Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

On vacation baby.  Note the great sleeptime.  We are in Oregon, so I slept until 6:15 but it felt like 7:15.  We are in Pendleton.  Went on a lovely 65 minute run with perfect temps, into farmland (without mp3 and with pepper spray).  There was a 16% hill for about .3 miles going down on the way out, way too steep to take advantage of, so I had that hill to look forward to on the way back, but it wasn't too long.  We'll do some hiking/walking later.

I survived the motel breakfast and avoided the chocolate muffins, omletes, sausage, bacon, french toast, cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy, and hot chocolate.  That was kind of hard.  But here's the most excellent breakfast I did have:  oatmeal, banana, 2 hard boiled eggs (skipped on 2/3 of the yolks), bran cereal, orange juice.

Good job on the pepper spray, I never leave home without it. But you are breaking my heart skipping the biscuits and gravy on vacation. Have a wonderful week!

Good call on the pepper spray. I was chased by a dog for at least a quarter mile about 3 weeks ago while staying in Pendleton. It was on a rural road northeast of town--maybe the same one? :)

And that hill is a killer! I work in Pendleton every 2-3 weeks and stay at the Hampton (near the Best Western, Holiday Inn, Red Lion, etc) and so I have a love/hate relationship with that hill. Welcome to Oregon!

I think it was actually a rural road to the south of that hill. I turned left after going down the hill, passed the park on my right and the yellow school on the left (crazy architecture and color). It was a neat little town. I thought the square wading pool in downtown had character. Unfortunately, my son got an eyeful in the main bathroom at the Hamley's restaurant. (there's an itty bitty sign on the restroom door that says the room is for mature audiences only due to some old fashioned racy paintings inside, but of course my husband/son didn't read the sign).
