Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Bad sleep. I dreamt I got to meet Green Day then went to one of their homes (they lived with their mom) and I proceeded to lecture the poor fellow on how he wasn't living his life well.

 

For the race I was hoping to break 1:20 but the gold goal was to hit 6:00/mile ave pace (1:18:41 or so).  I did it and got first place too! 

Woke up at 4:10am, ate two pieces of whole wheat bread, picked up the babysitter, and took off with Paul to Provo. There were a ton of buses at the Riverwoods. We got in a line and got on the first bus that filled up, but it turns out we cheated because there was a long line of people in the other direction trying to get on. Sorry.

At the top James was doing his best to get the buses to turn around in an orderly manner. Our bus hit a sign on a tight curve at the turn around point. I left my bag at the start and helped James with the buses for a few minutes, then ran downhill to the park with restrooms. It was about 1.5 miles before I got there, so I took it nice and easy back up the mountain to the start. Stretched and chatted with bloggers. I didn't recognize Dave Holt with his buzz, nor Steve C, who I mistook for Adam, who I haven't seen in forever. I am full of faux pas. I met Kristen (used to be Barnes) from my BYU college days and we chatted for a while. I also met a couple of Sojourners. I had enough time for all the prerace business so it was perfect from that stance.

On to the race: My GPS watch misbehaved the whole time so I had to make complicated calculations in my head and I don't remember all of my splits. I'll break it down the best I can for posterity:

Miles 1-4, steepest downhill, 5:40's or so, the male bloggers dominate the front packs and I wish I could stay with them, they had such a nice pack, but I knew I should be 10-20 secs behind them so I keep my distance, Craig blows by me at mile 1 or 2 and I let him go because I don't want to blow out my legs on the downhill. I hope to get him later but he was always just ahead.

Mile 5 6:01 (per mile marker)- starts downhill then a gradual uphill as we hit the highway. I just try to reel in Red shirt while on the highway

Mile 6 6:06 - more uphill on highway then start to hit some more downhill, I get right up on red shirt but he doesn't like it so won't let me pass

Mile 7 5:45 or so - we have a water stop so I take a gu, red shirt puts some distance on me, I nearly choke on my water, and my shoe lace unties, I try to run with it untied and ended up never stopping to tie it (but I have a blister as thanks for that).

Mile 8 5:50 something like that, trying to get into a manageable rhythm for the rest of the race

Mile 9 6:26 perhaps the mile marker was off for the 9th mile, or I slowed down. I tried not to panic with such a slow time for this mile, I gave up alot of the cushion I wanted for the last three miles, I tell myself to run the next mile faster

Mile 10 6:00 (all miles are per mile markers) a much stronger mile, I switch my watch to total race time and tell myself to push hard to see if I can be under 66 minutes at mile 11.

Mile 11 65:38, this is a flat mile, feeling in the groove, I know I can hit six minute average pace for the race if I stay strong for the last two miles, trying for a 6:10 for mile 12

Mile 12-13 have no idea on splits for these, I tried to stay tough but there was no mile 12 marker and I was in no mans land, red shirt was way ahead, noone behind, I try to pick it up in mile 13 but feel the need to go to the bathroom so I back off.

Last .1, lots of cheering for #1 lady and I give a little kick and I try to smile, and I raise my hands for the finish, but there's no ribbon so its pretty dorky to do that really. The clock at the end was a minute off and I stop my watch a little late (too busy raising my hands) at 1:18:42, so my time was likely 1:18:40 or so.

Yeah! I won and I got the time predicted from the Deseret News 10K! I think this course was faster than last years because of the course change, so it is likely only 2 minutes slower than Hobble Creek instead of the 4 minutes the race predictor "predicts". 

I met several people after the race.  Hopefully they'll join the blog (if you are reading this, join the blog already!).

FRB/St. GRC had an awesome showing today.  I hope it caught the attention of some media and we'll get a newspaper article out of this race. 

On an embarrassing note, I took an "ice bath" with my new thermometer and it only registered 61 degrees, way too tepid to be much of use.  I have been putting in more ice, and I accidentally put too much water in, but I will continue to monitor my ice bath temperature, and try to drop it down to an acceptable range (I also need to research ideal range for it, though I am sure its not in the 60's). 

weight 122 - I thought I would be below 120 by this time of year, but I am meeting my racing targets without a lower weight, so perhaps this is my ideal running weight?  I still have some junk in my trunk but perhaps I always will.

Way to go Michelle! Next time just set your goal a couple minutes faster and you'll hit that RIGHT ON too! You looked very strong finishing. I'm not sure if I would say the course was faster than last year (maybe because of the start up higher - but the highway mileage seemed much harder than the Bridal Veil hill, and the bottom section being longer was a harder than last years), but that is just by Daveyboy Science!

The Lion queen roars again. PR? 1,000 commando points for the win and another 500 for the PR. You have something every runner wants, the magic it factor, you have something deep down clicks in on race day. I wish I could have been there today, love that race.

Dave - you know what? I come away from this race feeling that way, like I could have shaved off another minute if I had tried harder or if there was a female challenging me. I don't feel like I raced the same way Adam did. Oh well. We can always second guess.

Josse - where's the pictures babe?

Jon - you'd have to break and ankle or something for me to chick you. I wish I could keep up with you guys since you're so solid, but all of you guys in the 2:40 range last year are now knocking on 2:30 so I'm still solidly behind.

Congratulations Michelle, excellent race and well won. You need a bigger challenge. I have a habit just before race start of checking my shoe laces to make sure they are double knotted and tucked in. I always have this vision of them coming undone, I trip up and land on my snout to the amusement of a cheering public. Just reading about your laces coming undone at mile 7 breaks me out in a cold sweat.

I read an article in the BYU alumni magazine about Kristin Anderson (sp?)..she nearly qualified for the Olympics in steeplechase. She said the same thing in the article that you say about this race..after every race she always felt like there was more in her ...we are all excited for you to reach that potential...good job girl.

The Provo River Trail Half Marathon takes participants on a beautiful run DOWN South Fork Canyon along a paved river trail that follows the Provo River. The DOWNHILL point-to-point course starts at Big Springs Park and features spectacular views of Mt. Timpanogos and the famous Bridal Veil Falls.

Again another downhill race?

It must count for something that out of 1156 female finishers, I won by almost 2 minutes http://www.raceutah.com/scripts/show_results.php3 This race is perfect training for a downhill marathon like St. G. When I am not training for a downhill marathon, I will not focus on downhill training. But it makes sense to train on the terrain of a target race. 1/2 marathons are perfect workouts for a marathon. This race doesn't count for a 1:18:40 flat 1/2 marathon, but no one said it did. We can plug it into the race predictor to get some equivalents. It's a blessing to live in high altitude for my training, but one negative is that the major marathons are downhill in my state, and thus many of my target preparatory races will also be downhill while I still race the downhill marathons around here. I will be traveling out of state for at least one flat sea level marathon a year for the next several years, so I will gradually lose more of the downhill races.

Reguarding Katies comment, YES it does count. Every other runner was running the same DOWNhill course, so they had every advantage that you had. Also I plugged in your time from Provo into the race time predictor and for a flat SLC course it would put you at 1:20 which is still a PR for you. I think you are training very well to prepare for SG!

Katie, Yes downhill races count. Yes the times are not directly comparable to a flat race. We are at elevation here and though the downhill is more of an advantage than the disadvantage of the elevation we are running against other runners and comparing to their times. If you beat a person on a downhill course that has run 2:45 on the flat it is fair to say that even if the 1:18 on the downhill is closer to a 1:22 or even a 1:25 on the flat that you are in shape to run a 2:45. These races are good confidence builders they are not to say that my downhill time is equal to a flat sea-level time. I mark each of my downhill PRs as aided. They are not world record eligible courses but they are aided-PR courses and since running is a mental game it does help to have a 1:18 in the back of your mind the next time you are gunning for a 2:45 on the flat... Running downhill is not the same as doping or using drugs. It is a legitimate way to get in a fast time and teach your legs to handle speeds that they wouldn’t otherwise see. World class runners routinely do workouts downhill to teach their legs speed. You can find this very frequently in the workout plans of numerous top marathoners. These races are workouts to build towards a goal race.

The ever-so-fun downhill race debate. Unfortunately, we don't have much choice here in Utah. If you want to race competitively in-state, you WILL be running downhill races. I can count on one hand the number of non-downhill half marathons and full marathons (combined!). I had never experienced downhill races until I moved here, and I'm still not sure if their abundance is to combat the elevation, show off the natural beauty of the canyons, or just plain cheat. In any case, the only marathon in the state that meets standards for 2012 Trials qualifying is Park City...and the entire race is over 6000' elevation. Rather discouraging. I can definitely see both sides of the coin. However, note that most sea-level dwellers who come here to race comment on how the downhill courses are NOT necessarily easier; rather, some of them can be deceptively hard (with the exception of St. Geo, which is closer to playing a video game than to running. I'm still looking for the Wii version to come out)

Sasha - are you sure? It was certified back in 2005, when I ran it. I remember looking at the certification scan map on usatf.org, since that was the best map they had at the time!

Ah, more debate.

Coming from Colorado, I am used to some downhill races though most of the high profile races and marathons there are loop or not in the mountains (i.e. flat). Downhill is faster if you train for it, but I think most of the races here are downhill in Utah because it is fun to run in beautiful canyons. Fast is just a secondary benefit (except at the Alta Peruvian).

Paul - The race course was changed in 2006, and again in 2007. I remember the race director confessing the lack of certification in 2006.

She won and should be VERY proud of herself. I am sure we will see this same debate when she runs a 1:15 or less at Hobble. No pressure Michelle:)

VERY Good race. Yes it counts!!!!! 1766 other racers were trying to beat you, only 14 did. Same course, same day, same conditions. I'm with Josse, you should be VERY proud of yourself!

Random question: I see that you monitor your weight... I am always trying to loose ~10 pounds, but I can't even loose 1. Do have any good advice for trying to drop a little body fat?

Megan - question number one. Do you really need to lose that pound? If you eat to the best of your knowledge, and train to the best of your knowledge, your weight is probably already where it should be. If not, start doing it. Your weight may actually stay the same or even increase, but you will run faster.

Megan - Sasha is right. Eat right and train right and you should reach a proper equilibrium. I find that just telling myself that I'll have the bad treat I want eventually, but I don't have to have it every time I want it, helps. I'm not a saint at eating like Sasha is, but I just try to get better and better over time. Probably like mileage. It's better to take baby steps so you don't get injured (mileage) or binge (eating).

Megan, The other thing you'll notice is that as you run more mileage your body will start to reject "junk" food. That's not to say I don't enjoy a bowl of icecream (almost every night) but if I try and eat McDonalds I'm sick the next day and just want to avoid it all together... Your training will help dictate what you want to eat.
