Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

I met MacK at Loafer Elementary.  I was bracing myself for 0-5F, but it was actually 15F which was sooo much more bearable.  There is a huge difference to me.

So I jumped right into a faster pace instead of doing the slow warm up.  It seems when I warm up slow my groin hurts more and when I jump in the the 8's in the first mile I actually feel a lot better.  I think Ted also had a pain that was worse when he ran slower.  It seems counterintuitive.  But it worked today, my leg felt well except for one 3 second pain section in the first mile.  Yesterday my groin hurt or bugged me the whole time, and it hurt after the run until about 3pm.  So I guess I will stop doing the slow warm up if the faster warm up continues to be successful.

It was nice to run with MacK and catch up with her.  She isn't doing speed yet so I didn't ask to do a couple tempo miles.  I threw in two strides in the last mile after she peeled off.  Two strides is a wussy attempt at some speed but I guess its better than nothing.

Resting is defintely harder than running. I was itching to run so badly after my marathon in Dublin.

Yaktrax are rubber/metal overlays that you put over your shoes to get better traction when running on ice and packed snow. It's kinda like chains on tires, but for your feet. Check 'em out...www.yaktrax.com. They are so worth it, especially after slipping a few times on the ice!

Michelle, great questions. I think we are all concerned about the difficulty of winter time training, being ready for spring and not losing too much conditioning, tough time of year. I have been setting the treadmill incline to 1/2 percent. There has been some debate on Cody's blog last month about the incline issue. All treadmills are not created equally for setting the incline. Currently, I am more concerned about leg turnover than exactly trying to match road condidtions. Treadmill workouts are hard enough for me without the concern. What races are you planning for this year? I know, it seems like alot of races. But, the Salt Lake Track Club and Striders series, me and Sylive are really using as hard training runs to help get ready for the summer and fall races. It would be fun for the bloggers to do some of the same races, Tom and the JAMs, Kim. By the way, I got the dates by looking at the Salt Lake Running Company and Wasatch Running web sites. How has your training been going after your Nutcracker 5K? It is so tough in the winter time to not lose conditioning. I look forward to see you kick some more butt in races this year. Stay Cool, B of BS Rools out

Brent-I am not sure about my race schedule but it likely will not start up again until June (after Painters this weekend, of course). I work heavily mid Jan through mid April, so I can't race then and can't even train that well. I am happy with my training this winter, except some pain in my groin has made some of my speed work less frequent and more timid than it otherwise would be. I assume you aren't going to Painter's, Brent?

Slippery fast - I think I will pass on that type of equipment this winter. I am hoping for less ice in February. I haven't fallen because of ice yet this year. Just clumsiness.
