Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

So, Big PR baby!!!!!!

Chick score - Zero.  # ladies participating, about 500.  My biggest race ever.

I would guess that the course is off, and about 12.95 from a nontechnical average of all our Garmins, which would make this time a 1:22:36 (1:22:42 per Ted) for a true 13.1. I am eating humble pie about Sasha science. He was off by a measley one second per mile.

That is just over a six minute PR.

I am so grateful to Ted for pacing me. I think having a great pacer is worth one full minute, and most don't have that benefit, so hat's off to Ted. Thank you so much!

I warmed up 1 mile with Josse and Marcie, then another mile with Marcie. Leg felt good. We didn't have time to stretch much and we did just one stride. We found Ted at the starting line, and Ted, Ruth, Marcie and I were going to start off together for a 6:40 first mile, which Ted sensibly turned into a 6:24 mile, so our pack broke down pretty much right from the start.

1 - 6:24, felt good, Ted asked if it felt like a good "jog" I said yes which I think was the wrong answer because he started to lead me to 6:15ish pace instead of the 6:25ish pace we had planned on.

2 - 6:22, still feeling good, but harder to talk

3 - 6:17, starting to feel some stomach sourness, trying to ignore it, swished water through my mouth at the water stop, I think Ted teases a couple of guys that they have just gotten "Chicked"

4 - 6:22

5 - 6:23, steep but not too long hill in this section, stinky but made up pace after it, Water stop with one shot blok, hard to swallow and I do alot of coughing and takes alot of effort to down it.

6 - 6:07 Ted is getting fiesty in his pacing, had some downhill,

7 - 6:15 Ted starts out this mile just under 6 minute pace for the first quarter and I'm like, "Ted we're going 6:00 pace" and he says, "We are?" Nice try Ted! He was trying to test me but I didn't feel like it was sustainable so we pull back. I imagine Sasha saying to Ted, "Now if she is looking strong, try to sneek down to 6 minute pace and see if she cooperates." Perhaps for Hobble Creek in the summer.

8 - 6:17 - Second water station in this mile, same shot blok issue, then we go into a neighborhood where Ted and I debated which direction to go, he voted right and that was correct, I think we lost a second or two there

9 - 6:29 - nasty long uphill into a neighborhood, and I am not feeling so spry

10 - 6:16, not so sure I can drop the pace after the long uphill but so grateful to see another good split, Ted is starting to bark at me to stay on his shoulder

11 - 6:15, this mile is so hard, Ted is coaxing me, coaxing me through it. I am sure this mile would have been 20 seconds slower or more without him, we go through a section where there are racers behind us going the opposite direction than we are through a water stop and they are crossing our path AND walking and I grumble, so Ted yells multiple times, CLEAR THE WAY, MAKE A PATH, or something like that, it was like him saying "Make way for the Queen." If I can't have a clear path, at least I have an ROTC leader to make sure I have a path :)

12 - 6:28, this is where I start falling apart, I am really feeling it, but there are so many people going the other direction on the race path who are cheering me on (oh, did I mention I am in first place for the ladies all through the race?!?), and I am thinking that some of them are new to the sport, so I am thinking, "Make it look like you are having fun, Michelle, you don't want them to think that it's miserable even for the front runners." So I try to smile and make it look bearable, and I think that it helped me not slow down more than I did. And Ted is HARRASSING me at this point, just like I asked him to, and it would work for 10-15 minute segments, and I think having him pace me was worth about 20 seconds on this mile. I was telling myself, you may be hitting a wall, but do not make it as bad as St. George (where slowed down 1-1:30 per mile for the last three miles). I did get passed by a couple of guys in this mile :(

13 - 6:35 pace (I measured 12.88 but everyone else I talked to measured longer). This mile was soooo hard but I tried not to let go too bad, and was able to turn it on a little bit at the end. I was passed by a couple of guys in the last 1/2 mile, though I am sad to say. Had to fake it for the crowds at the end. Some crying and moaning in the last couple of miles (specifically when Ted told me to pick it up once-then he told me no whining) and at the end, all very typical for me.

So, I faded a little but that is because the pace for the first 3/4 of the race was risky and in foreign territory and just plain at my limit. I am grateful for Ted's encouragement, especially in the last couple of miles. I would have hit him on the head if I had had more energy, so I guess that is a lesson for pacers, don't be too easy on your racers or they'll actually have energy to do the violence on you that they want to.

I looked for lady number 2 and was so happy to see the very talented Ruthie come in, looking like the race was a cake walk. She is scary fast!

Jogged 2 with Ted, Logan, Hal and James. It was nice to pick Logan's brain - thanks for humoring me Logan.

Thank you so much to all bloggers who are a part of my successes. I can't believe I have come so far in 6.5 months (remember Sasha and Sarah, meeting a chubby Michelle Lowry on July 4th who said she wanted to run a 3:20 marathon?).

From Ali on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 09:36:18

Michelle I have seen you work so hard. I only wish I had that drive to push myself that hard. You are one amazing chick. Congrats on an amazing race!

From crumpyb1 on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 10:03:24

Awesome! I loved reading the blow by blow especially when it got tough and you wanted to hurt Ted. Way to pull through the tough parts. It is so cool that he paced you. You smoked your 1:30 goal. Congratulations on a wonderful race.

From Kim on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 10:47:11

Way to go Michelle! You and all of these other speedsters have worked very hard to have the race of your lives today! It was cool to know so many of the fast ones blowing past us in the other direction on the trail. People around me thought I was pretty cool calling all these speed demons by name! It would be nice to run a few miles with you sometime, (my pace not yours!) and have a good chat sometime.

From Lybi on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 11:16:07

MICHELLE! That was FANTASTIC! You ARE the queen. Loved your race report, I was laughing out loud at your descriptions of each mile, and the interactions between you and Ted.

Wow, I can't believe your time! What a PR...it's chocolate time, for sure.

From Steve Hooper on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 11:31:49

Michelle - what a sweet race! I think you ran it perfect. Nice and steady all the way through. Keep up the training you are doing a fantastic job.

From Christi on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 11:36:55

Michelle- CONGRATS!!!! You have worked so hard and earned this victory- enjoy it! I am so THRILLED you took 1st for women!!! Wish I had seen you run the last bit or at the finish- I must've just turned onto the Bloomington Dr. loop when you were passing runners so I missed ya. It was great hanging with you at the party. You're an inspiration- keep it up!!

From Cody on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 12:06:52

Incredible Job Michelle. You should be feeling pretty good about that result! Just think about the guys you chicked. You are now in the "Super Chick" category where it is not AS bad getting chicked by a super chick.

Hats off also to Ted and the pacing. I have been a recipient of the Ted pacing team and he is amazing.

From Brent on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 12:28:17

WOW, 200 hundred commando points, Big PR and winning the race! WOW, you have talent. I like Cody's name, you are the "Super Chick" of the blog.

Michelle, WOW, WOW, WOW!!!! Hey, Awesome job, it was also nice to meet you! I am so impressed with your race, especially how well you ran and your mental toughness to hold on! What a great year ahead for you, it will be exciting following your progress.

From MarcieJ on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 13:08:24

Like I have told you a hundred times already I was so excited to see you win and what a great PR!!!! You have so much mental toughness, more than anyone I know. You are such a gifted runner, I cant wait to see what you do this year and my goal is to someday be able to hang with you in a race. We will for sure be seeing you in the OT in 2012-no doubt about that! It was so fun to meet you and have you and Josse stay at my house-you both are so much fun!

From ryan on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 13:22:41

congrats on the great race.

From Ruthie on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 14:54:37

Oh my goodness, you are so amazing! You ran such a bold race, I didn't even have any sort of a chance against you! And why call me super-talented when that's what we call YOU! You ran such a strong race and I hope...maybe...if we run in another race soon I might be able to stick with you! Way to PR, you're awesome!

From Jamie on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 15:36:12

Way to go Michelle! Good heavens woman, you busted your little buns (and yes, I do mean little). Your hard work certainly paid off. Hats off to you!

From josse on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 17:45:26

I have already told you but you ROCK! Awsome race and it is soooo sweeeet to come in #1. I look forward to the training this summer:)

From Dave Holt on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 18:10:41

Michelle that was great! Great running and great breakthrough. Also very nice to meet you.

From ArmyRunner on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 20:09:54

Michelle congrats on a great race and puting up with me abusing you at the end. My Garmin splits are on my blog as I noticed during the run that yours was always too late in comparison to when mine took the splits so I think your splits are too slow. I had your fastest 5K of the race at 19:16, fastest 10k at 38:43 and 10 miler at 1:02:58. After adding an extra 1:03 to your time I come up with a 1:22:42 equivalent for the 1/2. Good job and make sure you keep training as much as you can during tax season so you can continue to fly this summer.

From James on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 20:28:36

Awesome race! You are in scary shape right now, meaning, scary that you are within 5 minutes of me!:) I knew you would kick trash. Keep up that training and you will have a great year. Watch out guys!

From sarah on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 22:16:21

It was wonderful to meet you in those early days of the blog..before it became this wonderful place for people to meet and improve...You are an inspiration to me and a true athlete..CONGRATS.

Ted told us on the way back about how a guy passed you at the end and he couldn't stay with you anymore and had to break away and make that guy pay...funny...you did wonderfully!!

From amanda on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 22:20:28

It was nice to meet you too and I am glad I started running early in my life. You did a really really good job in the half.

From jtshad on Sun, Jan 20, 2008 at 23:07:11

Congratulations on the win, PR and strong run!

From Shauna on Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 01:11:17

Amazing! So fun to read your report--what a great year you have in front of you. Hope I can watch you race someday!

From Christi on Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 12:01:03

Maybe someone already mentioned this but I just realized you set a NEW Women's record by over a minute (almost 2) for this race!!! Seeing that Painter's has been going for almost 30 yrs (I believe?) that is QUITE an accomplishment- CONGRATS!!!!

From josse on Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 12:21:57

That is an extra plus plus. and you would have even got it if the course was 13.1. You are so awsome!

From Sean on Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 17:26:02

COngrats...sounds like you ran a near-perfect race. Just think how well the summer races will go.

From MichelleL on Mon, Jan 21, 2008 at 19:02:34

Thank you all for your awesome comments! It is wonderful to have you as my support network! This blog is a great family for us all! Happy running!

From Benn on Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 10:59:18

CONGRATULATIONS MICHELLE!!!! I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU! YOU SMASHED THEM! WAY TO DOMINATE THE RACE! RAN THE PERFECT RACE TO A T! AND A NEW COURSE RECORD!?! CELEBRATION PARTY IS IN ORDER! WHENS THE NEXT RACE?

From MichelleL on Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 13:51:39

Thanks Benn! I haven't figured out a game plan for races this year, other than that I want to start racing as soon as I get back in shape. I hope to start with a 10K this year instead of a 5K, and perhaps end of May or early June. When is your next race?

From laura on Tue, Jan 22, 2008 at 19:48:20

That's such an awesome race report, Michelle!! Congratulations on your great victory!!! My sister, Lybi, paced me on a 3 mile race and I knocked off 2 minutes per mile (plus it was a lower altitude and flat course) and I COMPLETELY agree that pacers are worth their weight in gold! Great job!!!!! You're an inspiration!

From Katie on Mon, Feb 04, 2008 at 07:50:12

Very impressive, Michelle!

Why not try a marathon before the end of March?

From MichelleL on Mon, Feb 04, 2008 at 08:00:49

Thanks Katie! It was cool to break into a new level. I was tempted, but my work is in the way. I will be losing fitness between now and the end of March (gradually, hopefully). I want to do it with less pressure and idiosyncratic risk for 2012. I can start qualifying for that in 2010, only 2 years away.

From katie on Mon, Feb 04, 2008 at 12:40:49

Sounds smart, Michelle, except that rumor has it that the qualifying standards may change. They might not have the ot's race but rather, choose top runners from 3 major marathons (ny, chicago, boston, I think) i fear this could be the last. maybe i'm wrong(hopefully i am!) i heard it on letsrun.com a while back.
