Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Just a little fun, progressive TM run for my mini-taper this week before the marathon on Saturday #10 baby!!

Started at 8:34, then went faster every 3 songs 8:27, 8:20 (@ 2.75, I looked that time), 8:13 for the last 1/4 mile until hitting mile 4, then the last mile I did 7:53 with increasing speed to 7:30 the last 1/4 mile. Kept a consistent .5% incline, no more downhill cheating for me. I'm going to beat these hills yet.

TT: 41:50, AP:  8:22

Went to masters swim afterward - my teacher tried to kill me! I can't breathe on my left side, I can only breathe every other stroke on the R. I've tried bilateral breathing, but I drown myself. Seriously! Well, the last drill was to do a 150 and changing our breathing pattern every 50 - the first one breathe every 3 strokes, then 5, then 7. I tried explaining this would surely kill me, but with my teacher's confidence I tried it out. Annnnddd, I actually did it! I wouldn't say I'm proficient at bilateral breathing, but I did it and didn't die. THIS is progress! She did have me use paddles and float my legs so I was only concentrating on the stroke, but I'm just excited I did it!

We finished with another 200 time trial. Well, I beat my time from last week by 4 seconds. Not a huge leap, but progress! That is what we're looking for, and I'm still really enjoying swimming, so we'll  just keep carrying on.

Oh, as a side note - JT, my brother in law, is on his last week of taper before his VERY first marathon Saturday!! If you have any tips or words of encouragement, please share them with him. He is ready to take this one on and I've given all the advice I can :)

I am behind. Where are you running Saturday?

From flatlander on Mon, Nov 07, 2011 at 17:21:26 from 64.129.54.210

Good luck on #10, and #1 for your brother-in-law.

Devine, what the heck, I missed you are running a marathon? Which one, good luck to JT.

From Nancy on Mon, Nov 07, 2011 at 20:51:57 from 76.23.21.118

Good Luck. What marathon are you running? It sounds like your swim teacher is very good.

Why a mini-taper?

From Calvin on Mon, Nov 07, 2011 at 22:27:43 from 66.182.67.156

You're a Master Swimmer, that's awesome.

Nice progressive run, good start to your marathon week.

Lily, in a marathon :)

Flatlander, thanks! I love watching virgins knock out their first :)

Brent, I've always got on in my back pocket :)

Nancy, the swim teacher is good! It is a fun class. You should come out sometime. It is at the JL Sorenson Rec center.

Andrea, just enough to hit miles, but not tire out the legs!

Cal, ha! not as lucrative as it sounds. Anyone can be a masters swimmer. Just show up and do the workout. You don't even have to pay extra!!!

I can't keep up with you...literally. Way to go on marathon # 10.

Bilateral breathing may be a bit overated. A lot of coaches don't even teach it anymore. Before you stress out about learning it, you may want to read about it online. Dropping 4 second off the time of a 200 swim in just one week is GREAT. Just curious, were you doing bilateral breathing when you dropped your time?

"Lily, in a marathon :)"

You turkey. WHAT marathon?

From Lily on Tue, Nov 08, 2011 at 11:07:58 from 67.199.178.210

ahhhh yes :)

From RAD on Tue, Nov 08, 2011 at 16:55:17 from 98.202.23.178

bye-wing, No. I wasn't bilateral breathing on the timed one. I can't even do my flip turns when I'm being timed. My breathing doesn't allow me to, I feel like I'm going to drown! I'm so used to being able to breathe whenever I want while pushing cardio that when I'm trying to not breathe underwater I feel like my heart is going to explode and I'm going to drown if I don't get air NOW! So, I'm still working on flip turns on the timed swims :) I'll get there. Oh, if you think 4 seconds is good - 2 weeks ago I was at 4:01, then 3:45, now 3:41. There has to be a time I finally stop getting the progress, but for now. I'm happy :)

Carolyn, it's THE marathon! Number 10!!

From Carolyn in Colorado on Tue, Nov 08, 2011 at 17:01:20 from 198.241.174.15

You are no help at all!

Where is this marathon taking place?

From JulieC on Tue, Nov 08, 2011 at 17:08:02 from 70.56.110.103

RAD YOU ARE CRACKING ME UP....why are you so ELUSIVE about THE marathon you are running? hmmmm...which one is your brother-in-law running : D? also great job on the swimming. I love to swim. I have been a swimmer since my grandma taught me when I was three or four. I think learning when you are older must be pretty tricky. breathing...I mean how do you tell someone to relax about breathing while they are swimming...but YOU HAVE TO. I bet you will get there, try not to think about it too much. Unfortunately I have a swimmer's body-- broad shoulders-- BLUCK!! and NO hips. BLAH BLAH.

From RAD on Tue, Nov 08, 2011 at 17:11:53 from 98.202.23.178

Okay, shall we play 20 questions? :) The first clue is: it is taking place on the ROAD.

Julie, you are right. When I was doing the breathing exercises that is kind of what I keyed into. That I just have to relax more with the breathing. It's coming, but I'm just a land breather - always have been. I've been told I would be a good swimmer since I am tall and have broad shoulders, but I don't believe them when the short and seemingly nonathletic ladies can seriously KICK MY TRASH in the pool! I was only taught to do breathing on one side, so I feel very out of place trying to breathe on the left, but I'm getting there.

From Andrea on Tue, Nov 08, 2011 at 17:19:44 from 72.37.171.52

Julie - she probably just got some inspiration from your blog and made up her own 26.2 course to run on Saturday! :)

From RAD on Tue, Nov 08, 2011 at 17:30:07 from 98.202.23.178

Andrea wins! :)

I was going to ask you Rachel, if you were running the Lehcar Marathon. I am sure we could think of a great course for you : D. I would come out and support you, probably run it with you. : D. Eiluj marathon was the BoMb!! : D.
