 21, 2012 at 11:20:25 from 199.190.170.28

Bam - it seems to be just behind the head of the fibula.

From Bam on Fri, Sep 21, 2012 at 11:36:11 from 89.204.171.86

If you press your thumb on the head of the fibula and slide it down slowly, you'll feel a rod type thing that runs along the fibula. Stay up near the head of the fibula - no further than 1.5 inches and press with gentle firmness - excuse the oxymoron. Find the most tender point.

Now, bend your leg so that the gastroc. (the calf) is completly relaxed and press into the tender point. Keep the pressure constant. It should feel painful and tingle at first. This will ease. But keep the pressure on for 90 seconds. See how that feels.

I've gotta go do some AIS before my evening run, but I'll come back to you after my run - let me know how you get on. It might take a couple of goes. Don't worry you will not damage anything. Don't press too hard:)

Oh man, I'm so sorry. Injury sucks big time. I'm glad you have a healthy attitude about it (which is hard to do). You're right, you've trained so stinkin hard this year and you deserve to take it easy. When you're recovered, you'll bounce back so quickly.

running was my drug until i was injured-- so be careful and take the time off cause coming back too early makes running a chore and no longer a drug!! been there, still doing that!! you BETTER NOT run that marathon in October!! just sayin'

You work at a hospital and they still give you bad insurance? Geez..

If you sister doesn't have her kid before Halloween, I hope she does this for her costume - http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/251696_518270891532825_1130470154_n.jpg

Bam - thanks I'll try that but wow I must say I suck at this self massage thing. I need to find a physical therapist to date or something.

Natalie - Thanks! I'm feeling better after Cafe Rio and a slurpee for lunch. It's the little things in life! :)

Julie - It's borderline pathetic how addicted I am to running. I need a straight IV of slurpee if I'm going to get through this I think. And yeah I'm definitely getting out of pacing that full even if I'm not injured it just doesn't seem smart.

Andrea - I just sent that to my sister. :)
