OK - Time for pity is behind me.  Time to refocus is ahead of me.

This next week I am taking off of running.  I might do some walking, but I think I need to let my IT Band cool down.  I will be taking anti-inflammatories, icing, rolling it on the styrofoam roller and stretching.  My original plan was to take the week off after finishing 50 miles and it seems logical now.

I really think that the compression shorts were the cause of the injury.  I had worn them in trial runs up to about 10 miles and did feel like they were using my muscles a little differently - but nothing that concerned me. On the bright side - they worked good for my hernia situation.

I have also let myself slide physically since I had surgery in 2008. Prior to that time, I was weight lifting 3-4 times a week and had lost a lot of weight with a trainer. Post surgery, I then moved, went to Italy and the started a new focus on actually becoming a runner.  Time to get back to what worked.  I will go back to the gym and get into a workout schedule with weights. Some adaptation  may need to be done around the hernia - but that is easily enough done.

I am also getting rid of the junk food and going to learn to eat healthy again. I am going to compile my recipes as I try new things to make me a quick and easy cookbook for single runners.

I am also going to get into yoga, pilates, plyometrics and the dreaded intervals.  I need to push myself more on my runs  2-3 times a week with a plan in mind (ie intervals, tempo runs) and not have junk miles unless they are mental destressing days.

The last Saturday in October is the OV (Ogden Valley) 50 miler.  It is all on roads, so easily accessible.  Leslie and I invite all our friends who want to pace us on different sections to put that on your calendars now.

You two are on my calendar! October 24th is the date and I will be there! What fun! so are you going to get that hernia repaired?

the no junk food is a bit of a trail. You can do it!

I am so glad that you are having a better day today. It's at times like this that we make sure our Polly Anna is alive and well! Eeyore is not much of a help to us :( He's cute and all, but not a great emotional booster ;)

Marion, what do you think about the JRP plan for the 11th?

The Hat was sweet. Looks like you put in some serious miles... I think you'll like the results of pilates etc..

Maurine,

I read your report and must say you ran valiantly those up and down 27 miles. It takes guts and smarts to save your knee for the rest of the race season. You continue to inspire me.

I love reading about your focus and new goals. You are amazingly resilient. Looks like you have a good plan of attack and I have no doubt you will succeed. Success is not falling, but in rising after each fall. Thanks for sharing your experience and what you've learned with us. I am penciling Oct 24th on my calendar too. WAY to conquer!!!

It's so anticlimactic to tell the DNF story. After you train so hard, and you know that 'finishing is winning' and all that stuff. I DNF the SGM in October and was devistated. I was in shock almost as I realized I just wasn't going to finish it without breaking/tearing something. That race was my big moment, I was going to qualify for Boston after years and years of running, etc. etc. Three months of Physical Therapy, five months of reduced miles, riding the stationary bike/cross training 3 days a week......But today, I can still run--slower than before, but I can run. It's so hard to make those decisions in the moment (since it's practically obsession that got you there in the first place!). But I hope you'll have peace of mind knowing you chose a life style over a single race, any race.Good luck getting your IT band healed up. You did good, and there will always be other races.

You seem to have already recovered well from your mishap on Saturday. Your positive attitude is great. I will be running the OV50 this year and its going to be lots of fun.

I just read your race report, and I've been there. I got my first DNF about a year and a half ago at the Arkansas Traveler, and I can honestly say it was a good decision and, more importantly, a very educational experience. Keeping in mind that discretion is the better part of valor, pulling out of a race is a difficult decision to make, but the discipline it takes us stubborn, single-minded ultrarunners (or maybe that's just me...) to make such a decision rather than risk significant bodily damage is tremendous. I came out of it a stronger and smarter runner with regard to both training and racing, and you will too. You've already got a great attitude and a plan; that's half the battle. Now all that's left is to chip away at the plan and hammer out the next one.

I know I'll be going back to Arkansas for redemption, and I suspect you'll be heading back Antelope Island at some point to hammer it home!

Oh yeah - Buffalo Run 2010 is already dead center in my target. I know that I can do the OV 50 on roads. I already have several training runs up Millcreek Canyon and Trappers Loop planned.

Jim puts on a great race and when I finish it next year I will have finished all of the distances.

Did you see there is a half marathon in October on Antelope Island? One week after St. George and perfect timing for a last long run before the OV 50.
