I ran the Chicago Marathon. Average Heart Rate was 154 bpm which is 89% maximum heart rate. Marathon Pace Heart rate range is 79-88%. Thus I ran the race at above MP heart rate range. Excellent. This indicates I truly applied myself to running this Race.
Done at a 9:20 pace per mile. Pretty decent time given my Marathon PR is 4:03:42 for 9:18 pace per mile. 65 seconds off from my PR!!! And I doubt I ran my PR marathon at 154bpm. Heat may have factored into the elevated HR and diminished pace...but there was plenty of gatorade and water on the course. And I still had Gatorade in the Camel Bak at the race conclusion. I ran and conditions went from code green to yellow and conditions were at Red at the time of my finishing the Marathon. The winner of the race at the time of his winning saw the temp at 76 degrees I believe. I think I was running with temp in the 80s but am not sure.
So I am satisfied with this race result. But it would have been great if I actually PRd! Of course I ran more than the 26.2. My Garmin reported completing 26.2 but I still had about a third of a mile to go...Gamin reports my finishing the race in 4:00:44. It is not that the Garmin is inaccurate...it is simply I do not take the most direct route from start to finish (weaving, not cutting the corners as efficiently, water stops, etc). So next time I run a race, I will simply set the Garmin for a mile longer than the race distance so that I can get an accurate read on the finishing time by starting the watch at the start line and stopping the watch at the finish line. If anyone out there ran Chicago, let me know what you thought of the race.
