Short-Term Running Goals:

After 1/9/2010 - I am taking a year off from marathon length distances and focusing on building up my base speed on half marathons and shorter distances.

2010 Speed Goals:

  • Build up my base speed on training runs to 10 MM miles or better
  • Half Marathon - break 2:05 (9.5 MM avg)
  • 10K Goal 1 - break 1:00 (9.67 MM avg)
  • 10K Goal 2 - break 55 minutes (8.87 MM avg)
  • 5K Goal 1 - break 26.35 minutes
  • 5K Goal 2 - break 25 minutes

Long-Term Running Goals:

Long Term Goals:

  • Complete a 100 Mile race
  • Complete a 100 K race
  • Break 12 hours in a 50 mile race
  • Run all portions of the Wasatch 100 course

Yesterday was a VVLD (Very, Very, Long Day) as I took a train from Aversa, Italy, to Rome, then another train to the Rome Airport.  I flew from Rome to New York City and then on to Utah.  It was almost 1:00 AM before I got home and I hadn't slept much.  I think I was pretty tired because I took a hot bath to relax me because I hurt so bad and woke up when my head went under water.

Went to work and got in 5 hours before coming home at noon and sleeping again.

Tonight I went out to dinner with Leslie, Harold, Paul and Julie.  Leslie and I did some talking about upcoming races and that started me doing some serious thinking.  I was on track last May to be ready for a 50 miler this fall, but lost a lot of training with my hysterectomy and recovery and then didn't get in as much mileage as I wanted to while in Italy.  I 'could' finish the OV 50 miler, but I don't think I am ready for it and I don't think that my body is in a state where I would enjoy the challenge at all.  I rolled out my legs tonight and the IT band from the hip to the knee on both legs is so inflamed I couldn't put full weight on the roller.

Given the state of my current physical and mental status, I have decided to not sign up for the OV 50 miler in the end of October and let St. George be my last big race of the year.  I am a little disappointed because this was going to be my year for a 50 miler, but I would rather put it off a year than get myself injured or lose my enjoyment of training because I push myself to do one when I am not really ready.

Today I've been thinking a lot about "gut feelings". I think you are smart to follow that and really enjoy SGM this year! You've had a lot going and a marathon is a huge thing in itself!

I'm glad you got home safely! I'll bet it was a trip of a lifetime! You seemed to be gone for quite a while...how long was it? I'll bet it feels good to be home. Maybe we'll get a chance to meet in St. George! Good luck with the last few days of anticipation!

Thanks, Kim. I'm not as disappointed as I thought I would be, so I think I have been mentally moving towards this decision for a while.

I was gone 2 1/2 weeks to Italy. I worked a bunch of holidays to make sure I had extra vacation days to use for the trip. There was no way I was going to Italy and rushing through everything!

I'd love to meet you in St. George. Maybe we should try and coordinate a meeting of everyone at the dinner or something. (Or wear signs :)).

On the bright side - I woke up at 4 this morning and rolled my legs out and they are a little less painful.

There is a pre race blog social planned for the night before the race. I think it is going to be from 5:30-7:30 or something like that. Check the discussion forum to find out more info. If you don't see it, post on my blog and I'll find it for you.

Maurine, I think it is for the best, I of course will not do it either. I am not really ready, maybe next year will be better. We will have a great SGM and go from there. How about Painter's in Jan???? It was fun to see you last night, you look GREAT!!!

Welcome Back!!! YeAH! I am sorry about the 50 miler, but hey- there is ALWAYS next year and we must always "live to run another day!!"

Hang in there! You are going to have SO much fun in St George! You and Leslie need to come to Liberty Park on Oct 11th for the Breast Cancer walk (I'm running). It would be so great to meet you. It's only 4 miles. It would be a great break after SGM :D
