Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Ran with Jamie and the Sojourners, though the Sojourners were a quite small group today.  I warmed up alone for a mile so that I didn't have to do my 10:30 first mile in a group.  The warm up was a little better than the last couple of days.  We started at the mouth of the Provo Canyon and went toward the temple.  Jamie and I separated at around 6 miles for me, and I was on my own after that.  I felt pretty good until about mile 9 then I started to suck wind pretty badly.  Can I be unadjusted to altitude after being at sea level for just a week?  I felt like a weakling.  About the same time it got harder for me to breathe it started to snow annoying little snow flakes, and my heavy winter clothes felt claustrophobic and I was sliding on the river trail in places and I thought, geez, I think I prefer Hawaii. . .

Oh well, I will adjust back to reality.

Welcome Back Michelle! You can think of Hawaii during the painful parts of Painter's ... I am very glad you had a nice time!

Hello did you not just take a red eye flight and not get alot of sleep! I bet you just have a little jet lag, after flying I always feel crappy running for a couple days. BTW I thought it was so great you got out running on your layover, that is TRUE dedication!

I am getting excited to meet you, have you ever thought about relocating to SG so I could train with you? :) :)

Thanks for the welcomes back. Kind of funny because I never was really gone in the virtual blog world sense.

Marcie - I did get about 5 hours of flight sleep between flights one and two, really low quality stuff. Then I had a hard time sleeping well last night because my cat kept meowing (he is limping and I think in pain, I will probably take him into the vet on Tuesday, a new experience for this novice pet owner). So what are your thoughts for Painters'? Teams are stronger when they run in a pack. I would think that perhaps you, Ruth and I would likely naturally be in the same pace for the first miles at least. I would love for you to race with me and give me a run for the money the whole way (not that there is money on the line, is there?). I think you have more in you than you know. As my tempo on Thursday shows, I will need to warm up well before the race (probably more than normal, probably 3 miles slow), and the first couple of miles I will likely be warming up to the race pace. I am not sure if that works for you. I think I will be trying to target 6:25 pace, though I will be running quite a bit by feel.

Ave pace 6:25 would get us very close to breaking 1:24. The past female winning times are:

07 - 1:24:27

06 - 1:29:27

05 - 1:26:44

04 - 1:25:27

03 - 1:23:47

02 - 1:25:01

01 - 1:27:59

00 - 1:21:43

99 - 1:20:48

We have a good shot at going 1-2-3. Don't be surprised if Josse gets all excited and decides to race it too (don't do it Josse!)

I would love to try to hang with you, I do much better when I am with some one. But I dont know if I will be able to pull off that pace but I will for sure give it my all.So lets definetely start out together! There is a girl named Erica Schramm and if she is running she could very well give all of us a run for our money. I would be so thrilled if you took 1st!!!!!

From Ruthie on Sun, Jan 13, 2008 at 01:23:59

Well, if I am up to it, I'd love to run with you guys! Actually, I know that I am NOT up to it, but I still want to run with you guys. If I'm going to do the Half with as little training as I've been getting of late, I might as well commit total suicide and go for a good time or something...! And if I die in the middle (which is the most probable outcome of this madness), it can be a guts or nothing fight to the death with my own dumb self! Ooh yeah!.... so I think I've lost my mind.

Anyway, you guys can definitely win this thing - last year I got 2nd and I wasn't as fast as you gals are. (Last year many fast people from up north stayed up there because of the bad weather, so basically, I just got lucky) :) So, then we can sabotage Erica Schramm and sweep it! Or at least you two can have first and second. And I can say "I know them, they're so fast! And cool! They let me run with them for a while, and I died!"
