Short-Term Running Goals:

keep running, stay fit and healthy, while having fun. Would like to get my mileage up to 25 miles a week and plan some short races when I get confident with my speed.

Ran bright and early for me today! Got up and went with my husband around 5:30. I thought it would be colder than it was... Nice surprise! We went 3 miles together and then I went another 2 by myself. Even though sometimes my pace is faster than it was with him I started to fall behind towards the end of the 3 together? I can't figure it out... I have done the same with mt friend Kara. The other day we ran 2.87 together average pace 9:30, felt like it killed me. The next day 5 miles alone average pace 9:30, felt hard but good? Today same story I finished with average pace 9:40 for the 5 today, and when I was with my husband there was no talking going on, just me hanging on! One thing that seems to hold me back is my lungs, I don't feel like I breath effectively... is there something that can help with this? My legs always feel fine it's just the huffing and puffing that seems to slow me? I guess that it is part of the overall fitness aspect to running but for others that I talk to including my husband he says that his legs fatigue first.

Well, really felt good to get out and get it done early today, wish I had the disipline to do that everyday!

Hi Michelle,

Your breathing issue sounds similar to what mine have been in the past. Sometimes you do just fine breathing adn others you really struggle. After a bad breathing experience at a race (Wasatch 100) in 2006, I visited a Pulmanologist (sp) and he disagnosed me with some mild asthma. I did have asthma growing up, but thought it went away. Anyway, he ran various tests, x-rays, etc. and put me on Advair and a nasal decongestant, along with an inhaler to use as needed. Since then I've had zero breathing issues, I'm back to doing tempo runs and speed work. Perhaps you have something similar. Anyway, good luck with your training.

Michelle,

When I was running with Tom the other day I felt winded going about 30 seconds per mile slower than I usually go. It was driving me crazy trying to figure out why I was feeling that way. After a few miles it started doing better. I felt like it was because I was trying to match his stride or rhythm instead of going with my own flow. Once I started into my own groove things felt better. Maybe it was all in my mind, but that's what made sense to me. I can't wait until I can run a 9:30 pace!

I would guess that you're just adjusting to running at a different time of day and trying to sync w/ a partner. I think it will get better w/ time. Jealous you get to run w/ Mik'l this week. Have a great THANKSGIVING!
