This Sunday morning, I woke up early and jogged three-fourths of a mile over to Big Cottonwood Park where I met up with my friend Soren and we proceeded to knock out 11.1 miles at a relatively easy pace (i.e., two mile at marathon pace and a 7:08 minutes per mile average pace). For this workout, we ran up to 2000 East and over to Sugar House Park then took a lap around the inner loop of the park before heading back.  It was great practice on miles 4.5 to 8.5 of the Salt Lake Marathon course.  Also, we did complete ten miles in a time of 1:11:38.

In order to get in a stair workout, I followed this run up by jogging over to Granite High School and completed 55 repeats on the slushy-snow covered bleachers.  Hopefully by next weekend the snow will be cleared from the bleachers.  On the way back home, my legs just felt like, to use a coach Sloan term, mash potatoes.  Running stairs really exemplifies how weak my legs truly are.  I believe there is a stair climbing machine in the corner of my work’s gym; therefore, I’m going to dust it off and give it a try because as of right now, I’m in no shape to complete very many climbs for the Fight for Air Climb, my upcoming stair race at the end of February.

Finally, for my daily non-running workout, I was able to accomplish 300 sit-ups, 30 push-ups, a 90-second wall sit, and a 60-second plank on elbows and toes.

i like the idea of stair workouts. they are extremely tough which means they have to be extremely good for you.

i've heard about that stair climbing race but i have never done it. sounds like fun!

also, thank you for your insights about race times and sea level. i totally agree about the "home course advantage". i especially feel that way about the top of utah course -- i know that course inside and out after training on parts of the course nearly every day for four years. it definitely makes a difference.

Thanks Allie! In regards to the Fight for Air Climb stair race, I did not know what to expect when I ran it last year, but it far exceeded my expectations. It was blast and it's the short-track of running, that is, even though it's a time-trial type of start, it's a challenging and memorable experience trying to pass people running straight up in an enclosed stairwell. Also, it's a chipped timed race and you can run it was many times as you wish in a six-hour timeframe (however, I believe the chip only records your first trip to the top--I need to confirm this). Consequently, a brutal interval workout; that is, 23 floors and you take the elevator back down, thus basically a five minute climb followed by a five minute rest. By the way, the women's record is 30 climbs. :-) I totally recommend the Fight for Air Climb (I'm hoping my stair workouts will help me finally achieve two sub-7 miles up Little Mountain in late July); however, I'm completely bias since I'm volunteering for the American Lung Association in helping organize this race!

Oh yeah, I forgot you are an Aggie, thus you are absolutely a vet of the TOU course. Logan is absolutely a beautiful running area! I feel this same way about the D-News course which I know you know all too well (last July, I could recite all the names of the streets on Wasatch Dr). Have a great weekend!

ah yes, little mountain in late july...nothing better! i would also love to see some sub-7's on that section of the course...

as for the stair climb, you have totally convinced me to do it. it's sounds like a fun challenge and a great workout!
