Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Walked .5 then stretched.

New easy pace doesn't feel easy to me.  it is 7:18-7:48.  Tried to keep on the slower end of this range.   It felt like the good old days, when I was in better shape and ticking the miles by, but I did have to watch my watch to make sure I didn't slow into a more comfortable pace.  Ran 9 miles total at 7:43 ave pace.

Hard tempo tomorrow.

Good job, I'm glad you got to sleep in! I'm scared for tomorrow! AHHHH

My idea for tomorrow is for us to do 2.5 miles out and back. So you can do 2 miles of it, then rest, then we'll pick you up for the last 2 miles. So you aren't doing a 5 mile tempo. You are doing 2x2 miles. Does that sound better?

Michelle, I could be wrong -- but easy pace is easy pace ... you shouldn't be too concerned about going "too" slow. It matters for the workouts, but let your body dictate the other paces (easy, long, etc). Especially since you are easy your back into regular workouts again. Relax and enjoy the ride ...

Good workout today, btw! (and I can't believe you did not even see my new 10K pr!)

Hey bonnie, does your race from Sunday indicate a faster easy run range? And does that range from the McMillan calculator seem too fast for you? Mine seems rather speedy for me. Where's the slow recovery run pace??

From Bonnie on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 at 20:37:02 from 64.119.33.134

Hi Michelle, no, my new PR is basically the 10k time that was predicted off of my 1/2 last year (but, as you know, the calculator only predicts what you can do if properly trained for the distance ;-)). Anyway. My "easy" pace range seem fast to me, and Dean said that his seem fast to him as well. To tell you the truth, I don't even bother with looking up my paces for easy/recovery days, I just run as slowly as I can -- like don't even use your Garmin chicky -- I run easy, I enjoy my run and save the "watch looking" for when it matters - at races or at the track!

Bonnie's advice sounds so familiar :)
