I had my closest encounter with a coyote this morning.  Well it wasn't really an encounter because we didn't speak to each other or attack each other.  We just gave each other the evil eye as if to say "Stay out of my open space!"  Usually I see coyotes off in the distance prancing away.  Or they just sit and stare at me as I run by and if I clap or yell they run off.  Once I saw a few of them barking at me from about 100 meters away and I avoided them, assuming they were protecting young or fresh meat.  Today I didn't even see this coyote as I approached but then as I passed him he ran across the trail just 10-15 feet behind me and then stopped to stare at me.   It kinda startled me but he looked more threatened then I was.  I've often review in my head what I would do if a coyote were to approach me.  I'd probably just wind up and kick it as hard as I could in the face and then bolt away as fast as possible.  I highly doubt it will ever happen though because I've seen over 30 coyotes in the 4 years that I've lived here in CO and not once have they approached me.  They are always shorter than waist height to me and obviously don't think they could take me.  They're right.  They couldn't.

Great attitude. You can take on those coyotes.

I see them occasionally but they pretty well stay away. I saw a raccoon the other day. And I see foxes every once in a while. We have a lot of wildlife around here.

oh no! a coyote post. don't let burt see this one!

i think your plan of attack is a good one. but always bring your brass knuckles along just in case.

coyotes can be unpredictable. but the ones to really watch out for are the coyotes.

In a neutral field, my money would be on you.

Too late allie! Nan, you didn't pronounce it right. Listen to how allie said it. That's the correct pronunciation. Coyote, not coyote.

My money is on you Nan but yeah dont forget the spray or the brass knuckles lol

I think we are fine with coyotes etc as long as we arent injured or bleeding !

Burt and Allie. Are you saying I should pronouce it K-I-O-TEE and not COY-O-TEE? How did you know I was pronouncing it wrong? Did you bug my brain?

From allie on Tue, Oct 20, 2009 at 18:32:43 from 129.123.243.107

this is why i was worried about burt seeing this. the correct pronunciation is coyote. unless you are from colorado, then it's coyote.

It's hopeless, allie. She just doesn't get it.

From Nan Kennard on Tue, Oct 20, 2009 at 18:49:08 from 174.51.250.151

I'm starting to wonder if there is actually anything to "get."

OHHH now I get it. Of course I pronounce it coyote, not coyote. After all, I did grow up in Utah, remember. And us Utahns pronounce and spell EVERYTHING correctly.

Well, I'm gettn' tired so I think I'll go lay down on my pellow and warm up on this freezn' night. Then I'll go call my friend from Laytn' and see how the weathers treatn' them out there.
