Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Race went much better than I thought.  I thought that I would love to keep 6:00 pace, but that I was in shape for 6:15.  Well, either the course was short or I was sub 6:00 for the whole race.  It was probably a true course, it was marked at mile markers, and the race directors corrected the 1/2 to make it true.

My goals were to go even pace and to vomit or dry heave at the end (then I know I gave it all).

1 - 6:00 (by marker) Went out with Tyler.  I was the first lady from the start.  Goal was 6:15-6:20, when I got my split I knew my work was cut out for me on the even pace front

2 -  5:52 (by marker) at turn around I was still first, but the second place girl was right behind.  I surged at 1.75 and dropped Tyler but the #2 girl was right behind me, I could hear her, and she passed me about at the 2 mile mark

3 - 5:59 (by my watch-didn't see 3 mile marker), try to not let her gap too much, but she's running strong and the race is getting hard.  At .5 miles to go, I surge and try to close the gap, but she has the audacity to run strong too

.1 25 sec, the #1 girl peels off, she's a bandit, so I get 1st place by default.  I see the clock at 18:14 as I cross, ended up 18:15 official time.

I was so happy when I finished, so happy with my time.  I almost dry heaved, felt it coming on but the urge wasn't strong enough, so I bet I could have pushed the last mile harder.  I do feel like I could have run it stronger, but I am thrilled with the time because I was just hoping to break 19:00 and this means I don't have as much ground to make up to get back to where I was.

After the race, cheered in KellieS, then ran the 1/2 marathon backwards.  Saw some strong men, AmberG in #2 (but she passed that lady!), and ran MacK in.

The event was very well organized, and well done.  Kudos to Hooper for his involvement.  I won a $50 GC to his running store (St George Running Center) for the win.

AWESOME!!! Guess who's back!! Michelle's in the house and she is STRONG! Sweetness-congrats on a jaw-dropping comeback--this is your year!

From Nan Kennard on Sat, Jan 23, 2010 at 14:24:44 from 174.51.250.151

WOW! That is a sweet race! Great job on such a strong comeback. I don't think you have to puke to prove you did your best. I've only puked one time after a race and it was not a PR, the puke was only because I ate too close to the race start.

From Jon on Sat, Jan 23, 2010 at 14:54:41 from 75.169.153.253

Nice job on the win, Michelle.

Woo stinkin' hoo! I was going to tell you before the race to come home victorious or don't come home at all. I didn't because you're coming back from an injury and I've razzed you enough in the past, but if I could go back in time...

It was so fun to meet up with you and warm up, and then to see you at right before mile 11 was awesome, thanks for your encouragement to 'go get her'! You helped me a ton. ALSO, THANKS for getting my gloves, , I've felt bad all day that you stuck around to find me, you could have just chucked them in the trash they were $1, but thank you anyway, I'm glad I got to see you and hear about your win! Hey all, thanks so much for your support and comments. This community has made such a big impact on my training since I joined.

Nan - I concede, puking is not necessary, but I do think I could have shaved another 5-10 sec off, a haunting feeling after a race.

Burt - thanks for holding back. I know it's hard.

Jody - right back attacha.

Marion - SUPERSTAR!

Craig - dang, I didn't recognize you, shows you what damage a year out of racing does, I forget faces. I warmed up with AmberG and didn't recognize her at the end of the race. Maybe my mind is going. . .

MacK - love ya!

Amber - dang you mean I could have kept those sweet gloves???

Luz - you don't know what a bandit is? A girl didn't register. I assume she started racing with the rest of us. She passed me at 2 mile mark or so, and she finished ahead of me, by perhaps 8 seconds, but she pulled off to the side. She didn't pay for the race and didn't have a chip. It's her loss, since she then didn't get the first place prize. I made that mistake when I won the first ever rex lee run but was a bandit and lost out on the fame/prize.

From LuzyLew on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 at 19:30:48 from 208.187.197.42

I had no idea you could 'steal' or sneak into a race. I guess I have no mind for rule breaking when it comes to running. Maybe she made you run a little harder than you would have. It seems weird that the 'badit' would be in first place-- I could see someone running with a pal to keep them company, but being so close to winning? If I ran that fast, I'd be in every race I could just to see what I could win!

From marion on Fri, Jan 29, 2010 at 21:10:02 from 71.213.120.94

Bandit = carrot!
