Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

When I woke up today I had to pee, which is nothing new, but it hurt to hold it, which is bad when you are hooked up to equipment in a hospital bed.  Called for help and am now fine.

Hurts to move around in bed, to stand up straight, put on socks, walk.  Doesn't really hurt to lie here and do nothing.  Feels like a really sore muscle, like my legs after my first St G x two.

Tried to read and watch Arrested Development yesterday (laughing hurts) but kept falling asleep.  They say the anesthesia doesn't totally wear off for a while.

I could taste the anesthesia for almost two weeks, but I was out for almost 3 hours my last surgery - I had a laparoscopic surgery for my gallbladder that only took about 45 mins and with that one I felt fairly "normal" in a few days. Surgery sucks, that is for sure.

When do you get to go home?

Get well soon! Perhaps you can still run Houston and jog me to a 3:10 or 3:15... :)

WOW Michelle... I just caught up on your blog. Who knew this would happen? Crazy. . . I'm so glad you went to the hospital and didn't try to wait it out. Thanks for all the details, I love that you share so much! Wishing you a really speedy recovery from surgery. . . I bet you come back even stronger and faster, and yes I agree, you'll run faster without that dang appendix!

Michelle, just saw this, I have been wrapped up in my own dramas for the last week. So sorry for you, hope you are feeling better now. What a saga. Really disappointed that it looks like you won't be coming to Houston but I certainly understand the training issues. Get well soon.

I did like the part about you driving yourself to the hospital with appendicitis. You rock!

From runningafterbabies on Mon, Nov 15, 2010 at 22:29:24 from 24.10.211.135

Wow. Your report from Wed was unbelievable. I am so sorry you had this unexpected hiccup. Keep up the P+ATTITUDE. You are awesome and will recover so quickly. Who needs an appendix anyways?
