I decided to join to hold myself accountable for my training and because I love learning from others running experiences.  I just started running a little over a year ago and have a lot to learn.  I work fulltime as a Manager of Telecommunications for Intermountain Healthcare and go to school online through Weber State University.  If you want to know more check out my blog: www.runningfortrevor.blogspot.com

I have officially decided (and now I'm officially making it public) that I am going to take the remainder of 2012 off of racing.  I had thought that maybe I would come back from TOU and try to improve my 5k/10k/HM times.  But I have since reassesed and realized that I will most likely benefit more from giving my body 2-3 months off (hobby jogging) and coming back strong and healthy in 2013.  2012 has been a GREAT year for me and I haven't really taken a break from training at all so it is time.  I've been nursing some small niggles (metetarsalgia, hamstring, & now right leg knee/calf) all Summer and it's time to give my body an extended break.  I think I have more potential as a runner but I also feel I'll have a difficult time tapping into it unless I take a break.  The timing is also ideal since I despise treadmills and hate running in the dark alone.  Maybe I'll get ambitious and learn how to do a pull-up or start those Independent study courses I'm enrolled in.....meh!

PM:  typical 2 with the pup.  Today we finished in 18:30 which is a 1:30 improvement on yesterdays time.  I have a whole in my last pair of Mirages. :(  I should really look into the whole barefoot thing because I am so hard on shoes!

Wow! This is the smartest talk I've heard from a runner on this blog yet :)

From AngieB on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 09:59:04 from 75.162.189.226

Sounds like a good plan! Breaks always make me more competitive too. I'm feeling as if I need a big break as well.

From Jake K on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 10:01:35 from 155.100.226.191

GREAT doesn't even do justice to the year you've had. There would have to be an option to make that font size 100 times bigger. You are the doing the smart thing - and this approach will give you the ability to make another jump next year.

I'm impressed that you have this perspective. Its shows how far you have come... and I'm really happy that you also realize you haven't come anywhere close to your ceiling yet.

(Plus, there's not really that many good races around here in the fall anyways)

From Rachelle on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 10:10:01 from 199.190.170.21

Thanks so much you guys! This is precisely why I'm making it public because otherwise I'd be tempted to change my mind.

Jake - I'll still run the traditional Turkey Trot 5k on Thanksgiving but this year I'm shooting for 2nd place because I really want a pumpkin pie. I still have the turkey from last year in my parents freezer and I don't think they have room for another one...

We'll bookmark this post and make sure you don't go back and delete it :-)

Turkey trots are always allowed!

From Rob on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 10:17:24 from 72.254.17.226

Good call, enjoy the holidays and come back well fueled.

I think that will be funny when you wait 10 feet from the finish line for the second place runner so you don't have to get another turkey.

From Rachelle on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 10:20:06 from 199.190.170.21

Yes please bookmark it! And turkey trots are only allowed if you dress like a turkey... I'll be spending the next 8 weeks crafting my feathers. :) This costume is going to be epic!

Rob - I'm pretty sure the turkey costume will slow me down enough for 2nd or 3rd place. :)

From JulieC on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 12:21:54 from 67.41.190.109

I will be there with a camera Rachelle!! and I am wondering if you and I should start going out to the movies and eating out to fill up our time with our vacation status?? : D

From Rachelle on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 12:26:02 from 199.190.170.21

Julie - yes please!! These past few days have actually been great with the laid back training. I've staying out until 10:30 pm shopping with my Mom & Sis, been eating crap, and not even caring what time I wake up in the am. I'm loving it!

From Carina on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 12:40:00 from 204.15.86.83

I think I need the break mentally just as much as physically after a tough training cycle. It was actually nice to run pregnant (until it got really hard) cause I was running just for the love of running.

From allie on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 13:16:57 from 161.38.218.168

i'm 100% behind this plan. a recovery period is crucial, physically and mentally. you'll be faster in 2013 because of it. burn out and injuries are so much more likely when you try to extend the post-marathon PR high by jumping back into training and racing too quickly. i'm glad you've recognized this without having to go through it the hard way (it took me about 10 tries and a whole bunch of miserable injuries).

shalane flanagan calls it the "fat and happy" period. i'm on that plan right now. :)

From RAD on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 13:24:36 from 98.202.23.178

Fat and Happy Running. Now that is a wagon I'm going to get on! :)

From Rachelle on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 14:24:57 from 67.199.182.207

Carina - yes I agree about the mental break. Running is habit and I will keep running but it is so nice to not be in "training" mode.

Allie - It's a great plan to be on. Now I just need to improve my baking skills. :)

RAD - I can't wait until SGM is over and you can all jump on my wagon. Do you want to jog that Utah fittest state HM with me? I'd LOVE a good excuse to chat with you for 2 hours. :)

From RAD on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 14:35:13 from 98.202.23.178

Oh, heck yes! I'm planning on just taking it nice and easy...that is probably all my body will allow me to do anyway :) I just have to be back to the start by 9AM for the 5K with the family. I think we can do a half in 2 hours? maybe? :)

From Lily on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 15:05:15 from 67.199.178.95

Hi :)

I'm no doctor, but I'm experienced for sure. This sounds a little like it band. Even if your calf is a bit involved. Look into it.

You're smart resting for 3 months. It's a good a. You're always welcome to run with me on my recovery days.

From NatalieK on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 15:35:05 from 24.2.101.184

Very smart indeed. Way to listen to your body, something that is hard for a lot of runners to do!

From Kira Bell on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 15:42:55 from 74.220.196.214

Smart move.

From Rachelle on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 20:02:23 from 76.8.202.193

Rachel - woo hoo I am so excited! I think if we use our best pacing skills we can pull off a precise 1:56 giving us 4 min to spare before the 5k. :)

Lily - You may be right about the IT band. I would definitely love to run with you. :):)

Natalie & Kira - Thanks girls. Now your jobs are holding me accountable. ;)

From RAD on Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 21:58:48 from 98.202.23.178

I say we get our REAL pacing skills out and do a 1:54:32.1 :) Now, that would be a rockin' time!! Pretty difficult to hit too, but I think we can do it - especially given our affinity with numbers!
