Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

I ran the Payson race as a workout, a lazy way to get in some speed this week before the SF half.  The forecast was for rain.   I dropped off my salad at Marion's (she was having us all over for breakfast after the race) and I ran from her house to the start, got Paul and my packets, then did some more warm up.  It was sprinkly at times and dry at times.  I ran back to Marion's to find Paul, then ran with him back to the race, then waited in the bathroom line, stretching as I waited.  I ran to the start with Paul and did three strides.  I had put on my red racers so that means I have to run fast!  TylerS and KellieS showed, so when the gun went off Tyler and I stuck together for a while.

1 & 2 - I didn't see the first mile, but the total through the 2nd mile marker was 11:45, Tyler and I worked together and closed the gap on the front pack of four guys, who looked like they were on an easy run.  As I closed the gap to actually join them for a while I razzed them about being chatty and not racing.  They said they were tempoing, but I know their pace was slower than Seth's marathon pace, so it must have been a tinman tempo :)  I guess me talking smack wasn't the smartest thing to do, if I was all nice perhaps I could have stayed with them longer.

3 - 6:08 - third mile had a water stop at 2.5, where the water was weak gatorade.  I took in one swallow and my body absolutely rejected it, not more than a drop or two actually swallowed :(, the lead pack pulls away from me, but I'm putting forth good effort and try to get white shirt, a guy who's wearing an XXL tshirt but is skinny and is the first guy to drop from the lead pack.

4 - 6:23 - a very nonglorious split, but it is what it is.  I tried to tell myself to turn over but it seems I have a hard time keeping under 6:10 for long periods of time.  I need to work on it.  Course manager says that an ideal 4th mile would have been 6:06

5 - 6:24 - also nonglorious, but I guess this mile is just over .5% grade up so that's got to count for something, eh?  I catch white shirt somewhere around the 4 mile mark and try to go for green shirt (Bill Cobler?).  I can't gain on him much.  Right before the 5 mile mark are train tracks and the lights go of before I hit them, I zoom across and wonder if Tyler (behind me) makes it across.  I peak behind and I think I see his bandana made it.

6 - 6:11, I think the first half of this mile was slower than the second half, I was telling myself that I could run a 3:00 for the second half of this mile, and if the first half was a 3:10 then I pretty much did it.

.24 - 1:10, a kick at the end

38:04 - Dang it! Two seconds slower than Provo Freedom Festival 10K.  Oh well, I am running on tired legs and this really was supposed to be mainly a workout (though if I am at a race I race the best I can).  I ran this race last year in 42:14, holding nothing back last year (but also untapered and tired), so there is significant improvement at least.  Pure extrapolation brings me to 2:43:17 at St. G, though my improvement curve in Sept last year was likely better than it is right now.

Cooled down 2 miles, waited for the awards (I got a silver dollar and another Payson 10k windbreaker).  Then we went to Marion's for breakfast.  So yummy!

Then Sasha and I went out for a run with Marion biking.  As soon as we get ready to go out it starts pouring.  Our shoes soaked by 1/2 mile.  We go up Payson canyon until the 2 mile mark, then turn around.  Hail at this point.  Nice :(  I VPB then have to catch up, then with .33 to go Sasha tells me we are going to kick it in for 1/2 mile.  Well I thought we were going to go past Marion's house to get the .5, but we don't so I held back too much.  4:44 pace for the .33 (first half of it was steep downhill - per watch it says by best pace was 2:23 - wow!, second half near flat)

Shoe totals: Red sox: 57.25, Brooks Defyance (Blue): 455.77, Asics Stratus 2.1 (Purple) 78.1, Mizuno WaveRider (aqua) 36.61

Hi Michelle! Great race my dear! You are so speedy! I am ever so impressed by your ability! The red shoes are magic! Thanks for bringing the wonderful fruit! The pineapple was divine!!! Your boys were so good. My daughter said- "they were so good and quite!"

From kellies on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 15:09:23

Good job today Michelle. It was nice to visit with you a little more. Thanks also for the specifics on the yummy breakfast, that was really fun and a great way to meet some fellow FRB'ers. Have a great week~

From jona on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 15:25:33

Nice race Michelle. Fun to watch your training, and see the results pan out in the races.

What is the "Course manager" you were talking about? And what is "VPB"? (Virtual Potty Break (how that would work I have no idea), Vomit Pancake Breakfast...)

Good job on the race!

From MichelleL on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 15:28:05

I knew what VPB was from sasha but not what the actual longhand for the acronym. When I asked him he informed me its not a virtual potty break because it is an actual potty break. What it is is a virtual private bathroom. I almost had a vomit pancake breakfast too, but not quite.

From jona on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 15:30:29

Funny, that is awesome, I would have lost breakfast if I had gone with you all. Glad you made it.

From marion on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 15:54:39

Ok- why is everyone throwing up my pancakes? :(

From jona on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 15:55:53

NO, the running more miles would have done it. Your pancakes are WONDERFUL!!!!!

From tarzan on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 15:58:32

Sounds like a fun day. Wish I could have joined you all (but I'm glad I am snug and warm at work).

From marion on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 15:59:00

I'm just kidding Jon :) I need a nap and am getting a little slap happy. I am pretty much cracking myself up over here. BTW- I ate more after ya'll left and I may need a VPB- the vomit pancake breakfast kind :D

From MichelleL on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 15:59:14

Because they're too many calories :) Totally just kidding.

From marion on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 16:00:51

Amen Michelle! TOO many calories for sure!!! Once a year for that stuff! Ok maybe twice a year :D

From jona on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 16:02:20

I think I had 5, that's all the calories I can have today. NOT. I'll just pay for it later when I wonder why I'm not doing as well in some run/race.

From MarcieJ on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 16:10:12

Nice race Michelle, that is huge improvement from last year and I bet you werent anywhere near the miles and speedwork you are doing now. I love how you were going after the guys, you are awesome. Hey also dont forget to PM the chart.

From josse on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 16:17:21

Great job, huge improvement over last year:)

From Kelli on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 16:18:15

You guys crack me up! I didn't even think about upchucking my pancakes to bu your 3rd runner, good thing I had another excuse! Oh, and the rain, we were glad we were in our car for that! I am such a fair weather runner, I need to work on that.

You did great. I love your feedback on the course. It makes me feel better that you noticed some of the same parts as being hilly---now I know why I struggled at times.

Have a great rest of the day.

From TylerS on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 19:07:19

Great job today!! "AGAIN".... j/k I wish that I could have stuck with you for the rest of the race, I am still mad that I didn't pass XXXXXXXL t-shirt kid. Dameron Valley is about how far I could last with you, after that I will have to slow down, you will wear me out if I stay with you much longer than that. Great race, and stay away from that nasty gatorade...

From Kelli on Mon, Sep 01, 2008 at 20:32:44

This guys white shirt gets bigger and bigger...wish I had seen it!

From Dale on Tue, Sep 02, 2008 at 09:41:32

4+ minutes better than last year on tired legs is great! Stay on that improvement curve and ride that a fast STGM. Good race!

From Ultrajim on Thu, Sep 04, 2008 at 10:15:02

Go ahead and talk some smack to the guys. With a time and place like yours, you deserve to. If they get upset for getting checked so much the better. I wish I could run that fast.
