I must have bad luck with 10k's - this is the second one (of my 4 total) in which I've gone the wrong way or something! I think there were a total of 10 of us running the 10k, so the start was pretty small and I took off with no boys coming near, so I had goal #1 for the whole race! The race was a out-and-back, so when my garmin said 3.1 miles and there wasn't a turnaround, I was a bit confused, but when I eventually got to 4 miles with no turnaround in sight, I was so mad! I turned around and tried to think of where I could've messed up, but there wasn't any, so as I made my way back I told all the people running it what was up.

The first 2 miles were fast and fun, and the third had a lot of slow uphill. I was actually 'racing' for them, but I got more and more confused/angry on the fourth mile so it was slower (and still uphill). Miles 5-6 were faster with the downhill, and when I got to 6.2 miles total, I glanced at my watch at 6.2 and I think my time was around 41:00. So, whatever. After that, I slowed to a 'cruise' at around 7:15/mi pace for the last 2 miles back to the finish line for a total avg. of 6:46/mi. (DS2 211.8)

It turns out, talking to the race director after, that at some point we were supposed to go from the road to the paved trail and that the turnaround was on the trail. That would've been nice to know before the race. Or even during. Or if it had been marked. But no. I don't think I've been so tempted to flip someone off in all my life! I left right after I finished so I wouldn't freak out on anyone or get even angrier, and to make it to Pres. Hinckley's funeral on time. So I spent twenty bucks for a t-shirt, goody bag, and a 8 mile tempo run. Bleh.
I'm mostly over it by now, just a bit of frustration over a wasted morning.

That is so frustrating, but on the other hand you completely KICKED BUTT!! Way to GO!!

From Lybi on Sat, Feb 02, 2008 at 17:13:48

I bet there are a lot of people who are glad you ran today! Just think about how they would've just kept going and going...

Did you end up being 1st overall and beating the guys?

It IS really frustrating that you could have had a PR if the course had been marked correctly. I bet they would refund your money in exchange for the shirt if you asked them.

Anyways, great job and thanks for raising the average speed of the FRB girls. ;)

From The Beast on Sat, Feb 02, 2008 at 18:16:00

That really sucks! Good job on winning though.

From josse on Sat, Feb 02, 2008 at 18:36:26

Sorry about the race, it did make me laugh because I have dreams like that.

And good for you for resisting the finger;)

From amanda on Sat, Feb 02, 2008 at 18:41:04

To bad you couldn't find the turn around. Thanks for reading some ap biology to me. That was fun we need to do it again. Maybe next time I can finish the whole movie lol.

From Dave Holt on Sat, Feb 02, 2008 at 23:37:08

I think I might just HAVE to tell Mr. Palmer about this one!

From Christi on Sun, Feb 03, 2008 at 00:52:31

That is crazy! I didn't know the turn around was on a trail?! Its weird 'cause the trail dumps you on the road and nobody knew to look for a place to get back on a trail. ANYWAY- frustrating! It was really fun to chat & warm up with you pre-race and see you in action so close- you are an AMAZING runner!

From Ruthie on Sun, Feb 03, 2008 at 01:28:45

Thanks guys. :)

Lybi- Yes way!! (Though I'm not sure how much of an accomplishment it was since I don't think more than 10 people ran the 10k.)

Josse - I have them dreams like it too, though I think it is because I actually do go the wrong way in races. Often.

Holt- Oh no! THAT nickname he gave me has a problem with recurring after you tell him these stories...

From Steve O. on Sun, Feb 03, 2008 at 12:02:05

You seemed to have a good long 10K race. I'm pretty sure you could have won the race even if everyone else would have only had to run 6.2 miles. Great job. 1st place overall (male and female) right?

From Mik'L on Sun, Feb 03, 2008 at 20:28:31

LOL...not really! I cannot handle races that give out the wrong (or no) information about the course! Unbelievable! I have hardly seen Clyde so mad as when they turned him around wrong on that half in Nov. Way to run through it, still win, and keep your cool! Clyde had to leave right after his race in order to not jump down any throats as well! haha Lookin good though!

From Jeff Fre on Sun, Feb 03, 2008 at 23:38:17

I was worried at first when I saw your time, but great time for an 8miler. sorry about what happened but good job anyways!

From Kelly on Mon, Feb 04, 2008 at 09:17:51

Well done on the race and on controlling your temper. Chalk another victory up for you and the FRB crew!

From Mike Warren on Tue, Feb 05, 2008 at 10:39:20

Ruth, you are one Awesome runner! That stinks about the marking of the course. It's not that diffucult to mark a turnaround, I just don't get it. Well, not only a win for you, but the extra 2 miles will pay off down the road. Keep burning it up, I can still picture the back of your head, when you decided to shift gears at Painters and leave me for dead! "Great Job"!!
