Personal:

I used to run for BYU, but only after trying out three times and finally walking on, so I was never a star. However, it was wonderful to run with great people and under Coach Shane. When you run with fast people, you can't help to improve! I graduated BYU in 1998, and didn't run a race until 2002, after having my second child. My hiatus and other crazy life commitments have made my competitive running suffer, but the last couple of years I have tried to get back into it the best I can. I have been married since 1996, to Paul Lowry, who is a runner himself. I have three boys (my three rascals), ages 12, 10, and 8.

After a great 2008 season, I was injured and eventually diagnosed and cross-diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a type of arthritis disease, which precludes running for all but the most stubborn.  So I am on medications, trying to stay healthy, and seeing my PT often.  And running!  Now beating the streets in Hong Kong.

Ran 1.71 and stretched before meeting up with Josse, and her running buddies Melody and Amanda.  Started really slow, because I didn't do a walking warm up at home, 9:54 pace, then 9:20.  We then ran 1.04 for a warm up (9:27 pace), then started into our workout.

Workout was supposed to be 4x1 mile at 6:51 pace and 1:30 rest.  Well, I think I have improved since my time trial four weeks ago, so I was targeting 6:45ish.

1 - 6:29, downhill (elevation 4922 at start, 4785 at end, 137 drop), felt easy, 1:32 rest

2 - 6:42, flat, 1:32 rest

3 - 6:36, flat, 1:31 rest

4 - 6:39, flat

Melody pulled away on the last two, but I was already going faster than prescribed so I held back.  I felt like I could have done more.  It was a hard workout, but not puke at the end hard.

I would really like to run my 5k next weekend at 6:00 pace, but I am realizing that it is not possible.  My CV intervals of 1/2 mile each are averaging about 3:10, with short rests, so that is 6:20 pace.  I am where I am.  Bummer.

I think you rocked. You didn't add that your watch went longer than mine, so personally I think you should knock of 5-10 sec per mile :) Way to go. I am really impressed with your comeback! I wish I was running Painters with you.

MacK, sure but how early do you have to go.

Melody - thanks! I like how my garmin goes long. I am being disobedient even with a long garmin. Super workout today. We should get together again for a workout.

(Marion - I am counting on 30 sec/mile :D)

Where you are is AWESOME!!! You really will do great at Painters!!! You have so much grit & determination in you! If I had been in your shoes this last year, I'm afraid I'd be sitting on the couch right now eating bonbons, and here you are looking to have a killer 5k! (I think you should wear war paint anyway though, , , , , please ?) :)

Great workout, Michele! I hope you rock your race. You are a great inspiration to us all with what you have endured this past year.
