Endure and persist; this pain will turn to your good. - Ovid

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. - Romans 5:1-5

Drove out northeast of town and ran the "Bacon Strip" loop, which is an undulating 10-mile route on a wide, dirt county road. The dirt road with the tire tracks kind of looks like a strip of bacon, I guess. Anyway, it's supposedly a staple in the training regimes of Fort Collins marathoners, and if you can do it twice in a row you're ready for a marathon, or so they say. I have no need for silly things like marathons, so I just did it once.

It was a great workout route, simply non-stop rolling hills, all on soft dirt. No traffic at all, I think I saw one car during the 10 miles, plus had good views of the front range, and nice prairie scenery. First half is a net uphill, plus with a slight headwind, but then the back half was that much faster as a result. You can really roll on this route, despite the hills, I'll definitely do it regularly.

Ended up running 59:50 for the 10 miles, so 5:59/mile. Good workout.

that sounds like a great run!

Remember running up Franklin Basin road Saturday mornings, smelling all the bacon the campers were cooking? My Tuesday night trail run group discusses bacon all the time, too. Mmm, bacon.

So I know you're going to give some misleading, sarcastic answer... but are you really done with marathons forever? Just remember, I broke up with marathons in 2009 and have been clean since, so such things are entirely possible.

Unfortunately, no bacon scent on the Bacon Strip. Regarding marathons, I'm pretty sure I'll do one next year, and will probably do quite a few more over my lifetime. What is yet to be determined, is how much training and mental energy I'll put into it. At this point, I can run 2:22-2:23 off of 60 miles/week, or I can run maybe 2:18-2:19 off of 100-120 mpw. Not sure if 4-5 minutes is worth doubling my mileage and time investment. Maybe it will be later on, but for now it's certainly not. My main goal is to find ways to keep running fun and interesting, without a big commitment.

By the way, check out my September race, the Lead King Loop. It actually looks more like a Jon Allen-style race.

Oh, one other thing, "breaking" from marathons in favor or 50Ks, 50-milers, and 100-milers is hardly "clean". Quite the opposite. It's like saying, "Hey, I finally quit smoking! And I discovered this wonderful thing called 'heroin' too!"

hahaha I'm cracking up at that last comment Paul. Marathons seem a lot more "sane" than going out and running for 20+ straight hours! :-) I mean, I love running as much as anyone, but I've been doing 2 hour long runs the past couple weekends, and that feel like just about the perfect amount of time.

I felt pretty fulfilled by my 10-mile long run on Saturday...

That's a pretty cool looking race. And nice call on the quitting smoking comparison. Except ultras are more enjoyable. Kind of.

lol. That was choice!
